Great wee place for a cheap and cheerful night out. Tasty food with byo in a nice setting. Service was very good and close to bars for a cheeky nightcap. I couldn’t actually fault it. Will be back.

I have been to papa joes a few times now and I have never had a bad experience. It is in the middle of Bangor which is great for a group of people who want to go out for food and a couple of drinks as you can walk to any bar in a couple of minutes. The food has been brilliant every time I have went there and the portions are great, I had a 2 course meal and that filled me for the rest of the day. It is also bring your own drink which I like because you save a good bit of money not having to buy drinks in the restaurant. The staff are also very friendly and would do anything to make sure you have the best experience and I would definitely recommend papa joes to anyone who wants to have a nice meal out in Bangor.

Papa Joes… where to start. This restaurant is somewhat of an institution in Bangor. In a nut shell, it is cheap, big portions and bring your own. The menu hasn’t changed in forever, but it is quite extensive so why should it? Let’s face it, this isn’t a gourmet restaurant so please dont be going in with your food critics hat on. It’s American style homely dinners served with a smile, e.g. the biggest lasagne known to mankind. I think most Bangorians have a particular favourite, being steak Santa fe, chicken tenby or my choice — sizzling fajitas. The dessert menu is still to date the best I have encountered over my very indulgent life. If you don’t want one then do not, seriously dont, ask for the menu. That’s you getting a dessert. Game over. It’s actually impossible to hand it back with the polite ‘just the bill actually’. Overall, this place is slightly dated and the food isn’t michellin star. But it definitely holds a place in the heart of Bangor. With bring your own and cheeky 2for1 on a Monday vouchers(that all self respecting fans have) I wont be leaving a long time between my visits :)

Great service. Great food. Great atmosphere, always busy! Yes their menu hasn’t changed much over the years, but why should it… it’s delicious!

The girls and I often go to Papa Joe’s, the main reason being that without a doubt it’s Bangor’s best BYO. The old faithful menu has not changed for quite a while, but that doesn’t matter because we always order the same thing anyway. One night, we bravely decided we all had to try something new and guess what… the other options on the menu are good too! The owner of the restaurant is often there, ensuring excellent service from the staff. They have been undergoing a recent revamp, with new wallpaper and décor bringing what was becoming a tired interior much more up to date. The extremely generous portions mean that we rarely have a starter or dessert, and on average our spend(including corkage and tip) is around £16. I would give the restaurant 5* if they would attend to the bathrooms… often a little unpleasant.

used to love this place but décor and menu so dated has really went down hill they need to overhaul the place and do something drastic like what they did with their sister restaurant aldens when revamping it to neils hill great job!!! we ate hear a month ago and still talk about how poor the food was especially the brie starter on a bed off what tasted like bird seed, worst meal in bangor ever

Every time we go to Papa Joes we always leave talking about how great it is. The food is excellent and very tasty. The byo keeps the cost right down. A fantastic restaurant that I can recommend.

This place has been going for so so long and is a regular for people grabbing dinner on a Saturday night or heaidng out for a work night out. People absolutely love this place but I don’t really see why it is so lauded. Its certainly nice enough, the staff are friendly and the menu is nice and it isn’t too expensive but it justt doesn’t do it for me. I’ve been here lots and lots of times and usually get the nachos or a vegetarian option, and its always pretty good. They take reservations and you can usually get a seat, despite it always being busy. You will have a good time here, with plenty of nice food and its BYOB, its just not my favourite place in the world.

Picture the scene: horrendously busy day in the seaside town of Bangor due to the fact that 40,000 people are gearing up to hear Snow Patrol play + girl and guy frantically searching for somewhere to eat = near darn impossible. Having decided that food was necessary at some stage that afternoon, we dashed over quickly to the already packed restaurant(at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon) and practically begged the waiter to slip us in at some stage. Miraculously, there happened to be a spot waiting right for us at 6:30. Maybe he just liked the look of us… 6:30 came, and we once ascended upon the madness of Papa Joes. Surrounded by alcohol induced diners is really not my cup of tea, but the food was so good that I almost completely forgot about them. Almost. The chicken fajitas were totally scrumptious, though I could not bring myself to eat the huge portion I had been given. My boyfriend tucked into a massive steak, full of compliments for its taste. The staff, despite being under a huge amount of pressure, were really quite resilient and very pleasant to deal with. We both left feeling hugely satisfied in every aspect of such a great restaurant.

Okay, I’m a real major fan of American cuisine, and the menu here is very mouth-watering, lots of dishes involving sticky ribs and burgers and spicy chicken — my kind of food. It’s a bring your own bottle place too, which always puts me in a good mood so I was happy before I even stepped into the place — is it just me or do you really feel like you’re saving money? I don’t know, the illusion works for me anyway! The downsides for me are, that it’s a noisy kind of place(which obviously works for families and big groups) so I wouldn’t go here on a quiet, romantic date. But the food is top notch and the service great.

So you’re in Bangor and want to go for lunch or tea — look no further than Papa Joes, especially if you’ve got the kids with you. This is a favourite spot for Saturday lunch for my bunch and has been for quite a few years. Papa Joes has an American themed menu, although the interior is totally neutral — a little bit of Americana wouldn’t go amiss. The food is creola and cajun inspired, stuff like blackened chicken, bbq ribs, spicy chicken strips etc. Everything is fresh, especially the breads and salads and you can tell the chefs have used acual fresh herbs and spices rather than sauces from a jar. One of the starters is interestingly called ‘Papa Joe’s Cheesy Nibbles’ — a witty friend of mine once wondered how Papa Joe felt about his cheesy nibbles being for sale. Well I thought it was witty. There’s a good selection of kids meals too for about £4 and the deserts are big on chocolate and ice cream. If you are looking for a family venue, its best to go at lunch or early tea time as Papa Joes can be quite rowdy with large groups at night. If you’re looking for a resaonably priced good meal in a BYO joint, then get yourself down here at night!
