Let’s be clear — this place is for takeaways only. The reason being that it is a hole in a wall, literally. A lurid green roller door lifts to reveal a counter and a tiny kitchen, and that’s it. I suspect it’s the front of someone’s house that’s been converted. It’s in a pretty awful location — shoved between mechanics and panel beaters, with a carpark in front of it that’s great if there’s no-one in it and incredibly stressful on an average night when it’s filled with cars and wandering people. The Stoddard Road can get really busy when there’s services at the mosque opposite Tandoori Hut, and there often seems to be a prayer gathering sometime between 6 and 7.30pm, so bear that in mind re traffic/people crossing road. I’m partly explaining all this to warn you to be prepared, but also slightly in the hope that it means you’ll give up and leave Tandoori Hut to the rest of us, because it’s busy enough as it is. There seems to be a regular crowd, and often you end up having to wait a little longer than the estimate they give you re times, but I figure at least that way you know they’re cooking it from scratch. The food is really, really good. We first discovered it because it was in the Top 10 Metro Cheap Eats(not bad for a roller-door operation). It’s fresh, tasty and cheap — mains are between $ 10 and $ 12, including those with seafood(I know right?!). i know I shouldn’t just order butter chicken because there are many more interesting things on the menu, but seriously — this stuff is really good. Less creamy, more tomatoey and more spicy than the standard kiwi-ised version. Best find in ages. NB, closed on Wednesdays, which is the The Worst Thing when you suddenly decide you can’t be bothered cooking on a rainy midweek night. Remember this fact to avoid disappointment.
