Been here a few times, and is usually really good for cheap pizza and drinks, Tuesday was another story however. No one came to take our order so after 20 minutes of waiting I went to the bar to order and the guy with a beard was rude when I mentioned we’d be moving inside to the empty table behind me. It took an entire 40 minutes to get out 2 pizzas and 2 entrees which arrived out of order(chips, pizzas, rice ball things). In their defence it was their pub quiz night so there was a loud crowd however the long wait time for food was never mentioned. Food wise– entrees were nice, my pizza was luke warm and had barely any toppings(super unlike freemans) and my base did not appear fresh(again unlike freemans). I would say go there if you want cheap pizza and mostly friendly staff, but avoid it on a Tuesday if you want to eat before next century.

A great place for a couple beers and cheap(but very edible pizzas). Staff always helpful and it probably does capture some of the student market. Worth stopping in for a pint if you are passing by.

Quiet pub by evening and super fly dance venue after 11pm, Freeman and Grey is a good venue along Ponsonby road for catching up with a group of friends. The DJ plays a mix of 90’s to current hits in an eclectic fashion that is bound to have you dancing wildly(or tapping your foot wildly while you wish you were dancing) and screaming«omg, I haven’t heard this for AGES!» the next!

Something about this place really doesn’t work. In its defence, nothing has ever really worked here — something about the space is a bit lackluster. I’ve been here a few times and every time come away disappointed — the food is always a bit poorly executed and there’s lots of better options available, especially on Ponsonby Road. This might be the kind of place to go if every other bar was full when you’re going to watch the rugby but otherwise I’d give it a miss.

On a girls night out, Freeman & Grey was a great spot to stop. We ordered the cheese platter and two pizzas using the super free pizza discount for joining the loyalty club. The cheese board was v. large and would of feed about four I reckon, we couldn’t finish it, although we did order extra bread. The pizzas are a great size, small enough for an individual serving and unlike other discount pizza offerings actually delivered on a tasty pizza base filled with toppings. I will be back the next time I’m looking for a cheap eat in ponsonby.

After a 30h flight from Germany to Auckland we were searching for a quick bite on Ponsonby Rd. The outer appearance of Freeman&Grey as well as the good looking(and with 4 $ — during happy hour — cheap) pizzas catched our eye. We were served really fast & friendly. The pizzas are really great for that prize(you might need 2 in order to fight a big appetite) and the flavours are interesting(e.g. pumpkin and pine-nuts). However the dessert(baked cheese cake) wasn’t that great, pretty expansive and tasted a little like freezer. The ambiente was fine — brick walls, wooden tables and nice oldies playing during dinner-time. All in all, we might return for some pizzas, but will avoid the dessert and the expansive drinks.

A friend and I came here to have a long overdue catch up and a cheap pizza! Unfortunately we were very disappointed, the main reason being the service. We sat at our table trying to eye up a waitress to firstly bring us a drinks menu, then another long wait until she took our orders, then another long wait for our wine(with dirty glasses that we had to ask to be changed) and then another long wait until we got our very disappointing pizza(which was cold!). Anyway you get my point… the only thing I think this place has going for it is its location and it is quite a social spot for a cheeky after work drink.

It’s all about the $ 4 pizzas here. They offer them between 12−2pm and 5−7pm daily. Huge range of pizzas and they are an excellent size for the price. Haven’t tried any of the other menu items. If you sign up to their loyalty club though you get discounted house beer and wine which is definite plus. Great location and the atmosphere and décor is great as well. Works for a relaxed drink and bit to eat during the day and early evening, as well as for bigger and later nights.

Good beer selection. Atmosphere is nice and cozy but despite the great presentation and good crust the pizzas lack flavor.

Have heard a few(good) things about ‘Freeman & Grey’ so today was the day… On first impressions the place is nothing special inside, TV with sport broadcasting is not really a ‘selling point’ for me, however $ 4 pizza’s hit the spot. The three of us ordered Anatra(duck), Funghi(Vege), Pollo(chicken), Lamb & Kawakawa pizza with fries, 2 glasses of Stoneleigh Pinot(not the best) and tap beer. Pizza was thin crust, tasty and you may need 2 if you’re(super) hungry, nonetheless great value! Our waitress was brutally honest saying she dropped one of our pizza’s on the floor, so there would be a slight delay… smile. Friendly, cheap-and-cheerful, happy hour menu 12−2pm &5−7pm daily, I think! Incredible value: $ 10 fixed daily menu including pasta, fish-n-chips and steak sandwich. Totes amaze.

