Woodside Ferry Terminal

This is where the Belfast comes in and departs. What more do you need… They have seats, TV and a couple of vending machines. Unless you’re delayed, you’re not going to be in here long (unless you’re there working like I was…).

For spectacular views of Liverpool’s impressive skyline, there is no better vantage point than Birkenhead’s Woodside Ferry Terminal. Close to Hamilton Square, the first station on the Wirral from Liverpool, this is an amazing location that catches the eye of any motorist driving from Birkenhead to the Wallasey Tunnel.
As a born and bred scouser the vista from this site never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. There isn’t much here besides a tranquil café, great for staring out at the perfect panorama, the Liver Birds, the Echo Arena, the Port of Liverpool building or any of the city’s new waterfront additions.
Sitting there today (30 August) among just a couple of people, it was interesting to wonder just how busy Liverpool was during the Beatles inspired day of the Mathew Street festival. Far removed from the peace and quiet of Woodside.
I could quite easily spend a day here with my Canon, but I’d recommend a very wide lens to fit in all Liverpool has to offer.

There are great views of the world famous Liverpool skyline from this side of the river. Woodside is the second stop of the Mersey Ferry after Seacombe. In comparison to the former, there’s very little here; Seacombe’s Spaceport and Sea Life Centre (if it’s still there) attracts many more customers and has a lot more energy. However there is quite a nice atmosphere here; it’s very peaceful and calm. There is a nice café and a bit of history about the place: the ferries and the trams.
There are good bus connections to travel around the wirral and Hamilton Square train station is a few minutes walk away so if you’re feeling a bit seasick go under the river instead!

The Woodside Ferry Terminal is located in Birkenhead, on the Wirral. This is one of the three ports that the Mersey Ferry stops at on its little loop tour on the Mersey River.
This terminal, like Liverpool, has a small café and gift shop. It’s also located right beside the Woodside bus station, and a short walk from Hamilton Square, the Birkenhead Market, and the Grange and Pyramid Shopping Centres.
From this port you also get amazing views of the Liverpool skyline. It’s a great place to take photos.
