We were seated immediately as it wasn’t full but looked like a very comfy place to eat at. The starters of azeitâo cheese with bread and olives was pretty good! Seconds were grilled sea bass with a side of boiled potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, and salted cod (not fresh Cod) grilled with dried tomato breadbrumbs over a bed of spinach and boiled potatoes. Sea bass was very fresh, cod was pretty alright considering it has never been my favourite fish, but when in Portugal…
Our waiter who spoke good English was rather cold and not very service-​oriented rushing with our order. Nevertheless we were later served by another waiter who was first class in service! It was raining cats and dogs and he offered to call us a cab which picked us up at the entrance. Reasonable price for 3 about 85 €.

For our first night in Porto we have follow the advises of Unilocaler and try this restaurant. The place is nicely situated on the side of the Douro. If you are only 2, you will have a nice table outside with river view.
Food wise, we have tried the Porto wine tasting menu. 3 dishes provided with 3 different Porto wines. A good start for our trip here! The starter was a carpaccio of bacalao — fresh and tasty. The main was a duck — greatly crispy! In general nice start of our trip here in Porto!

Restaurant très agréable avec terrasse passante donnant sur le Douro. Le service est irréprochable. Un seul plat végé à la carte (trio de spaghettis) qui né m’emballait pas sur le papier mais s’ est révélé excellent. Le dessert était très fin lui aussi.

Am Cais da Ribeira, entlang dem Douro, drängeln sich Straßencafés und Restaurants, für Touris gemacht und von diesen reichlich frequentiert. Wer allerdings nach der Praia da Ribiera weiter in westlicher Richtung geht, wird auf der folgenden schmalen Fußgängerpromenade auf das kleine, aber feine Restaurant Vinhas d’Alho stoßen. Klar, der eine oder andere Touri verirrt sich auch hierher (und die Speisekarte gibt’s auch auf Englisch), aber die Einheimischen überwiegen klar. Man sitzt draußen, balkonartig über dem Fluss, mit Blick auf die andere Seite mit ihren vielen Portweinkellereien und die doppelstöckige Ponte de Dom Luís I. oder drinnen, zwischen zyklopischen, roh behauenen Felsquadern. Einrichtung: modern, nicht überkandidelt.
Die Speisekarte: portugiesische Fischgerichte hoch und runter, aber modern hergerichtet. Wir aßen erst einmal leckeres Brot, das wir mit feinem Olivenöl beträufelten. Dann, als Aufmerksamkeit des Küchenchefs, eine winzig kleine Fischleckerei (Fischterrine mit schmackhaftem Obendrauf), dann einen vorzüglichen bacalhau cozido, einen gekochten Kabeljau, klein geschnitten und mit gekochten Kartoffelstücken vermengt. Das andere Gericht: polvos (Tintenfische) — diese waren mit einer Füllung aus Tomaten, Gurken, Knoblauch und Koriander zubereitet.
Als Nachtisch gab’s Nonnenbauch (barriga da freine), einen kleinen, viel Eigelb enthaltenden Kuchen und als Gruß an diese wundervolle Stadt macas assadas com vinho do Porto (in Portwein gebratene Äpfel). Alles, wie gesagt, super-​lecker und preislich total angemessen. Daher: 5 Sterne!

This isn’t the cheapest restaurant in Porto, and in a fairly inexpensive town, that’s not surprising. Nor should one expect a place that costs a little more to offer the best value in this town where a 7EUR francesinha can often really hit the spot. But you wouldn’t go to a place like this for something like that.
Tucked away on a side street, it’s a little hard to find, but I would say it’s worth the effort. The international European fare is well prepared and presented very nicely by pleasant and knowledgeable staff. The wine was quite good too, and the waiter offered a heated Spanish brandy for a digestif (I was here in December) which was delicious. And at the end of the restaurant, the tables by the window have a great view of the Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia.
As a matter of fact, I forgot my credit card here and when my girlfriend and I came by to pick it up the next day, the waiter (the same one who had served us the day before) offered us some espresso on the house. That was a very nice touch and much appreciated.
This isn’t a traditional Portuguese restaurant, so keep that in mind before you go here if you’re looking for more local food, though they will have some Portuguese dishes. The portions aren’t large and your bill will likely be a little heavier than at other Porto restaurants. But if you’re looking for a clean, pretty place with something slightly more sophisticated than what you find at most other places in Porto, this may be an excellent choice for you.

Berlin
Das Vinhas D’alho liegt etwas versteckt am Ende der Promenade, aber sehr Zentral. Es bietet 28 Plätze mit Blick auf das gegenüberliegende Ufer, daher sollte man reservieren oder früh da sein. Das Essen ist auf höchsten Niveau, sowohl von der Optik als auch vom Geschmack her. Das Personal spricht Englisch und ist überaus zuvorkommend. Von den in Porto getesteten Restaurants war dieses mit Abstand das beste. Man bekommt Fleisch– und Fischgerichte, Menüs, Suppen, gute Weine. Dafür muss man mit 20 – 30 Euro + Getränke rechnen.
