I fux with this place. Worth every one of those 5 stars.

I have heard quite a lot of buzz lately regarding this little sandwich shop so I really wanted to go and check it out, luckily I managed to yesterday and I was mostly pleased with it. They have a make your own sandwich section where you pay different prices for different filling options e.g. 5 fillings costs $ 9 and they also have a section of already made sandwiches, wrap, quiches etc. I chose an already made one which was falafel with a tahini sauce, it was really tasty but I kind of wished I had been brave and made my own sandwich. My Mum chose one of their vegetarian quiches which she said was really tasty. When you eat in however they bring your food out on paper plates with a plastic knife and fork which I really hated. The plate was so small that my wrap didn’t even fit on it properly and I could see my Mum struggling to cut her quiche with those silly little knifes and forks and at the end you have to throw it all away which I find extremely wasteful. They are friendly here and their coffee looked amazing, I didn’t get one though as I am trying to cut down :) Their sweet treats looked pretty amazing but it also looked like you needed to be quick as things were selling out fast.

I’m kind of obsessed with Slice. It’s basically a lunchbar. It’s basically a fancy version of subway. They do salads and sandwiches made to order, juices and a few sweet things.
I go there to get a sandwich, and pretty much the same one every time because it’s just so damn good. I get either sourdough or 5-​grain bread, depending on healthy I’m feeling. I get my sandwich filled with aioli, whatever lettuce they’ve got that day, cucumber and free-​range chicken. And salt and pepper. I don’t know why I love it so much, I mean — I could make it at home, but it just tastes way better there.
I also often grab a freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice. My favourite. Basically it’s a healthy, fresh meal that I feel good about eating. Makes me happy just thinking about it.

Yes. This is good. This is so fucking good. When did sandwiches stop being the most prominent and important food on the planet? Why? Sandwiches are better than pretty much everything else in the world. And so it goes that (pretty much) the best sandwich joint in town is going to be one of the best places to grab some lunch in town (and is also going to get a five star review). They have a very wide array of fillings and as far as I can tell, they’re all super fresh and mostly organic and/​or fancy.
They also sell nice juice. Juice is a great complimentary beverage for a sandwich. Little kids have juice and sandwiches every single day. It’s bizarre to me that that doesn’t just carry on into adulthood.

Sliced is a good stopping point along Richmond Road, with plenty of parking and always a seat. I often drive past Ripe etc and think, damn I should have stopped to pick up some lunch, so when Sliced appears on the horizon with a park right outside, it’s like it was placed there just for my convenience.
Their menu and counter selection changes up daily, and you can choose your own fillings for a freshly-​made sandwich or wrap.
I stopped in to pick up a coffee and a muffin the other day on my way out to the airport and both were great.

While Auckland has a lot of lunchbars, it’s so hard to find a good one. As someone of semi-​vegetarian persuasion, it can be particularly difficult to unearth something fresh, healthy, fast and delicious to eat at lunchtime. So when just such a midday occasion arose and I was on the road around Ponsonby, my helpful companion directed me to Sliced.
We were intending on eating at one of the Ponsonby’s strips many cafes but parking was a shocker and time was tight. Sliced is located on Richmond Road inbetween a couple of upmarket shops and what we think was an architects office. On the blackboard are listed some recommended combinations for sandwiches and wraps but the real joy is in building your own. Two fillings are $ 6.50, all the way up to five fillings for $ 9.50 with all condiments including seeds and gherkins being free.
I chose a wrap with salad fillings of egg, cheese, beetroot etc which was then served takeaway style, cut in two on a paper plate. I also ordered an iced coffee which was not on the menu, but also not a problem. My coffee was so good that my dining partner ordered one too (once he’d finished his juice).
Everything was fresh and delicious, and considering what you get, pretty well priced. The two staff members were welcoming and helpful and at one point even came out to move along a stinky truck parked in the bus stop by our outdoor table. While we were there a number of regulars dropped in and I can imagine the more the word spreads about Sliced, the busier it will become. It’s so good I would go out of my way to drive there.
Probably the only complaint would be that the seating area is a bit sparse — just a couple of tables but for busy people on the go it’s more than adequate and the fantastic food and service make it so worth visiting — just grab a scenic spot in one of the reserves up the road if the tables are full.
