The Cut Above Academy

I probably wouldn’t get these students to do anything permanent to my hair, e.g.cut it or colour it. But that’s just me, I’m sure they do a fine job.
What they can do though, and much more reasonably than most salons, is blow waves, hair-​ups, make-​up etc for special occassions, and much cheaper than at a normal salon. I’m not saying go there on your wedding day, but for a uni ball or something it’s a good option. Just best to leave a couple of hours longer than your planned appointment time in case they stuff up and have to start all over again. They are students after all.

If you’re trying to find Cut Above, just follow the raggedy bunch of teens, all wearing their black Cut Above t-​shirts, smoking, and sporting an array of ‘creative’ hairdos. If they’re not wandering up Queen Street, they’re hanging out in a massive group right outside Cut Above, smoking and looking surly.
Okay, okay, I’m sure there are some really mature, put-​together students at Cut Above. I’ve just never witnessed them. I went in once for a cut and never again. I felt like the only thing holding them back from shaving half my head and dying the rest purple and green were the tutors. Plus I don’t like going somewhere where a person wielding scissors is looking at me as if to say ‘How can you be like, so totes old and still be, like, omg, alive and everything?’.

I used to come here, but after my hair length was cut quite short (4 inches off) when I said I wanted the length left, I vowed never to return. Up until this point I had a good run of several years at Cut Above Academy cutting my long hair for a mere $ 25 which elsewhere would be upwards of $ 70. The service was usually pretty good and there are always instructors checking the students along the way, plus it isn’t their first time, they have been practicing on mannequins which is reassuring and most of them are close to graduating.
You get the best scalp massages because when the students are being trained this is a really important part of the course so you get the best shampoo and condition ever. The other services they offer are greatly reduced and if you don’t mind a slightly longer appointment then the money saved is worth the extra time spent in the chair. For all the times I went I saw people of all different ages in here, even women over 60 and they do mens hair too. Good facilities and very friendly staff, they are quick to respond to your emails too.

Get Half price highlights and cheap hair cuts and styles on Lorne Street with the A cut Above Academy. I get a half head of highlights, cut and toner for $ 85 here! The reason why it is half the price of most reputable salons is that the stylists are Hairdressing students. There is a tutor overlooking their work so you can’t go far wrong. On the downside, an appointment does take longer than normal, however if time is not an issue then why not give it a try. Perfect for those individuals who have time to spare and are on a budget.
