Elite Event: Beauty & Botanicals

Fantastic event! I have yet to find someone who knows something about wavy/​curly hair, and viola! I came to hair heaven. Not only did I get some curly hair tips, but I also walked away with some samples for some awesome product!
The DIY cocktails were a hit. I really enjoyed seeing everyone’s creations and experimenting with gin. Literally, anything with Gin and you can always sign me up!
It was great to meet some new faces, and also get our faces made up. Superb event yet again from Alex. I had no clue Killer Hair existed until last weekend.

I loved the great space of Killer Hair salon at Corinthian Hall of the iconic Masonic Lodge in Newton for the girls only ‘Beauty and Botanical’ Unilocal event with Alex. The team were very fun and inviting when we at first were all mingling awkwardly not sure what to do.
But once I had my makeup done by the awesome Nicola Harvey then I was feeling more attractive after having Bronchitis all week. Being off the alcohol because of antibiotics I missed the Gin cocktail on arrival but it was fun to make my own pretty inventive mocktail. Very refreshing for the throat.
Then came the hair — the main event. I opted for a French plat and some curls by the talented Kenji Fukuchi — the Japanese stylist with Precision (as his funky business card states).
I have to give a thumbs up for the work Kenji and the team do with Ronald McDonald House giving the families there haircuts. What a beautiful initiative. Should I have an event I would love Kenji to give me a ‘Hair up’ and call Nicola for a makeover.
I had a good night and it was nice to see all the lovely ladies looking glam on a dull Friday night in a cool space that I could happily go and get my hair done at. Good work team. Thanks again Alex for the opportunity. Stay Good, Beautiful and True!

I think this has to be my favourite Unilocal elite event ever! So much fun! I had a blast creating my own signature cocktail, getting my hair and make-​up done and getting to chat to wonderful fellow Unilocal ladies. I wasn’t sure I was in the right place initially as it was so quiet but after walking up the stairs an amazing hair salon was revealed. With large windows and plenty of greenery I can imagine Killer Hair is a very relaxing place to get your hair attended to.
Killer Hair is an amazing hair studio full of wonderful stylists to suit all styles and needs. I was honoured to have Ella Webster aka Miss Victory Violet style my hair. Ella is known for her retro and pin up hairstyles and I was very happy with my curls and waterfall braid. My makeover from Nicola was fantastic, focusing on my eyes and eyebrows (one day I will have killer eyebrow game!).
Creating the cocktails was a lot of fun, especially with such interesting and beautiful ingredients. It may have been a bit dangerous not having a measure for the gin as I may have been a bit on the generous side with my gin pours… Luckily there was also tasty food to soak up some of the alcohol. The Midnight Baker’s ‘Freedom Loaf’ - (gluten and dairy free buckwheat bread) topped with smashed avocado and edamame definitely hit the spot. Followed by The Caker’s delicious cupcakes.

Two words: HOME RUN! As you walk up the carpeted stairs you wonder if you’re really heading in the right direction to a boutique salon (especially as you pass the dance studio). But then you see the space and you get exactly what the Kellys are trying to achieve with a name like Killer Hair and this unconventional industrial space.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a lovely smile and a refreshing gin cocktail. As we walked in three Killer Hair stylists were showcasing three incredibly different genres of hairstyle: modern, vintage, edgy/​raver. The energy in the place was electric, even though I was a little skeptical how 4 – 5 stylists and 2 make up artists were going to get through all of us in a reasonable amount of time. Then, when Steve gave his speech (which he did very well though I could see he was a bit nervous), I felt assured we were in good hands for the rest of the night. Even though we didn’t get to meet Mimi (unfortunately due to a sick little one), Steve said that she was an avid Unilocaler and upon reflection of the evening you could tell that even though she wasn’t present her influence was. By this I mean the attention to details, the intention of all the decisions made for the night and the relatively seemless way the event made a room full of incredible women feel incredible about themselves.
After my makeover with Nicola, I thanked her for a new me and she said no it was just an enhance version of someone that was always there. The gin drink invention station and contest was pure genius and rather generous with the Bombay Sapphire. The Midnight Baker provided excellent dairy/​gluten free bread and the smashed avo/​edamame was inspirational. Unfortunately I didn’t get to try any of the cake but it did look good.
Ultimately, I don’t envy the high bar that Alex has set for herself but look forward to her future attempts to do so! #feelingohsospecial #itsgoodtobeelite

