Description

Specialties

The Head Injuries Club was founded in 1962 by members of the Birmingham Accident Hospital staff and head injury patients themselves.

We are a local club affiliated to Headway. We provide extra care and a link to the community for head injury victims in the Birmingham area. Working purely on a voluntary basis and with very limited resources we aim to improve the social well being of our members and offer their carers a rest from the strain of looking after an ill relative or loved one, through weekly meeting and annual events.

History

Established in 1962.

Started in 1962 at the Birmingham Accident Hospital, by a number of people including Philip Lockhart (Chief Almoner — Social Worker), Jack Thackeray (Head Remedial Gymnast) and Mr Peter London (Surgeon).

At that time, due to medical advances in early and subsequent treatment, more and more people were starting to survive severe brain injury that in earlier times would have resulted in their death. These survivors were treated at the Accident Hospital. Once they were able to participate in Rehabilitation, they could attend the Centre in Exeter Road, Selly Oak, which had workshop and other facilities and was staffed by Occupational Therapists (including Alice Savage) and other Health Professionals. This has now moved to the Moseley Hall Hospital site and is the Moor Green Outpatient Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit.

Manager

I am based in Birmingham England were I have lived and worked all my life.

My main interest is the Birmingham Head Injury Club, were we organise a night out on Monday for people with head injuries, to give them a change of scenery and their careers a break.
