Excellent place to get a quick simple dish of fine Japanese food. Regularly eat here and it’s always excellent. Simple dishes get out to your table quick. Excellent for a quick bite to eat before heading out.

There’s an ad running for New Zealand tourism entitled«Auckland, The Show Never Stops.» That is a complete and absolutely false advertising luring tourism to a «major» New Zealand city that is well in bed by 9PM. Auckland does NOT have the big city restaurant excitement like that of Sydney, Paris, New York City or São Paulo where such businesses are opened late. And Renkon is an example of such an Auckland restaurant that closes shamelessly early. I mean, why even bother opening in the first place if hungry customers with serious cash will be denied service because«We’re closing in ten minutes»?! And it’s only 8:50PM! In addition to the weak open hours, Renkon does not offer very good food nor exemplary service. Much like most of New Zealand eateries, portions of their meaty dishes are small and the taste is quite insipid. I don’t understand the other favorable reviews that make Renkon seem like a «guilty pleasure» or «filling meal.» Perhaps those are very petite stomachs, but sadly enough, I walked away unsatisified and displeased with my meal. Renkon is yet another place I won’t be revisiting anytime soon for a «Japanese meal.»

Whenever I’m in need of a quick, filling meal, Renkon is a place I love to consider! Traditional Asian noodle/rice dishes with a westernised feel aaaannnd so many different dishes on offer, there is something here to satisfy everyone’s taste buds. The last time I came here I was meeting a girlfriend for a quick bite to eat on her lunch break. I had the chicken katsu on rice with egg. Man oh man was it good. Everything about it was just so satisfying! Although it did look like a white bait fritter when it was placed in front of me, it certainly didn’t taste anything like that… Thank god! Parking was easy enough which I was very surprised about, especially being on the outskirts of town. I parked on Beresford Square with no issues at all. I would recommend coming to Renkon over the likes of noodle canteen any day!

My guilty pleasure would definitely be Renkon. There’s nothing like tucking in there on a cold winter’s day with your hot bowl of deliciousness. I used to work right down the road from this branch so would frequent it every week. I would have to say that I have never been disappointed with my meals here. Sure, the staff can be a bit blunt and not super friendly but once you get over that it’s great. I would call ahead if I had to work through my lunchbreak. This meant that I could pop up there and be back in around 7 minutes. My meal would be waiting for me and I didn’t have to starve through the afternoon. My favourite this to do was to get the Karaage Chicken as a side dish and have ti with the edamame beans. I know it probably doesn’t but I feel like it balances itself out with healthy and unhealthy.

The balance between quality and price is spot on here. The food isn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it’s better than you’d expect for what you pay. And the prices aren’t the cheapest I’ve paid, but they’re lower than I’d expect for the quality(and the size) of the meals. The place itself isn’t huge but there’s space out the back with tables and an interesting view of the reverse of some of the surrounding buildings. I’m a fan of this — there’s no need to get too prissy with your furnishings. Personally I’m a big fan of the curry on rice(Japanese curry seems to polarise people a bit; maybe people read the name and expect something more like an Indian curry so they’re disappointed), but the chicken karaage is good too, especially if you’re after something a bit less sweet.

Renkon is one of my favourite places to go in the K’Road area for lunch — it’s relatively cheap, always delicious and served by ridiculously friendly staff. I always get the teriyaki tofu and make sure they load in lots of extra teriyaki sauce to coat the rice. It’s only $ 11.50 for a standard rice donburi, which is pretty cheap and definitely worth the money you pay for it. Friend favourites are the misodare donburi(with spicy miso sauce) and chicken karaage. I definitely recommend choosing rice over noodles when buying — while delicious and sizeable, noodles don’t soak up the sauce as well as rice.
