Café Ingles

Zwischen der Kirche Sé und dem Castelo de Silves ist dieses bezaubernde Café.Doe Spezialität sind Kuchen, kleine Snacks, Pizzen und insbesondere frisch gepresster Orangensaft.
Silves hat sich im Gegensatz zu den meisten Küstenorten seinen kleinstättischen Charme und seine Ursprünglichkeit bewahrt.
Ein sehr sehenswerter Ort an der Algarve.

Excellent time. Especially with music on the weekend we enjoyed everything about this place. Very solid fresh pizza, we’d heard about the great fruit pies piesAnd the cake which had a bit of rum looks a bit unique and tastes amazing. The whole patio also might be the best spot in town to eat.

In the sleepy medieval town of Silves, Café Ingles has one of the most lovely and inviting settings you can find: tucked under a tree-​covered courtyard, next to the ancient castle. The location looked almost too pretty, too attractive to tourists, that I wasn’t sure the food would be anything special. But it was!
The menu is best described as «world cuisine». We ordered some red table wine, a super creamy ceasar salad, and a curry & shrimp linguine. Portions were very generous, and the food was predictably heavy (in Portugese fashion), but delicious. We should have saved more room for dessert because they were incredible and HUGE! They have a whole dessert case full of local specialties like almond cake, carob cake, and this decadent rum & chocolate cake with ice cream. I almost died of pleasure/​gluttony while eating this thing.
Service was super friendly and accommodating. We loved sitting under the twinkle lights, sipping wine, and watching the townspeople stroll and mingle. A sweet location with unique menu and Portugese hospitality. Oh yes, and Jonny the café cat. Lots to love!

Very unfriendly waiters

Service and food are hit and miss. Have had some great meals here and some not so great. The service whilst often slow can range from friendly to at the worst I have seen it, hostile. The waiter (if I can call someone so inept and unpleasant waiter) was slow, rude, uninformed and uninformative. Took the order incorrectly and then when bringing out the very staggered order asked Well who is going to have this as if his incompetence was our fault. Followed up by bringing out a meat dish to a vegetarian because he had failed to inform the kitchen he had an order for one of the last portions (a beginner mistake to anyone who works restaurants) then because we didn’t order desserts fast enough flounced off and only served desserts to 4 of the 12 people. No coffees offeredall in all the worst service I think I have ever had in my life. Despite living here I tend to avoid the place because of the hit and miss nature of food and service.

First experience of Café Inglis was great and couldn’t wait to go back. We took some friends the next time and it was EMBARRASING. The food was terrible, the worst meal we had had in a long time. My husbands steak was supposed to be ‘rare’, but was over cooked and tough. Our Friends duck was dry and tough, so disappointing. As for the dessert. we couldn’t believe our eyes when they produced something that looked like a pile of excrement.
Unfortunately we wont be going back. I am so disappointed.

Hier hat sich jemand seinen Traum verwirklicht. Und den will er mit anderen Teilen. Das Café Ingles hat nicht nur eine tolle Terrasse, nettes und freundliches Personal, ein angenehmes Ambiente innen, sondern auch sehr gutes Essen. Man fühlt sich einfach wohl!
Es ragt angenehm aus dem üblichen Café– und Restaurantgemisch heraus und wir hätten das in Silves gar nicht erwartet. Anders als in einigen Reiseführern steht gibt es hier nicht nur Kleinigkeiten zu essen, sondern auch hervorragende Abendgerichte. Den schon erwähnten Kuchen dann als Nachspeise. Ein wunderbarer Abend!

Die große Welt an einem kleinen Ort. Im Winter spendet der gemütliche Kohlenofen nicht nur den Gästen sondern auch der Mietzekatze Wärme und Wohlbehagen. Die Kuchen sind einsame Klasse, sowohl im Geschmack, als auch von der Anzahl der Kalorien. Die Speisenkarte ist abwechlungsreich und das Essen hervorragend. Großstadtklasse in historischem Ambiente. Zum weiterträumen …

we loved it here. we had been wondering around silves for a while trying to find a nice place for lunch. we were not disppointed! the food wasn’t all that good but i have to say i had the best ice cream suindae there i have had for a long time. The service was ok but nothing is done in a hurry so we didn’t expect it to be quick. We would stop here again — it was clean. Children are catered for and there is plenty of space. You could just stop for a coffeee or a beer if you didn’t want to eat anything.