The $ 42 super jugs are a rip off, as the equate to 3 and 1⁄3 pints, which prices them around $ 13 each. You can get the same pint for $ 11. Kind of defeats the purpose if buying on bulk… however this place is nice and if they change this I’d make it my local!

Great spot, friendly staff and $ 4 pizza happy hours. Highly recommended. Great if you work nearby and can drop in for lunch or $ 4 pizza between 5.00−7.30pm

I love how this place looks. When you drive past it, you totally want to go in — it just looks inviting. Cool colours, always packed outside on a sunny evening or a sunny weekend. You should definitely pop in, I do recommend that. We met some friends here for a few drinks on a Friday night after work before heading to Orphan’s Kitchen. I almost feel like I can’t review this place because all I did was sit there while my friends brought the drinks to me. I didn’t go to the bar once, or have any interaction with any wait staff at all — so let’s factor that into my review, or lack thereof. I think they do a pizza deal during some sort of happy hour — from recollection that’s why we ordered a couple. I’m pretty sure they were only $ 5 or something, but I have to say, they were pretty average. I am a big fan of sauce(totally Manu«where is ze sauce» mentality), and that was severely lacking. The pieces of pumpkin were under cooked and it was just bland. Unfortunately, kids, that’s what my review is limited to. I would definitely go back to try again and I would probably order more food again because I’m hoping it was a case of I didn’t eat/order the right thing. Having looked at the menu online right now, it looks like a pleasant enough menu. However, I wouldn’t rush to go back, there’s plenty of places I would prefer to spend my money. But if all you’re looking for is a simple drink, place to hang out, somewhere close to Ponsonby Food Court then it’s a good option.

Great service. Went there for a quiet quick meal with partner and son. Got 2 free beers and a $ 4 pizza. What a deal. Served everyday from 5−730pm. My partner had a prawn dish and a stuffed zucchini dish. I will be back. They also had live music. We went early poor fella playing was mean but bugger all people. Surely will fill up later. On ya Freeman & Grey

On Tuesdays they have Taco Tuesdays where tacos are only $ 2! They don’t advertise this, but I’ve been a few times. The tacos are alright, not the best. They have chicken or mince that comes with lettuce and little guac. Would totally reccomend it.

I went here last night and i’ll tell ya what I can remember. Firstly, and most importantly, the music was really good. Like not club bangers, but stuff you can groove too. Think Jamiroquai. The drinks were good, although we only had normal boring stuff so I didn’t get to really test the bartenders. But they were friendly and helpful. There is cool outdoor seating and obviously a a lot indoor. The dancefloor is big and waiting for ya. It’s in a great spot on Ponsonby Road so you’re super close to anywhere else you want to go. A really cool edition to the Ponsonby scene.

Freeman & Grey is a fairly new addition to Ponsonby Road and they’ve managed to pump the place full of patrons thanks to numerous deals such as ‘$ 40 for $ 100 worth of food and drink’ on deal websites etc. I haven’t been to Freeman & Grey during the day, and I’m sure their menu is fairly nice if not standard upmarket drinking establishment food. But I have set foot into Freeman & Grey at night and it’s not an experience I’ll be repeating in a while. Maybe I’m just old??? Freeman & Grey on a Saturday night reminds me of the Waterfront Bar back in the early 2000s… drunk teenagers falling over themselves while dancing to some tragic zm anthem and just general chaos. I stayed all of 10 minutes before heading across the road to Burger Fuel for a bacon backfire and calling it a night.

It was the beginning of my boyfriend’s 4 week holiday off work and it was my day off work. We decided it is sunny enough for us to enjoy a drink or two or three at a location where we can over look the city and enjoy a giggle. We settled on Freeman & Grey and were not disappointed. When we arrived the host was extremely friendly and asked us where we preferred to sit, since we were out to get a little bit tipsy and naughty we decided it would be a good idea to take our shenanigans upstairs. In our defense it was an extremely hot day! Although the website was misleading(talked about brunch) I brushed that aside and order the chicken and mushroom pasta. It was delicious and creamy and went down really well with my passionfruit mojito. After our meal we continued with our afternoon festivities and enjoyed the wide range of cocktails Freeman & Grey had to offer. The cocktails had the right amount of ice and it was clear the bartender wasn’t stingy with the vodka, loves it!
