Given it’s location(as the name suggests) at the edge of the river Lagan, this could be a fantastic, happening place, however unfortunately on both my visits here, I have been thoroughly under-awed with it all. The first time was on a Friday lunchtime for a meal. It was quite busy and we were luckily able to get a table for the four of us. They had a decent enough menu, and I opted for the fish and chips(what with it being fat Friday, and all!) The food came reasonably quickly, but to be honest it was only just OK. Definitely not tasty, and I couldn’t even come close to finishing it. The second time we went on a Friday night before going on elsewhere, mainly due to the close proximity to central station, as we had just got off the train, and I couldn’t believe it, but the place was absolutely empty. It was just the four of us and one thoroughly bored looking girl behind the bar(and I can’t blame her) We finished our drinks fairly quickly and headed on somewhere a bit more lively.

Beautifully located overlooking the River Lagan, the Edge is a great restaurant, and one of the few to have ample on-site parking. Good portions, not too pricey, and great service. They have a varied menu, from which I had a steak the last time I was there — it was a succulent steak, done to perfection, which was unsurprising since I’ve never been disappointed with a meal there. Just a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Belfast’s nightlife, it’s a very tranquil and pleasant setting(both inside and out), and is the perfect place for couples dining out — especially if you’re fortunate enough to be there on a night when the pianist is playing. Couple that with a window seat and it’s the perfect setting.

The Edge’s location(as the name suggests — on the edge of the River Lagan) couldn’t be better. If you’re lucky enough to get a window seat on a nice day, you can sit for hours enjoying the view. I also have to confess that I have a soft spot for the Edge. I had my first date with my on-again/off-again boyfriend there and my sister held her wedding reception there in 2004, so I don’t feel like I can be very hard on it because I really only have good memories of the place. Now, it wouldn’t be a place I’d go for a weekend drink in necessarily, it’s more of a Sunday dinner with the family place these days. In years gone by it was quite a trendy place, but as the Cathedral Quarter emerged, it started seeming out of the way and a bit dull. I’d definitely recommend it for a meal. The food is always delicious and reasonably priced. I went once for a Christmas party with work and the food was top notch. This is always a good sign since most places forget standards at Christmas and just heat things up in the microwave!

I have an on-off love affair with this restaurant. I’ve enjoyed some lovely meals, with just the two of us, or out with good friends, and have been to private functions in thier upper function room. The food in the main restaurant is always lovely. I remember in particular the most gorgeous sweet potato soup I’ve ever had, and a gorgeous pigeon dish and a duck dish also. The dishes are always well-presented and the portions aren’t bad either. The service has always been good, and that, accompanied with beautiful views across the River Lagan, can come together to make a lovely evening. I giveth… now I taketh away… I’ve been to two seperate private functions in thier upper function room. I hate to say it, but it’s like a different restaurant! The food has always been mediocre to say the least, wizened up sausages and cold col-au-vents, no imagination or care taken and definitely not up to the high standard of the main restuarant below. It would be interesting to know who oversees the food in this section, as it is uncharacteristically bad compared to the other meals I’ve had here. Final conclusion — the main restaurant is fabulous for a meal, but if you are going to a private function upstairs… have a pizza before you go.

Had a very enjoyable meal here with family, so went back again and was still as pleasing. The location is the only down side, if your having a drink with you’re meal, you need to get a taxi onto somewhere else, as the location is quite isolated.

Great bar, ideal for a drink after work. although can be very busy straight after work on a friday night. Rest of week usually ok and less people about later on. Food OK in bar area, reasonably priced and nice. Food in restaurant, only eaten here once and felt it wasnt worth it, stuck to the bar food after that. Nice location on lagan(when river dosent smell!) and car park outside, not huge but normally can get a space.
