This is old school in every way and all the better for it. The Jewellery Quarter has been blessed with some classic greasy spoons and currently top of the tree are Hylton Café and CCs. Most people won’t have been to either. Both cater for very regular customers and have that warm, unobtrusive style that makes them such a home from home around breakfast time! So the owner has run the place for around 13 years. He took it over to keep out of his wife’s hair after retiring early. He’s a very nice man and can chat about anything: from the economy right through to Aston Villa! If you don’t want to chat then he’ll leave you alone. Up to you. There’s no menu as such. You can have whatever you fancy so long as it involves café basics, i.e. variations on a theme around bacon, eggs, chips, peas, beans, toast, etc. This isn’t the place to go if you want the usual overpriced JQ hipster scoff! It’s roughin’ it with the original locals and fillin’ yer face without emptying yer pocket! Big Time. I’ve been here countless times. I used to pop in weekly when I worked over the Paradise Circus side of town and walked in from the JQ. Then I opened my own place over the opposite direction and so it was never on my route any more. These days I’ll pop in now and again from my office in the Big Peg. It’s five minutes and a pleasant change. He has a truly lousy choice in newspapers, so that’s a downer: Daily Mail and The Sun. I usually take my own and leave it for someone else. I can sit here and watch the world go by for as long as I like. Customer demand is slow and entirely manageable by the one guy. He’s chilled as a lettuce leaf straight out the crisper drawer! I kinda envy the life-style. He ticks over, but he doesn’t want or need to do any more. We could all learn something about life from dropping by CCs and he makes the best builders tea around!
