Happened on this place on the way to the Bontanic Gardens. What it lacks in atmosphere, it more than makes up for in delicious food and friendly service. It seems to be run by a family, who all work at the restaurant. They have all kinds of Indian sweets, which seemed to be quite popular. The main traffic while we were there was people coming in to buy boxes full of sweets. I’m not really a fan of Indian sweets in general, so I skipped them… My dad has a fool proof test for Indian restaurants. The samosa test. If the samosa is no good, you might as well leave. The samosas here are delicious. No soggy old flavorless samosas here. They fry it on the spot, and use good hot oil, so its not greasy, and its crispy and good. Just bready enough without being too bready, full of potatoes, good spicing. The other entrees were very yummy. Delicious dal makhani and vegetable korma. Huge plates of rice came with the entrees — no skimping there. Fresh naan and paratha too. Get the masala chai — it is just as it should be. Very hot, spicy, not overly sweet. The eat-in environment is not so nice, but I think it’s worth it to eat there just to get everything fresh from the kitchen. My mouth is watering just thinking about it… hope to get back there soon!

* I’m excluding the décor from this review given that it is purely functional and follows basic NZ «standards» in this regard(i.e., it is dingy) * But the food is spectacular * The samosa is cooked on the spot, so no sitting around in a hot glass box type thing-y * The samosa is packed full of vegetables and a tasty spice mix * We also had the Vegetable Korma, Dal Makhani, Plain Naan, Plain Paratha, and Masala Tea: They were all excellent, especially the tea… * We randomly stumbled upon this place while visiting the Botanic Gardens * It all seems very«authentic» * The restaurant that is, not the gardens, although I suppose they are«authentic» in their own way… except for the whole not-at-all-natural aspect… that would make them rather inauthentic come to think of it… * The restaurant has a sign that would make you think it is called«Butter Chicken,» but I don’t think it is * They are part of some«anti-truancy» program in the area, so kids«wagging» school can’t eat there during school hours…
