Quite a nice watering hole tucked down by the water. Auckland appears to be brimming with craft beer joints selling actual craft beer, and 1Tun is no exception. Their selection changes regularly(at least, according to their marketing it does!) and they’ve good a good variety of local NZ brews on tap. We worked our way through their IPA selection, with 8 on tap at the time, and the bar staff were happy to help with suggestions. The food is absolutely NOT vegetarian friendly; be prepared to eat kumara chips and olives, or a delicious quinoa salad, but nothing substantial to go with the beer selection.

If you like real good beers and not the standard and boring Heineken that place is for you. Loads of local brewery and all types of beers. From ipa to wheat to white beers etc. Very well located and very friendly staff. A great place to have a cold on with your buddies.

Just attended the Ladies’ Beer Master Class and had a fantastic time! The beer sisters are extremely passionate about craft beer to the point where it is infectious! It was awesome to chat with Tammy, the brewer of Mata Beer as well. She is also super passionate and knowledgeable about beer. I loved being able to pick her brain about geeky beer stuff. Not only was the beer fantastic(well most), but the pairings were very smart! My favourite pairing was the Hallertau #1 and the spicy fried squid. It was great to wash down all the beer with some nibbles. What I really love is how often they rotate the taps. Like most craft beer lovers, I constantly like to try the new and interesting. It is not often I order the same beer when I go out. This is easy with the 19 taps and 30+bottles they have at 16Tun I can never get the same thing twice if I want(well, I could but it would be hard). One thing I was not the biggest fan of was the décor. I know, it’s a small thing, but the copper hurts my eyes a bit. It definitely looks like a dude did the fit out of this place. Not a bad thing, but to get some more ladies in the door it might be worth while getting some colour(that is not black or copper) integrated into the look and feel of the place. It kind of looks cold and hard. Will definitely come back again(you’ll see me at their birthday party August 8th most likely).

Lots of local beers yes as all the reviewers said. But really only for hop heads where 16 of 18 draft beers were IPAs plus one good milk stout and one cider. Sometimes I think this hoppy IPA trend has hopped too far. We had a few apps and they were all really great. It’s great to see so many bars working the craft beer set now, so keep it up.

Our hungover group of chums, in a similar fashion to war criminals, sought asylum/sanctuary/safe haven. 16 Tun was our Brazil and welcomed us within it’s coppery embrace. The sun broke and our spirits arose, much like being on an overnight train with three of the most attractive non-English speaking beach volleyball players you could imagine. The ribs rendered their eater a dribbling mess of orgiastic blasphemy, such was his delight we thought he’d need more than a finger bowl.

Great beer selection in a great location. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that you could get a «sampler pack» of six or eight beers for a very good price until it was too late, but that’s certainly my recommendation and what I will do on any future visits. My service, however, was less than ideal. Not welcoming or all that friendly. I went elsewhere after one beer and had much, much better service. Free WiFi. Food looked good but I didn’t have any.

A great place for an after-work or pre-dinner drink. And there’s certainly a lot from which to choose! Recently focused on craft beers sold in limited quantities and struck off the giant paper roll that serves as a menu upon the wall, 16 Tun encourages drinkers to broaden their horizons beyond the familiar. Crates of beer tastes further enhance the possibility for interesting discovery. And if you need advice, the dapper and friendly bar staff are always happy to help. Nice one!

The ginger infusion beer is phenomenal! While on a walking tour of the city, it started to rain so this was a great place to stop in and get dry and have a tall, cold one. As we sat«Sixteen Tons» came on by Tennessee Ernie Ford. How fitting. Being that we weren’t driving, my brother proceeded to order the strongest beers in the house, listed on the wall. With each one, he liked it better than the next. We didn’t get a chance to try the food, but that was because we’d just eaten elsewhere… but what passed by looked delicious. My favorite part about this place is the«tun» of craft beers they offer. And the cool community seating. it makes it possible to get a couple seats when you are in dire need of a beer when the place is busy.

Atmosphere = On a Monday night we were the only ones in here but love the décor. Food was excellent, I recommend the ribs-HUGE!!! The Vege Patch is another absolute fave. So so so good. And last but not least– best kumara fries in the whole of Nz. Burger was ok– nothing special. Chicken was ok– nothing major. Staff– only 2 people on– Matt the manager greeted us with a big smile. Georgia the waitress was outstanding. Not often you get such amazing service in Auckland. What a tribute to the company.

