I’ve often wondered if dive bars were named thus because of some spectacular dive in quality and service or because divers sometimes suffer from narcosis, which has very similar effects to those of a drunk (if you’re not a diver, Google it). Main Street in Henderson is the dive-​ist dive bar with plenty of drunks and no quality or service.
Main Street is a fetid bar with lousy service and repugnant customers. There are pool tables and sports on TV, cheap, weak piss on sale and the smell of strong, old piss on the walls. It is the cliché of a West (or South) Auckland pub, whose busiest day will undoubtedly be the day after the government benefit is paid out. Squalid is the only polite word I can think of to describe it. Or hovel. Take your pick.
