First time we visit this place. It is an old church that has been turned into brewery, Jopen. We ordered carpaccio and grilles vegetables. The food was good, with abundant portions. The beer, Jopen, was also very tasty. All in all, a very good place to eat or go for drinks in the old area of Haarlem!

Such an awesome spot. This is a micro brewery inside of a church — so when you go, be sure to let everyone know you’ll be worshipping at the ‘Church of Beer’. The interior is beautiful — red with copper and wood tables. There were about 8 beers to choose from. I got a nut brown ale, a hoppy /sweet one from America, and a hoppy one from Holland.

The beer is very good and lots of varieties, all brewed there. A large place but very busy — had a hard time finding a place at the bar relatively early on a Thursday night and it got much worse as the night went on. Had planned on food but with it being so busy and loud decided to try somewhere else for a more relaxing evening. Would be good for a group of friends.

Great night with colleagues from around the world. Good beer and ale selection which are brewed on the premises. Cheeseburger fantastic. Cooked perfectly, good portion size. Spacious interior and good bar service.

Jopenkerk is a great place to come to at all times of the day and for any meal. You can stop in throughout the day for coffee or tea and sandwiches, you can meet up with friends after work for some delicious beers and snacks, or you can have a really great dinner upstairs in the restaurant! I always recommend the Jopenkerk to anyone who’s never experienced it before.

All we stopped for was to have a beer at a brewpub in preparation for our imminent return to the environs of Beervana. The atmosphere here was McMenamins-like, but the beer was much more creative … well … in a Belgian sense that is. Don’t get me wrong, that’s no pejorative. Jopenkerk brews it’s own, they work hard at it, and they succeed. We didn’t eat anything so this is a half cooked review at best. Seems to me if your missing the«feel» of drinking a beer in the US, this place will do the trick as it’s environment felt like home to me. Just don’t look for the big screen TV with your favorite team going as flat in the fourth quarter as three day old beer. After all, this is Europe. You’ll be expected to have social skills while you imbibe.

Loved everything! We visited Haarlem and stopped here for lunch. Great beer, super-delicious pastrami sandwich, same for the two types of sausages, and the crunchy yummy fries. Service was nice and courteous.

Fantastic atmosphere, beer and music. Most importantly, there is a gluten-free beer option on the menu, Mongozo! It’s not made by Jopen but at least my fellow gluten-free peeps can enjoy a refreshing beer too: D

Let me start off by saying that the Jopen Kerk is worth a visit and definitely not your average watering hole. A bar in a converted church is pretty cool. It’s spacious with a great big bar, stained glass windows and copper brewing equipment. Their beer is good and they’ve won quite a few awards on international beer festivals. I simply prefer other styles but that’s me. I’d go there for the bar rather than the restaurant, which I found to be a bit overpriced for the food it serves. On the other hand, the location is great and if you’re after a food & beer pairing meal, they do a decent job. All in all: not to be missed on a trip to Haarlem, but do keep in mind the city has plenty of other choices.

We had a lovely meal upstairs. The server was very patient explaining the menu items. The adults had the beef stew which was wonderfully prepared. We had asked for a recommendation of a beer to accompany and the dark beer was superb. Our kids had mini burgers which they loved. All in all a fantastic evening in a beautiful surrounding.

We’re not huge beer connoisseurs, so… The locals recommend it. It’s a fun environment(fairly quiet) with friendly service. It’s worth a visit while in Haarlem.

Delicious beers across the board. Food in the terrace is good, food upstairs(full menu) is outstanding. This has served as my hub while in Haarlem, and I don’t think I’ll tire of it. If you’re from the US, try the koyt – a style I haven’t encountered before. Kind of a cross between a Christmas beer and a sour, good in any season or weather. And don’t miss the jobligatiebier. Dark, deep flavor of espresso forward mix with balanced hop(it IS a black IPA after all). Try this with some fries and mayo to bring out huge forward chocolate, caramel and fig. But at all times this beer is approachable and will please all beer lovers.

A beer place to swoon over. I came here after it was recommended to me by an employee of the hostel I’m staying at. He mentioned beer & church and I just couldn’t resist being part of this paradox. Drinking beer instead of wine in an old church is beautiful mayhem. I sat at the bar and was a bit confused as to who I had to order from the Bartender or the waiters, after about 10 mins of staring aimless into space… I wasn’t in as rush so I was just letting them get to me when they had time. The menu was in Dutch so I was clueless of what anything was, but the waiter was knowledgable of the menu and helped by recommending me something that would be to my liking it was a hoppy IPA& I’m sorry but I can’t seem to remember which one exactly I tried. Any who, besides the wait at the beginning I had an amazing time. Bring a group of friends and make a party out of it, it really is such an amazing venue.

Cool property! The old church with all the tanks and all… Wide open space. Beer is ok. I tried 9 different ones; they didn’t knock my socks off, but they weren’t bad. One formula was from 1401, so that was pretty cool to try. Food was good. Again– didn’t knock my socks off, but not bad.

I really like this bar/church. Love the interior of the old church and the big selection of house brewed beers. I really enjoy going there quite early in the evening, as later the bar gets very busy and there is no place to stand/sit. You also need to deal with groups/couples of men standing around and just looking at women from their head to toes… not a nice feeling. During the nice weather there are some tables placed on the small square and you can enjoy your beer in the sun, if you are lucky:)

I have to say that for this place I actually was thinking about writing two separate reviews: one for the Jopenkerk as a bar and one for the JopenKerk as a restaurant. For the Jopenkerk as a bar, I would like to give it 5 stars! They just have so many different and great beers there. For sure like the special beers they have every now and then(e.g. the«Malle Babbe» I can really recommend). I think their bokbeer(more for autumn) is always among the best bokbeers in Holland! For the bar part, I have to say I absolutely love their service also! If you are not sure which beer to choose, they will gladly tell you about the different beers and often will give you small taster glasses for different beers also. The one thing you have to be prepared for if you come to this place friday/saturday evening is that it will be packed. If you don’t like completely packed bars, this might not be the best place for you. However, if you arrive early enough, you have the possibility of sitting down in one of the nice comfortable chairs or on the longer tables with benches. One additional perk I like is that this place is active on the social media and also on Foursquare. Check in 10 times at this place with foursquare and the first beer is on them!(yeah, yeah, I am dutch :)) For the restaurant part I am a little bit less positive. I have only eaten there once and was not that impressed with the food. The food itself was not bad, but I had expected a lot more. The part I do like about it is that for each dish, they provide the best food-beer combination. So the restaurant part gets three stars from me, while the bar part for sure gets the 5 stars. This averages out to the 4 stars I gave :)

A great place to go for some nice beer made in Haarlem. They brew the beer right on site in an old church that is in a new section of Haarlem called Raaks. The beer is very good and they have many different kinds. One of my favorites is the Jopen Hoppen. They also have 1 or 2 seasonal beers on hand most of the time. In the fall this past year I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had pumpkin beer. The place is really cool to look around in and a great place to hang out and meetup with friends. It can be quite crowded on weekend nights. During the warmer months there is plenty of seating outside, but if it’s a really nice day, it will all be full. I’ve been here many times, but only ever for drinks so I cannot say how the food is.