Ate here on a public holiday — no additional surcharge — was greeted with a free taster of beer the moment we sat down, and a friendly barman who on the second taster found a perfect beer for us! Had lunch which was delicious, a cold beer and plenty of ice cold water on a hot day. Service was exceptional, prices reasonable and an overall welcoming atmosphere. I definitely recommend, and wouldn’t hesitate to return. (had been at another restaurant nearby, sat for 10 mins without service so we left — the complete opposite here!!)

Met up here with some fellow Unilocalers before heading over to a Bingo event. If you’re a beer lover, come here. Even if you’re not(I’m more of a wine person), give it a go. In the three times I’ve been here(yes, I’m a regular now), I’ve had good experiences. 1st time: no beer, wings, chicken morsels, and kumara fries. UMG kumara fries. 2nd time: Panhead Stout, Blacktop Oat. I lean more towards dark beer, and unfortunately they ran out of the Coffee Stout that I wanted to try earlier in the week(blast) 3rd time: Rochdale Cider with ginger lime. Not a beer, but still something to do with my hands. On food: Good pub food. Sharable plates make it easy to order a few plates amongst a group of people, that way you can just focus on the drinks and good company. On beer: They have PLENTY available. They write down what they have on tap on a sheet of brown paper on the wall and rotate as they run out. If they don’t have it on tap, they have an extensive cooler filled with bottles of local craft beer(and cider, if that’s more your thing). Unfortunately, as a nonbeer drinking and struggling Paleo, the oat stout that I had gave me a headache that lasted me into the morning. On cider: A refreshing take on cider, as it wasn’t too sweet and the ginger & lime hint was a nice touch. I love ginger, so this was an easy pick for me. My friend loves beer, so I took her here to get a «toolbox» of beer, in which you can have up to eight beers to taste($ 24 is a great deal, I feel). She chose four beers and was handed a complimentary beer passport to log her thoughts. Needless to say, she’s added a few entries since then. Definitely a great place to meet up after work, after dinner, or anytime you just want to hang out!

In a country where the liquor industry is dominated giants, it’s always refreshing to see a new free house open. It means we don’t have to drink the same mass-produced beers and personally, I think it’s pretty endearing to go it alone. 16TUN is the latest addition to Wynyard Quarter, a hot spot for neighbouring corporates. It’s located right next to the entrance to the ASB building on Jellicoe St(BEWARE, Jellicoe St doesn’t have St numbers) and when we went at 5:30pm it was not surprisingly packed full of suits. There’s plenty of seating inside, including a couple of large high top tables — perfect for groups, but given the sun was shining we opted to sit outside. As is to be expected, the beer & cider list is HUGE. Like 10 pages huge. Fortunately the bar staff are experts and happy to provide you with a tasters. The only problem with this is that it means it can take a while to get served. When I went to get my drink the barman had provided the girls in front of me with about 8 samples to try, each with somewhat lengthy descriptions. I think if this is going to be your service standard you need to have enough staff to make sure that people who know what they want aren’t waiting for too long. The menu at 16TUN is also a winner. Lots of snacky, easy to share, good with beer options. We couldn’t get enough of the kumara fries and the buffalo wings were packed with the perfect amount of heat. The spice on the calamari reminded me of BBQ kettle chips, which was strange but delicious. They’ve only been open maybe a month but is seems 16TUN is already drawing the crowds and it’s not hard too see why!

If «craft beer heaven» sounds like your cup of tea(erm…pint of carbonated beverage?), then 16 Tun will make you very happy. Their menu consists of about 5 pages of beer choices, with ~10 on tap and 30+ bottle options. They carry a wide range of small local labels, and I particularly enjoyed Behemoth’s Chur, Liberty’s Yakima Monster and 8 Wired’s Semiconductor. Yum. I definitely recommend going for the tasting rack — not only because you look really freakin’ suave carrying a toolbox of beer, but also because you’ll get a rounded sampling of various brews(without the hangover). Plus 4 generously-sized tasters for $ 12 is mighty reasonable, if you ask me. From the dark depths of Epic’s coffee and fig porter to the easy sippin’ of Hallertau’s Kolsch No 1 lager, there’s really something to suit everyone’s tastes(even great local wines if that’s your libation of choice). They have a decent sized seating area too, including a few tables outside(very necessary due to its popularity!) Will surely be back.

Watch this space! I recommend going to 16 Tun before word gets out and this place catches on fire. The on tap craft beer selection was up to scratch and is guaranteed to rotate with some stellar guest selections. The full rack is an 8 beer tasting rack at $ 24 which is quite a bargain compared to others around town. Although we didn’t get food we’ll be coming back to sample the tasty morsels on offer like the paua fritters and hot wings! Really friendly and knowledgeable staff ready to pour a pint and have a chat.
