Sir John Moore’s tomb was already some sort of pilgrimage site for the British in the 19th century. Born in 1761 in Glasgow, Moore joined the British army and helped subdue the Irish rebellion at the end of the 18th century. But his real claim to fame came with the Spanish War and the struggle to rid Spain of Napoleon’s forces. Commander of the British troops in Iberia, he was fatally wounded in Coruña and is buried there. His gravesite has poems by Charles Wolfe and Rosalía de Castro. From it one can look out on the Atlantic. British travelers since that time, both men and women, cite his valor and make sure they pay their respects. Not an overly ostentatious site, nevertheless, it gives one pause to think of the act of heroism and how it has not been forgotten to this day. Most every coruñés must have visited the monument and read the poems as well as other plaques that have been placed in the shady garden with a view of the sea, in the old part of the city. Do something different: tear yourself away from the bars and shop windows and hike up to see for yourself. Here’s a photo besides the one of my own up above.
