YMCA Mt Albert

I was a member at this gym for 1 and a half years from dec 2013 — mid 2015.
When i first joined the gym, it was great. The gym has all the basic free weights equipment and machines. Never tried their classes though. The staffs and managers are friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately the good experience did not last long there. It appears that there are a few degenerate ‘adult’ members suffering from some kind of mental disorder/​depression illness becoming overly abusive to other members during their bizzare episodes. The atmosphere there had become unbearable for some including myself to continue to train at this gym. Feedback had been passed onto management and I hope things have improved there since then. I have since changed gyms.
Overall I give it an overall experience rating of 2.5 or ³⁄₅. The main detractors were due to the continuous harrashment from some particular members there.
The membership fees are quite cheap and affordable but unfortunately it is not worth the hassle of being harassed there.
So if you can afford a few dollars extra per week, then it may be best to seek a gym with better and friendlier atmosphere. Snap fitness would be a better alternative considering it also has free weights, cheaper and it opens ²⁴⁄₇. At the end of the day we go to the gym to improve ourselves and wellbeing not to pick a fight.
Just a warning, if you do join this gym, try not to over use the water fountain. There is a particular bizzare big gentleman there who may become ridiculously upset and may turn abruptly violent on you if he sees you being greedy with the water there.

Before my team got sponsored by another gym, this place was my local, and a very good local at that. The cardio area of the gym is positively massive and there are heaps of machines, which means no long waits while someone ignores the «please keep your time to 20 minutes or less» signs. The weights area is also well stocked, and given that it backs onto the cardio area, more women appear to use it. I think when a gym has a dedicated weights room, women can be quite put off by all the men lifting big amounts, but Mt Albert YMCA doesn’t appear to have this issue. I also like going to the classes at Mt Albert YMCA — the yoga class is a good introduction to the discipline, and the pump class coach is really good and really motivating. They do Zumba and all that sort of crap here too, if you’re into dancing about.

I went here for a spin class and while the room was on the small side, and the bikes weren’t the flashest I’d been on — it really doesn’t matter does it, when you’re on a bike for 50 minutes sweating it out. I enjoyed my workout; the instructor was encouraging and I liked the music.
The YMCA also has a big gym area with all their fitness equipment. It has everything you need and I definitely think it is a good neighbourhood, local gym. I agree with the other reviewers — I think most people would feel comfortable coming here as it is not super showy so you don’t feel out of place as everyone looks like a fitness model!

I went to the gym at the YMCA in Mt Albert while I was in high-​school and it was perfect. As a student at Mt Albert Grammar the YMCA actually offered me a discount, so not only did I have access to all the equipment and classes, but at a cheap price!
It is things like this — providing local students with cheaper rates — that always impresses me about the YMCA. It is a business that really looks after locals — it’s very community oriented.
An example of this community spirit is the YMCA used to rent out one of their rooms to my dance school at a cheap rate so we had enough room to have proper rehearsals and practices. Without their help we would have been at a loss!
Offering great school holiday programmes, hosting kids birthday parties, before and after school care, special youth programmes that promote leadership and creativity — the Mt Albert YMCA is fantastic.

I’ve been coming to the yoga classes here for over 10 years. There used to be Thursday and Tuesday night sessions but now there’s a class on Monday morning at 10.45 and Tuesday evening at 7.35. Both are taught by Diana Radcliffe and have been for as long as I can remember.
The style of yoga is simple Hatha yoga in the Satyananda style and what this means to you is that it’s suitable for all levels. Diana provides alternatives for beginners and takes an individual approach when needed, keeping an eye on the newbies.
Each class starts with a gentle warm-​up followed by floor postures before moving into standing poses, usually incorporating a series of movements into a flow. There are variations each week so you don’t get bored and every session finishes with 10 minutes of breathing and relaxation.
Yoga doesn’t have to be a weird thing you have to go to a hippy place to do; it’s for everyone and I would highly recommend starting here with Diana.

I hate running, I get bored of weights and I can hardly keep afloat in the pool. What I do love though is group fitness. It’s my thing; I love the music and the group encouragement… everyone can see you in the mirror so don’t give up now! Group fitness at YMCA Mt Albert is brilliant. They have a great timetable with loads of classes. Because they’re not a Les Mills gym they have more freedom so you find there’s more variety. The instructors are really good, encouraging yet not militant and they play the music LOUD which I love. The group fitness area at Mt Albert is big and they have plenty of equipment, so although they get busy I’ve never missed out. Because it’s a leisure centre there is more of a community feel and a real mix of people come to the classes; it’s not just for mirror gazing gym junkies. It’s loads of fun and I would fully recommend to anyone that’s looking to get into shape to give Mt Albert a try.
