Really great classic Kiwi fish and chips. The chips look hand cut and aren’t too oily. The fish was delicious — we tried it crumbed. Generous helpings and lots of lemon. Perfect!

What a great recommendation we found on Unilocal less than ½ mile away from our motel in Ponsonby. Several choices of local fish that were deep fried to perfection. The chips were also excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. One note: This restaurant does not serve alcohol so you need to grab your beer from somewhere else.

My first fish and chips in NZ. Generous portions, friendly people, super fresh and delicious. Chips were perfectly crisp and soft inside, fish was not overly greasy — clearly had the right temperature of oil to prevent a soggy oil-logged situation. Bonus, there’s a cute little beach way down the street that will be perfect for chowing down on in the summer. One question — whats up with charging for ketchup(tomato sauce) at these places? Am I just a silly American who likes to drown her chips in sauce? Is that not done here? It would be criminal not to provide free, unlimited sauce in the U. S…

Had to update my review on my local fish ‘n chip shop. The«Bulgogi Burger» used to be my favorite stand out item on the menu, but it seems like they’ve changed their recipe. I thought it might’ve been a fluke but the last two times I went back, the burger was a disappointment. It no longer had that bursting flavor I remember. I bet they have stopped marinating the patties and resorted to putting a layer of bulgogi sauce over the meat instead. Guess I’ll have to experiment and cook up my own bulgogi burger magic. All I can say now is – Thank you John Dory Takeaaways, my taste buds won’t forget all the good times we had’.

Fish and Chips, a staple of British culture, is as popular around the world as it is in the fast declining British seaside resort. Most pubs and ‘themed’ restaurants seem to offer soggy battered fish and average deep fried potato yet I regularly see people tucking in withouth knowing what they are missing. John Dory’s is one of my favourite places in Auckland to buy fish and chips, and it’s close enough to home to get it there before their crispy batter and well cooked chips start to wilt. I hear the burgers are also worth trying, for their size alone if nothing else, but why would you come to a fish shop for that?

This is a fish and chip shop. They sell chips and fish and donuts and burgers and fritters and all the normal fish and chip shop stuff. It’s located in Herne Bay, but isn’t really as pricey and you’d imagine it would be. Their chips are okay. There aren’t many places in Auckland that do really great chips. These guys do a pretty good job, but I’ve had better. They’re consistent at least. What John Dory’s(if that is his real name) can really hang their hat on are their burgers. Man their burgers are massive. I’ve never eaten one, but my girlfriend got one last time we went here and it was bloody humungous. Bonus star for sheer mass of burger.

Our ‘local’ fish & chippy and no, it’s not as expensive as everyone thinks. The fish is always fresh and generously portioned; the chips hot and the potato fritters crispy on the outside yet hot and steamy in the middle. Opt for a fish burger and you’ll be pushed to finish it, they make BurgerFuel burgers seem small. When stopping in for a fish & chip dinner, it’s nice to know it can somehow feel healthier than most greasy spoon takeaways. Give them a go, you’ll no doubt be back for more.
