I have been to the Axe & Cleaver twice now, both times with family on a Sunday for their Sunday roast(around £8) It is placed well for being a welcome rest from lengthy walks in the beautiful country deer park of Dunham Massey(owned by the National Trust) which is right on the doorstep and its rural setting gives you pretty views of Dunham village. The building itself has been a «beer house» since 1880, and most of the original features still in place like open fires, exposed beams and old solid oak doors. The décor gives off a very homely feel with all the reclaimed furniture. It has a good reputation for offering traditional British country fayre on the regular menu, and although this year new has seen new owners take over they have managed to uphold this reputation well in my opinion. All in all a good old fashioned country pup that can be reached in just a 10 minute drive from Altrincham, the only thing I would say that disappoints is the lack of specialty beers and ales… but I guess the main focus is the food, and when it is done well in a friendly and tranquil atmosphere I guess the basic John Smiths Smooth!
