Open to 8am. By the time I usually get here I’m quite well on. It’s not a surprise I can hardly ever remember leaving… This place is fun. Can get quite busy. It’s the last stop for that one last drink or 2 before home. The staff are nice, door staff are polite too

Jesters can be a fun night out depending on what your after. I remember my first night here, I enjoyed it, there was a buzz, local magazine journalists were taking pictures, and I even got a wink off the bar tender Richard(who I was told later that evening, had won Mr. Gay UK a few years ago, lucky man). They’ve opened a new cocktail bar upstairs, and downstairs you have good booths for seating which is great if your in a group of friends, but you can also just chill out at the bar if your on your own and watch people make drunk fools of themselves on the stage. Their is a moody atmosphere in here, and early in the evening it can be very quiet. Best to go here late evening or early morning and let the party animal out. An average gay bar, straights are welcome too, but not the best and I’d rather go elsewhere.

Jester’s isn’t the sort of place I’d usually drink but somehow it’s ended up on the itinerary of several drunken nights out. For those of you who don’t know, Jesters is a gay bar, which in Birmingham seems to mean booming commercial dance music, alcopops and décor that could only be described as camp. There’s a large dance floor with a podium and a pole, which I may or may not have wrapped myself around in a drunken frenzy one late November evening. There’s also a friendly atmosphere and nice staff. However it does serve extremely late/early and sometimes the clientele at this hour can be a little worse for wear. The bar is neither interestingly stocked nor cheap, but neither is it particularly expensive for this part of town. In conclusion, Jester’s is alright if you like that sort of thing. And even if you’re not into that kind of thing, you might find yourself having fun anyway.

If you walk past Bar Jester in the day, you may be intrigued by the jester figure painted on the closed back shutter. It looks like some mischievous graffiti artist has mde his mark on a building that doesn’t function as anything. But it’s a clue as, while Bar Jester’s shutter remains down during the day, the Jester awakens at night. Alongside Chic, it’s one of the gew gays bar at the fringes of the city’s ‘gay’ quarter and also shares with Chic the honour of being one of the few that opens until the wee wee hours of the morning — so if you’re hardcore and see Sunday as a reason to stay in bed, then this is the one for you. There’s a somewhat ‘cruisy’ feel you get in here that’s a bit more pronounced than other gay bars, which means the gents who visit are perhaps looking for a partner to join them in bed during Sunday afternoon. Although a bit dingy inside, there’s still a perfectly acceptable bar area where you can just sit and chat, but it does feel a bit like a hunting ground and attracts an older clientele than the more mixed Chic. From next week, it will be opening on a Friday and Sat until 8am so it does mean you can carry on the night if you’r over the road at the Academy — but really, I’d say this is one for the grizzled gay bear crowd and doesn’t offer a great deal of widespread appeal.

this bar was friendly prior to the previous owners selling up as remained a welcoming establishment. these days allows all sorts of clients into the bar not giving a personal touch.
