Place rating: 3 Istanbul, Turkey
Okay, I want to give this place 1 million stars simply for existing, but that would be an injustice to true lovers of bubble tea. How high are your standards, really? This is Istanbul, one of the more xenophobic countries in terms of food and trying new things, so it will take bubble tea a century to catch on, if it ever does. Only then can I hope for competition. Until then, this will do. It’s more or less what you’d expect — the kind that is made from a powder base, with plenty of flavors to choose from. I tried Taro(it tastes like cookies) and Coconut flavor milk tea with tapioca, which is the only way I’ll ever have my bubble tea served. They had what seemed like hundreds of «toppings»(bottomings would be a more appropriate term), including lychee(!!) and exploding yogurt balls(something I’ve only seen at Berrywild or Pinkberry in NYC). They also have a lot of other types — flavored regular tea. milkshakes, a «yogurt» style one(to please the Turkish market, I guess) — and desserts. I didn’t try any desserts but I have had one of their macaroons. It was forgettable. So why three stars? Well, my Taro tea was watery and although I asked for it hot, it came lukewarm. The packaging is not aesthetically pleasing easier, and everything kind of feels a bit cheap and artificial. But other than that, I enjoyed it. One touch I liked was the stamp card — after buying 5 teas, you’ll get one free. You may have to ask for the stamp card though. The guys forgot to give them to my friends. In short, this place is nothing special compared to Taiwanese bakeries in Queens… but for Istanbul, it’s a giant leap for yabancikind.
