TOTALLYCHARMING: This district is calmer, traditional and very charming. There are a lot of old structures and stunning architecture to see while wandering through the narrow and winding streets. The perch to view the river and back onto the city is beautiful. This area has the vistas and backdrop for spectacular pictures. There can be streets that are not touristy at all giving this a unspoiled charm to this area. There are stunning churches with many having services while open to viewing. We were fortunate to see a religious procession in the streets with hundreds of worshipers after a service honoring St. Anthony. This is definitely a stop to stroll for the entire day when in the LIsbon area.

It’s a fado place. They dance with sardines and grill sardines over charcoal. They sing songs about bacalhau and cook that too. It’s fun and friendly and delicious and cheap. Everybody working and cooking and singing and eating has a great time. Miles and miles of smiles.

Authentic fado singers come and do a set or two at this small restaurant on Saturday evenings. The fado singers get to take over what is the very small restaurant area, they throw open the windows onto a cobbled street and this is where the tables are laid for the guests. You will be guaranteed of a memorable evening here. The food is fresh and much was grilled on a little barbecue out on the street. Service was very attentive but not much English is spoken. My stuffed octopus was great and the grilled sardines were as tasty as could be. Bread, cheese and very tasty ‘fishcakes’ were served before our main course arrived. If I lived in Lisbon this is the place I’d be taking visitors to in the Alfama neighbourhood. Great food, excellent music, entertaining staff(one of the waitresses regularly acts the fool) all in a family run establishment Look out for a street sign that says TRAVESSA do CHAFARIS de EL-REI and you’ll have found the highly recommended Porta D’Alfama. I doubt they take bookings on a Saturday evening and it gets full — for very good reason. Other times we walked past it was pretty packed too; and at these prices it’s not surprising that the fado singers aren’t the only reason they pack them in. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an authentic and memorable evening out.

Tolle Terrasse, tolle Aussicht, super Platz!
