Olde Tyme Favourites

Nice range of old time sweeties, however prices are a bit high and some of them don’t quite taste as they did back in the days. Maybe I’m expecting too much, the shop is packed with sweets and sometimes customers.

This little shop reminds me of a store located in Ballymoney town. I remember getting off the bus after school and joining the queues of young things eager to get their hands on throwback sweets from a simpler time.
Olde Tyme really reiterates that once again — every boiled sweet and by-​the-​ounce sweet you can recall. It really is a big nod towards Charlie and the Chocolate factory — the old school layout, range and generally decorum.
A nice little place to relive sweets gone by and also a perfectly acceptable little shop to get a little sugary glucose boost.

Wow. talk about regressing back to my childhood. Upon entering fond memories came back of visiting similar emporiums clutching pocket money in my sticky hands and carefully debating what treats I would be buying.
Back in the present day this particular shop is a delight, not only because I could see over the counter, but by the amount of care and attention to detail that’s gone into it.
The shop itself is tiny but the selection of ‘retro-​sweeties’ is huge. The mix of colour and highly scented confectionary was quite heady and I had to reel myself in before buying way too much stuff.
They had the lot but I opted for my old favourite rhubarb and custards showing remarkable restraint by getting a mere ‘quarter’. The choice of stuff is way too large to even begin to list but there are all sorts of soft, boiled sweets along with chocolate bars and sherbets and the like. A sure-​fire treat for kids, old and young.
Pros: Great choice, fun environment.
Cons: Could get cramped.

I discovered Olde Tyme Favourites a couple of years whilst exploring this unknown area out the back of Castle Court, and was delighted to see such a sweet shop existed in Belfast, since there are so few of them left. A stone’s throw from Smithfields, you have to really squint to see it. Lucky I have good eyesight then…
Today was to be the day that I would be revisit this sweetie emporium. I wasn’t the only one apparently, and with five other people in the shop, it was a bit of a squeeze. The selection is really incredible, and even when it came to me to choose what i wanted, I really struggled. There is, quite literally it would seem, every kind of sweet possible. Frantically scanning the walls, I settled for Midget Gems and Sports Mixture. 100g of each, though the shop assistant thought I said 300, and laughed at himself when he realised, saying, «Ah, it’s the heat!» I definitely appreciated that.
Midget Gems were fab, and I have been notified that the Sports Mixture were «good». Coming from my Dad, that really is a compliment and a half…

I love this place! It has the simplest but most accurately descriptive names of all shops in Belfast, the Old Tyme Sweet Shop. You take two steps in and well that pretty much as far as you can go. This place is tiny, yet every single part of the store has some tasty treat hanging from it. The old corner shop at the end of my street used to sale stuff in the same fashion. Measuring quantities of sweets from giant jars along the walls, which makes me really nostalgic when I enter and I usually end up ordering what 5 year old Conor would get. This was usually the most sugary, hyperactivity inducing sweets possible like Kola Cubes or Sherbet Lemons. You should really call into this store and try literally everything for yourself, it’s fantastic.

This place has been around forever. Remember that scene in Willy Wonka when Charlie goes to the Candymans’ Sweet Shop, with it’s high walls, lined with jars of goodies and its counter covered in delights? This sweet shop feels the same to me. It’s exactly what it says on the tin — it’s an old fashioned, say-​it-​like-​it-​is sweetie shop.
It’s a tiny wee place, but bursting at the seams with sweets and candies of all descriptions. Not one place of this shop is free to set anything down — I can’t imagine how they do a stock take. I also wouldnt’ want to work here, I’d be sampling everything non-​stop!
But if you want a bag of Brandy Balls, a Macaroon Bar, or chocolate covered raisins (my personal favourite) then this place is for you. You can get Puff Candy too, and liquorice… I could go on and on. But call in here yourself if you have a sweet tooth, it’s just out the back of Castle Court, opposite Smithfield Market — you would hardly know it was there.
It doesn’t put on any gloss to see you coming, it’s just a wee sweet shop, but I tell you what, it’s yum!