Not only were we offered scrumptious gin cocktails upon entry, turn the corner and behold (!) Killer Hair’s gorgeous art deco style salon, buzzing with activity.
The hair and makeup stylists had a very busy (and productive!) evening, adding ‘suave’ to the mingling Unilocalers. One of KH’s co-​owners (Steven) gave my hair some love, transforming my frizzy coif into soft, silky waves. This, coupled with the makeover by Nicola Harvey stylists, made it difficult for fellow Unilocalers to recognize me (being so accustomed to all that helmet-​creased hair ;)).
The passion of the hair & makeup stylists was palpable (I’m fairly certain Steven could have spent another hour on my hair, he was getting really excited about all of its ‘potential’- he even did some layering around the front!).
Outside of the free hair and makeup, we enjoyed drinks from the ‘make your own’ gin cocktail stand — helllllo Bombay Sapphire, antipodes sparkling water, fresh herbs, edible flowers etc). The Midnight Baker provided nibbles (that loaf topped with avo/​edamame was a dream!) and the sweet treats were thanks to The Caker.
Overall a stellar event and a fantastic way to spend a Friday evening. Thanks as always to Alex D. for pulling it all off!

The perfect girls night out is all about originality (and cake and ice cream — of course!). Alex and the team at Killer Hair put on a fabulously original event that made all the lovely ladies who attended the event, look fabulous.
Beauty comes from within but a little make-​over simply makes a women shine a little brighter! The two ladies who ran the mini make-​over make-​up stations worked some serious magic. Everyone looked amazing! Sarah H. and Rebekah M. walked away with smokin hot eyes and OMG, Georgie B., and Neera looked super sexy in their killer shades of lipstick!
I loved the Art Décor style studio space with its black and white theme and curtain of hanging plants! It was great to see some different genres of hairstyles being showcased at the start of the event. It really set the tone for the evening. Steve and his team somehow managed to cut, curl and blow-​dry an incredibly diverse group of women’s hair in record time!
The Caker and the Midnight Baker put on a lovely little spread for us to nibble on, while we mingled and waited for our make-​overs. The mini cupcakes were delightful and the «Freedom Loaf» was a real smash hit. And if that wasn’t enough, the Ponsonby Bistro set-​up a ‘design your own cocktail’ station’ that unleashed a little more creativity!
A big thank you to Alex and Killer Hair for a fabulously fun event! The atmosphere was electric!

First of, a big THANKS to Alex and the Killer Hair team for pulling together an absolutely amazing elite event last night. After a gruelling week of work and study, a glam girlie night was exactly what we needed to salut the weekend. Really enjoyed the Killer Hair studio and hearing the NY story. The vibe really does come through in the space. The staff were so friendly and really seemed to be onto it, so definitely wouldn’t mind coming back for a cut and style sometime! The make up artists did such a phenomenal job too, really enjoyed learning a few eye make up tips and trips from pros. Further, the food was ON FLEEK (oh yeahhh bringing fleek into the Unilocalverse) absolutely adored the decadent little chocolate cupcakes from the Caker, I’m definitely signing my self up to their new cook book ASAP. Was also great to try the Midnight Bakers loaves. Who knew gluten free and celiac friendly food could be so delicious?! Lastly, build your own Bombay Saph cocktail, YASS. Al in all, such a knockout of an event!

Our hair was done by the lovely Ella and my makeup by the totally engaging Jamie… And we came out feeling like super models…
Make your own drinks was a great idea — I kept drinking mine before I could take a picture though, so no chocolate for me ;)

How glorious to have a girls-​only (glam) Unilocal event: transforming everyone to look 50 million dollars with a team of hair stylists & makeup artists — hats off! As we arrived, a gin cocktail was offered before ‘The Midnight Baker’ showcased their gluten-​free or wheat-​free bread/​s with an avocado-​smash that was to ‘crave’ for. ‘The Caker’ also featured (on the table) with some mini chocolate cupcakes & individual over-​sized blueberry cupcakes with extravagant icing: delicious! Steven (Killer Hair owner) along with his team were incredibly kind & generous with their time & expertise reinventing most Unilocaler’s hair do’s with curls, braids, straightening or hair-​up. Many happy Unilocalers. The two makeup artists were also talented and engaging with their advice and transformative touch-​ups using M.A.C cosmetics. Love the ‘Candy yum yum’ (pink lipstick). Lastly we were all invited to be interactive & create our very own gin cocktail! There was an Instagram Competition for the best-​looking drink! What better way to spend a wet wintery evening than with the awesome Unilocal elite crew, laydees only! I had a strong intuition that tonight was going to rock as soon as I was handed a gin cocktail at the door. Creative cocktail making, superb hair advice and styling by Killer Hair team (great work Kenji beautifying my wild locks), a fab new lip colour by Nicola Harvey and the midnight bakers yummy treats. Wow Unilocal,is there anything you can’t do?!

