For the price, Kubick is a fair deal. The location, pricing, and speed is great for students(especially those mini katsudon specials!), but the food isn’t the greatest and the menu is an odd sort of Korean-Japanese fusion and not authentic Japanese. The interior is quaint and comfy if you’re looking to get away for a quick meal in between classes or during your lunch break. If you’re a local on the hunt for a cheap meal, go for it. But if you’re visiting I’d give it a pass.

What most people don’t realise is that there are two Kubick restaurants, one right on Queen St, and the other is located on the Uni bus stops on Symonds St. And this review is for the one on Symonds St. I m not sure why this place only has a 3 star average. To me, thats a bit harsh. And I will give you 3 reasons why I think they deserve more star. 1. The food isn’t over priced, you might think 18 dollars is a lot for a bento set. But Kubicks portion size is fairly big. 2. Their flavours are quite authentic, authentic Korean that is. Most people think they do Japanese food, but they do not. Its Korean, and they do Korean versions of Japanese food. 3. And lastly, they have those very cheap Sushi’s. And the little take away donburi is great value for money. Now, some people might complain about their Sushi. But I have no issues with them myself. The trick is that you stay away from any fish sushi unless they are made a la carte. Their spicy teriyaki chicken sushi has a nice kick at the end. So, not a bad place to eat if you are in a hurry. Food is nice, service is as friendly as what you’d expect from a fast food place. Trust me, you can do a lot worse then Kubick if you don’t know your asian food. Truth be told, I eat there once every two weeks or so. :-) So yea.

Kubick certainly doesn’t sell the best food… the sushi is a bit tragic but at least the prices are low? If you’re wanting some quality sushi I’d suggest hopping over the road and going down Mount Street to Bien but they do charge more. The sushi at Kubick kind of gets stuck in your throat as you eat it, like the rice it too hard(not cooked enough or it’s been made a day of so in advanced and has dried out?) also, I’m not too impressed by the freshness of the fillings. I’d suggest coming to Kubick for one of their super cheap packed lunches/$ 5 donburi(normally like deep fried chicken with some vegetables, a sauce and rice), not incredible but it’s relatively tasty and fills you up. It’s aimed at a student market so you can’t get too uppity about quality here.

This place is alright. I should tell you that it’s crap, and then you’d go there with low expectations and be pleasantly surprised. Accurately though, it’s alright. Not awful, nothing flash. It’s like the Subway of Japanese food. Personally I wouldn’t recommend the sushi — it’s not awful, but to call it alright is probably stretching it a bit. Even with those low expectations I instilled in you, you still might be disappointed. But their meals are pretty decent for a low-price dinner option, and it’s not like you’d ever confuse this place for a trendy place to hang out. Go in, get your rice and meat and sauce, go wherever it is you’re actually going. Maybe this place is less like a Subway, more like a petrol station. That’s not fair, its food’s a bit better than a petrol station’s.

Kubick is an old reliable in this part of town; it’s never going to be the place to take a first date(unless it’s a particularly low key first date) but perfectly fine if you need some dinner and you’re nearby; almost everything is less than $ 20 and all OK. The lunchtime sushi is fine, although it doesn’t distinguish itself from any of the other places nearby. It used to be open until midnight on Friday and Saturdays, making it one of the few decent late night options in this part of town, but I tried to go there at 11pm a few weekends ago and they were just closing, so perhaps that’s no longer the case.

This place is not too bad, if you’re looking for a cheap lunch/dinner option. The food is not quite authentic Japanese, but more like Chinese/Japanese. And Sometimes the food is a bit hit and miss. Those mini dons that they have are usually pretty tasty and mega cheap, but I think sometimes the food stays in that display case at the entrance for most of the day, so it’s probably not the best idea to snatch up the last one. The service here is average, and the interior is nothing fancy, but certainly this a good place for a quick meal before heading to a show or movie. I don’t think they have a liquor licence, so no booze here unfortunately.
