Looking for over priced asian merchandise that you could buy for way less at Avondale shops? The Atrium is the place to go. I remember walking around the atrium looking for something quirky to wear out clubbing. I figured if I wanted something cheap that would last me the whole night then the mall of asian shops would be the place to go. I was so wrong, so damn wrong! Let me tell you why I was annoyed because the shops sold the usual items but just priced ridiculously. I am not going to pay $ 100 for a dress I can buy at every other asian store for $ 20 or less if I negotiate wisely. I can’t even excuse the pricing at the atrium, the place doesn’t look that great.

This shopping centre has always seemed slightly out of place to me. It seems strange that a place which has such a prime location is always so barron seeming. It houses a a lot of independently owned Asia fashion stores, which all seem kind of cool but they never seem to have any customers, the mall is always dead. You would think that somewhere along the line this mall would have attracted all the chain stores which fill up most malls, and it would become another busy boring mall. But no, it just sits there wedged between Queen Street and Skycity, one of the most heavy foot traffic vacinities in all of New Zealand, just doing nothing but selling a bit of homemade Asian jewellery. It has quite a popular food court which is accessible directly from the street.

A very weird building actually. You go in here expecting to find a mall full of shops, but it’s half empty! The shops that are in here are mostly Asian stores (some decent clothes to be found here.; and by ‘Asian’ I mean Asian owned and Asian brands)…the toilets are pretty gross in this place, but there’s a massive mirror so it’s kind of helpful if you need one! There’s an average cafeteria down stairs and there’s also a cupcake store on the entry level. You can access the Elliot Street Hotel though this mall too (and if you are in a wheel chair you will need to access the building through the hotel itself (yes, very bad design… obviously this building is pretty old).

Aside from its food court, which has a great multi-cultural variety to tickle your taste buds, the shopping at the Atrium is asian-centric to the max. The well laid-out mall contains wonderful independently owned businesses: high-class fashion, cheap and cute numbers you admire on your Korean classmates, and merchandise from the oriental corners of the world. Some of the shop owners are truly lovely, and others will ignore you the entire time. My friend found everything Hello Kitty she desired, another found Super Junior band stuff you can’t get in NZ, and I’ve found some sophisticated clothes that actually fit my petite self.
It’s a different mall for those tired of the same old styles, and perhaps a slice of home for Asians living in Auckland.

I loooooooove the Atrium. I really enjoy introducing new people to this place because they inevitably love it. My favourite places to eat there is Umi Sushi and the Gourmet Thai! Umi for its famous $ 1 sushi and the Gourmet Thai for its $ 9.90 cashew chicken dish and the five star chicken (secret recipe, just try it you’ll thank me later). It really packs out at lunch time and always has a very diverse crowd. You can also get free parking for one hour when you purchase food from any of the stores, just ask!

This is a food court like no other. You take an escalator down underground to what is an Asian food lovers dream. It can be quite overwhelming, but awesome if you know what you’re looking for. I’d suggest you take your time to go around all the stalls and figure out what’s good and what’s a little strange, it’ll be worth it in the end.
Every store is packed with delicious cuisine. The fragrance of Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and a whole lot more. I love going here especially for the Vietnamese Phở, a chicken noodle soup that’s refreshing, filling and healthy. There’s also a brilliant dim sum, which means you can get your Yum Cha fix on the go.
It’s the perfect place to lunch during the week.

The Atrium on Elliot Food Court is a staple mid-town pit stop for anyone looking for a great variety of cheap eats. Unlike other food courts in the CBD, the Atrium has always been bright and clean, with decent places to sit and eat, and with a busy, happy vibe.
Here you’ll find all the usual suspects — Indian, Korean, Chinese, and Malaysian cuisine, along with sushi, kebab, and bakery places, as well as more exotic stuff like Halal Indonesian.
There are also other cafes, restaurants, and food stalls dotted around the Atrium, selling everything from shaved ice and cupcakes, to fresh-squeezed juice and gelato.