Thank you Alex and the team at Killer Hair for a Killer (with a capital K) night– such fun!
Absolutely adored the space that Killer Hair has– with it’s hanging greenery, white walls and tall black framed mirrors to admire our lovely dry blow waves, amazingly artful up-do’s and popping makeup touch-​ups done by their extremely talented staff.
Great start to the night with the most delicious gin cocktail as well as a very good looking and fun create-​your-​own cocktail bar. Accompanied well by the nutritious and delicious Midnight baker bread and Caker cupcakes, yum. Friend and I waited patiently for our hair stylist, Bex– and so worth it! She is absolutely brilliant and somehow managed to give me a curly, voluminous pin-​up despite my short length. I wish I had eyes at the back of my head to actually see the beautiful creation she made with my own eyes– while others could admire her handiwork properly. Had a peek in the mirror at least and fell in love.
Would love to come back– the team are obviously endowed with mad skills and super lovely and their space is wonderful

Had a FABULOUS time last night! Everything was super duper awesome, from the venue to the delicious foods and drinks and of course, getting our hair done by the team at Killer Hair!
The event titled ‘Beauty & Botanicals’ was one for the ladies only, but it was great fun and the atmosphere was off the hook! It was held at Killer Hair, a trendy-​chic, black and white, funky hanging plants themed hairdressing studio in Newton, which is run by Steven and Mimi (unfortunately Mini couldn’t attend). Steven was great though — very welcoming, generous and happy to share his wealth of knowledge of all things related to hair.
I couldn’t tell you the ultimate highlight of the night, because, well, everything was fantastic. I LOVED sampling The Midnight Baker’s ‘Freedom Loaf’ — one was a homemade gluten and dairy free buckwheat bread and the other natural and contained oats. We devoured slices of this amazing bread, all topped with smashed avocado. It was very moorish! We also enjoyed The Caker’s mini cakes — dark chocolate ones and a blueberry number, both scrumptious!
For the drinks, there was a ‘make your own’ gin cocktail stand — a table laden with Bombay Sapphire, various drink accompaniments, ice, fruits, vegetables, edible flowers and freeze dried raspberries. Our challenge of the night was to create our own cocktail, give it a name and then upload it to social media (Instagram/​Yelp page) with the hashtag #beautyandbotanicals. The best name won a prize from The Wellington Chocolate Factory (congrats to Rebecca S. for winning!!!). It was super interactive and I really enjoyed it — my cocktail was quite unusual, being garnished with slices of cucumber, red capsicum and rosemary, but it tasted delicious!
Last but not least, we all got our hair styled by one of the team members of Killer Hair. Monique blow dried my hair thoroughly, and at the same time started on the twirls. She then softly curled my hair — it was lovely! Not only did Monique do a great job, but she was so friendly, genuine and gave me great advice about my current hair problem (dryness) and also what would suit my hair (as I have never coloured it). I am now totally keen to get a flamboyage! She also gave me samples to take home, including a shampoo and conditioner, which I used on my hair this morning — it smells heavenly!
Overall, another amazing Unilocal Elite event — Alex, you never fail to amaze me with your organising of these events! Also, a HUGE thanks to the team at Killer Hair and The Midnight Baker — I loved every minute of it!!!

Pretty sure this is my favorite Unilocal Elite Event so far. A glamtastic evening with a bunch of lovely Unilocal ladies, fab updos, makeup magic, and a make your own cocktail contest — oh, and cake! What could go wrong?
The folks from Killer Hair were totally badass and generous with tips about how to tame our locks for a night out. I have to admit that I am tempted to jump ship from my current stylist for the beauty that is KH!
My dreams of late about finding the perfect standout lip color were realized by makeup artist Nicola Harvey! Also totally artful and generous with makeup tricks. I need more of that in my life!
I ADORED the amazing bread from Midnight Baker, paired with a lovely avocado/​pea spread. And the mini cupcakes from The Caker??? Wowwwwww I want more of that in my life.

With a make your own cocktail station supplied with Bombay gin, Antipodes sparkling water, elderflower cordial it was all on at one stage ! I saw a number of Unilocalers getting their cocktail on .
Some sweet treats provided by The Caker and a moorish savoury buckwheat bread by The Midnight Baker made the night all the more cool .
A lot of great makeup tips shown by those lovely lady’s and a killer quick style of my hair I was one happy Unilocaler. This was a awesome night and put your hands up for Alex, who again never fails to impress !

This was my first Unilocal event and I am so glad I came. Alex was one amazing hostess and Killer Hair was just the perfect venue to have a Glam Evening. The team of hair stylists and make up artists were giving everyone a make over — Bex transformed my boring hair into a head full of bouncy curls, I wished I looked like this everyday… The Midnight Baker brought in some delicious gluten-​free/​wheat-​free bread served with the tastiest avocado smash with edamane beans, she also brought in some sweet treats!
We also got to create our own gin based cocktail! Which was super fun! I saw plenty of Unilocalers getting their creative on and making some extravagant looking drinks!
I can’t wait for the next event! Thanks once again Alex!!! :D It was nice meeting everyone!
