Just came back from another fabulous night for Jewellery Quarter Comedy at the Rose Villa Tavern. Tonight was Edinburgh previews from Lou Conran and Jonny Awsum, both fantastic. Its hosted now by the lovely Harriet Dyer who is always really welcoming and really get the crowd in the mood for comedy. Its only a small venue but its always full up, tickets sell fast so make sure you get in and don’t miss out. There was a small issue with the sound system tonight but thats no fault of the comedy night itself. If you’re looking for an alternative intimate comedy night away from the big Glee and Jongleurs nights this is a brilliantly run gig that always delivers the laughs and thats what its all about really.

Even though I’ve lived in the JQ for almost 3 years, I’ve never been upstairs in the Rose Villa Tavern, unbelievable! Also, it’s been way too long since I’ve seen some live comedy and my god, how I’ve missed it! After being invited along by our wonderful CM, Vicky O., I didn’t really know what I was letting myself in for by attending JQ Comedy. I’d heard good stories so I was hoping it would live up to its reputation. It did not disappoint! I came away with my face hurting from all the a laughter with my wallet a little lighter as well due to the one or two(maybe three) glasses of wine I enjoyed throughout the evening. MC Harriet Dyer is possibly the most energetic person I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her energy on stage keeps the crowd going and her introductions were fabulous. I loved the way she engaged the crowd and didn’t let anything get to her. The acts I saw on the 12th May 2015 were John Hastings, Jonny Pelham, Hannah Silvester and Scott Walker — this changes every month so I won’t go into much more detail as you never know who you’re going to see. I enjoyed every single act and it was great to see such a wide range of different styles of comedy including a touch of music as well. Book it now or you’ll miss out! It sells out quickly to make sure you get your tickets well in time of the event and for only £5, it is a night not be missed.

This is honestly the best comedy night in town! Held upstairs at the RVT I have yet to come away from a JQ Comedy night without my face aching from laughter and a huge grin on my face. Tickets are an absolute bargain at £5 and you get a hell of a lot of bang for your buck. The usual format is 4 comedians; an opening act, break, 2 more, break then your headliner. We’ve seen some amazing Edinburgh fringe previews here, fantastic big name comedians and up-and-coming acts. Names like Tom Wrigglesworth, Dan Nightingale and Late Night Gimp Fight have all slayed us on this tiny stage. Harriet, your host for the evening, is an absolute riot keeping you all entertained between the acts in her own unique(completely mental) style. As it’s in the RVT there’s plenty of options for food and refreshment so no over-inflated comedy club prices! Booking in advance is an absolute must, nearly every event is at capacity! If you want a great laugh on a Tuesday night look no further than JQ Comedy!

Really love this event! Upstairs at The Rose Villa Tavern once a month, on a Tuesday, you can experience some really top quality comedy. The doors open at 8pm and it kicks of at 8.30. There are two break during the night which give you time for a toilet break and to get to the bar(good selection down stairs and sometimes that bar upstairs is open too). You definitely get value for money — there are generally 4 acts on and they can be very different. Some of them might not be your style, but I find most of them brilliant and I like the fact you don’t quite know what you are getting! I have never been disappointed — well worth attending!

Now, I can’t really remember how I first came across JQ Comedy — but I’m glad I did. I love comedy nights, but have been to some really awful nights in Birmingham before(where the comedians aren’t advertised and you rock up and wait to see who’s on), so I am so pleased to have found this night and become a regular. JQ Comedy is a monthly event held at the Rose Villa Tavern in the Jewellery Quarter. It features a compere and four comedians over the course of an evening(a usual night starts around 8:30 and runs until about 11pm with a few short breaks to get drinks) and I have never been disappointed with what I’ve seen. Harriet(who comperes and run the evening) is always filled with energy and a joy to behold. Her madcap style of introducing the night and the acts is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The format is introduction — first act(about 20 minutes) — break(10 — 15 minutes), two more comedians — break(5 — 10 minutes) — main act. The breaks give you just enough time to nip to the loo, grab a drink and have a cigarette(so there is no chance of getting bored throughout the evening). We have seen stand up comedians from all around the world, Edinburgh previews, high energy skit based pieces and musical comedy. Tickets are a bargainous £5.50 for a whole evening of entertainment and the upstairs room of the RVT is cosy and the pub itself offers food(so you can grab dinner before the show) and a selection of ales(including at least one Two Towers Ale as the night is sponsored by the local brewery ). Ever since my first visit in 2014, I have tried to catch as many of the shows as I can. Even if you don’t love all of the comedians(there is a wide variety of styles and personalities), you will come away chuckling to yourself. My face is ALWAYS aching from smiling when I leave and I’ve never had a bad evening. If you haven’t been yet, check out the next show, book tickets and go. You won’t look back!
