Though I’ve had some positive vegan dining experiences in Warsaw, Kepa was unfortunately not a highlight. Don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t terrible either – but my expectations were higher than the experience turned out to be. The location is on a quiet little side-street that can be reached from one of the main streets by walking down a staircase. And though it’s a small and unassuming storefront, it’s relatively easy to find. When we arrived, there was one other person who was leaving, so we essentially had the café to ourselves for the 90 minutes or so that we were there. There is no menu in English, but we read the Polish one, deciphering the words that were similar to English and German. There was a slight misunderstanding with the person working, who told me that everything is vegan(it’s actually vegetarian, with some items being vegan). There was also a bit of confusion when she talked about the various spreads/pastes. Apparently the word for«paste» in Polish sounds like«pasta» in English! We ended up ordering a sandwich and something that is sort of like a sandwich made in a grilled cheese maker. Unfortunately many of the ingredients in these things were out, which either means the café is very popular or very unprepared. Perhaps both. Anyway, our orders were then improvised by the employee, and she brought them out some 10 minutes later. The sandwich was big, and pretty tasty. The other thing(a tosty I think it was called) was mostly lacking in flavor and honestly a bit disappointing. Later we got cookies(made with semolina and cocoa powder). These were dry and flavorless. All in all, I like the concept, and the music playing and free WiFi were a plus. There is also a vegan brunch, which sounds cool, though not interesting enough for me to want to try. In short: If you’re in the neighborhood, check it out. If you’re not, don’t go too far out of your way.