What a disappointment. Looking forward to a meal here as it had been recommended. My friend lives in the Algarve so went along to have a look. Staff were surly, far too busy for their own good, i.e. unable to cope. Waited for meal for 55mins but nothing came, not even an apology and they knew we were there as our order had been taken. Other tables were served before us. We cancelled, paid for our drinks and left. Not a murmer of an apology, just surly and bad tempered. The girl behind the bar and the British person with the long grey pony tail especially so. We love the Algarve and have eaten well, and sometimes not so well, in many places. Some of the best are the cheapest and where the locals go. We will definitely avoid this one in the future and will not recommend it.
Hopefully this will appear on the web page but I very much doubt it.

the best place for food and music I found on the Algarve. A real discovery, brilliant cakes, nice people, good music 2 nights a week and a stunning setting. If you want a change from dried cod and rice and chicken this is the place.
Also Silves is a really nice town. The old Moorish capital of Al Gharve has a fab castle sitting on its top. Don’t Miss!

Der gemeine Algarve-​Tourist verbringt sein Dasein meist am Meer; Strände mit warmem weissen Sand, rote Klippenformationen mit faszinierenden Grotten, liebliche Häfen, frischer Fisch vom Grill — das ist das allgemeine Algarvebild und so tummeln sich die Massen nun mal an den Küstenorten herum und besetzen jeden Flecken mit dem ersehnten Ozeanpanorama.
Um sich da als edler, dem bösen Pöbel weit überlegener Individualtourist erster Güte zu erweisen muß man schon betont von der Küste abschweifen und dabei die historischen Aspekte der Algarve im Blick behalten — und da kommt in jedem gängigen Reiseführer Silves ins Spiel, die alte Hauptstadt der Algarve unter arabischer Herrschaft. Hier wurde im 12. Jahrhundert eine schöné Burg aus rotem Sandstein auf den Hügel gesetzt, die erstaunlicherweise noch heute fast komplett erhalten ist und von der man einen wunderbaren Rundblick über die umliegenden Gärten und Täler bis zum Meer hat.
Und in Silves findet man immer diese wunderbar knorrig-​staubig-​dämmerige portugiesische Siesta-​Ruhe, die in den geschäftigen Küstenörtchen unter dem dräuenden Strom der Besucher längst verlorengegangen ist.
Am besten man fährt nach Silves mit der alten Küsteneisenbahn, in alten Wagen, für wenig Geld (z.B. von Lagos) und mit den oft netten Einheimischen.
Bis zur Burg muß man sich quer durch die engen Gassen einen relativ weiten Weg den Berg hinauf quälen. Belohnt wird man nicht nur mit dem Panorama sondern auch den Leistungen des Café Ingles!
Dieses findet man unterhalb der Burg in einer kleinen alten Villa, die vermutlich in verschiedenen Perioden gebaut und erweitert wurde, in jedem Fall aber Jugenstilelemente aufweist.
Das weitläufige Café besitzt ein entsprechend originalgetreues Mobiliar und serviert eine Menge süße Köstlichkeiten, die oft eine Mischung aus portugiesischen und englischen Rezepten darstellen. Apple Crumbles, Mandelkuschen, Feigen-​Schokolade-​Pastetchen erweitern das Standardprogramm aus Natas und Vanilleröllchen. Guter starker Kaffee ist in Portugal Voraussetzung fürs Überleben und wird daher nicht extra kommentiert.
In erster Linie aber erfreut hier das Ambiente des Cafés, das einen sehr schnell in die Atmosphäre der Literaten und Dichter der Jahrhundertwende zu versetzen scheint. Passend dazu sitzen auf der grünen Terasse unterhalb der wuchtigen rotbraunen Burgmauern auch eher ältere Einheimische. Diese kommen vor allem gern am Sonntag mittags hierher. Dann nämlich gibt es hier anspruchsvolle Live-​Musik, open air unter den Bäumen spielen gepflegte alte Herren jazzig Bossa Nova und anderes, während die Gäste entrückt und entzückt paarweise unter den Hibiskus– und Mandarinenbäumen tanzen… Man möchte hier stundenlang verharren und dem Spiel der Menschen zuschauen, alles ist fast wie in einem alten Film…
