I had recently moved into the neighborhood and was really excited to try this resto due to its reputation. You really need to plan ahead to make a reservation here. You cannot just call on Friday and expect to have a table. Ok, no biggie. The food must be amazing. First, the cocktails — I had the Rhubarb Amsterdam, my partner had the Geranium gin tonic. Both were meh. Little flavor on mine. My partner’s was very unbalanced — the gin was overbearing. But the butter and bread made up for that — they were devine. The rest of the food, not so much. This is modern bistro food. Absolutely nothing amazing about it. The Flamkuche came in a strange to-go-looking box that sat awkwardly at our table taking up space horizontally and vertically on our small table and since it was deep, awkward to cut into the food. It was fine, but so it Flam’s in France, a fast food joint with the same type of pie. That’s what it reminded me of. The tartare coquille was good. But again, nothing out of this world. The Duitse wagu was just meat plated very nicely. I think our favorite«dish» were the fries!!! They were the only originally-seasoned thing at our table. We did appreciate the little ice cream cone at then end of the meal, when all we wanted to do was get out. BECAUSE!!! Worst of all our server was completely INSOLENT. When we asked questions about the food, she would reply with an air of arrogance. There was very much a I-cannot-be-bothered-with-you attitude about her. That’s when we were able to flag her down. We almost felt like we were begging to be served! Some of the other staff, however, was extremely nice — we should know, they were lovely ones that were actually attending us. If at least we would have gotten a better server, we could have let the uninteresting food pass because the place is really nice — the right amount of trendy, more on the elegant side. Will NEVER return.

Sorry but I’m disappointed:(it’s not even a gastrobar where things are supposed to just taste great. Here — not only presentation and the menu is horrible but also the taste of every single dish. Unfortunately, in the end, it’s not even cheap. 136EU for 2 persons(without a wine) is far far too much.

We made a last minute decision on a Saturday night and decided to come to Ron Gastrobar instead of Restaurant Adam, a place which has amazing reviews on tripadvisor and we will definitely try in the future. Ron was accommodating for a busy place as we made our reservation on the same day for 8 pm and still managed to land on a table. As a small treat, we were given some fresh bread, whipped butter with candied bacon on top and cornichon(heavenly). The 15 euro/dish items are something in between a tapas and main dish so you can definitely let your dinner date to have a taste of your food but don’t think you can share it. We ordered 4 dishes and 4 glasses of wine and cleaned them off with 2 cups of coffee, which all came under 100 euros = fair pricing. Service = 4.5(we were ignored a good 10 minutes at the beginning) Food = 5.5(I’m bumping it up, so what Unilocal?) Overall = 5!

Visiting Amsterdam during New Years presented a problem in getting reservations due to closings & the restaurants which were open filled up very early. We were excited to secure a reservation at Ron Gastrobar, one of Amsterdam’s Michelin starred restaurants. Starting with the good: this place is extremely accessible as far as Michelin starred places go– the prices are reasonable. Most dishes on the menu are € 15& we enjoyed a fabulous bottle of wine for € 45. We started with a charcuterie board– one of my favorite boards I’ve ever had ! We both loved the soft shell crab with yellow curry udon noodles! I loved the Jerusalem artichoke with crispy veal brains! My boyfriends favorite dish was the barbq spare ribs. They are not barbq like we have in the U.S. But delish nonetheless ! More of an Asian style barbq. We were too stuffed for dessert & did not order any desserts. But alas, everyone receives a mini ice cream cone after their meal. We were very disappointed with the service & surprised by the quality of staff in such a highly regarded restaurant. We were approximately 30 min late for our reservation because our über brought us to the wrong Ron Gastrobar location(oriental). We had the staff from Oriental contact Ron Gastrobar to warn them that we would be late. The hostess was friendly enough but our waiter was very rude initially. Speaking to a local/regular table he was waiting on. Making fun of us(in Dutch) for running late. We were seated for approximately 15 – 20 minutes before anyone even took our drink order. Our waiter was actually very competent & knowledgable about the menu but completely neglected our table… After the first course, he turned out table over to another person who was even less friendly than him. She was not attentive or competent. She struggled to even open our bottle of wine & had no idea how to pour wine properly. She even splashed /spilled it all over the table & did not even clean it up. The service was simply awful. Major disappointment & extremely surprising.

Nice Gastro bar concept, with very friendly staff. They have some interesting things on the menu, but unfortunately the menu is a bit complicated to figure out and you don’t have a clear sense of how much you might end up paying. The prices are extremely high in light of what you get! Paying € 15 for what is comparable to a small starter I expect it to be perfect and the serving to be perfect as well, but this was not quite the case when I visited. I was really missing water and when I dine at this level I expect complementary water for everything… For my drinks, meals and coffee… Unfortunately this was not the case. I ordered a GT to start with, then three local oysters seven with a vinaigrette followed by King crab with mash and a glass of white, finishing off with a Italian coffee. For my coffee they served me a miniature ice cream cone, which was quite nice, but given the choice I would have opted for water with my dishes. In general a nice place, but unless you brought your savings, You might want to finish off at Affrourtit, a small pub around the corner serving snacks and solid dishes for very reasonable prices.

The food was fantastic. Nice combinations and I like the concept with medium sized dishes. Sashimi on mackeril was very intresting and worth trying. The service was not good at all. They forgot our orders and were unobservant the whole evening.

I have no idea how, but luckily my Hotel concierge booked me a table for two and I was well impressed. Damn expensive for my USD exchange rate but I wanted to go all out with my date. And 5 Star French Gourmet is what we got. They have a series of great dishes which they all have a fixed price of 15 Euros. We didn’t get to experiment to much so I went with the German Steak and Potatoes, BBQ Ribs, my date with the Mackerel Sashimi, Marinated Salmon with apples(yes, I said«apples»). The dishes were works of art. The food — exploding with flavor. The staff very professional and attentive. Food did take some time to come, but you’ll forget about that wait after you dig in.

I’m all for fine dining, because I, like many here, really enjoy great, no– excellent food. So colour me surprised when I finished my meal that I was just feeling a little meh. And I get it, it’s a «gastrobar» but when you’re paying these prices, you expect service to be top notch and your food to be well thought out. Alas, neither of these were up to par. We ordered a bunch of little plates, quite a few cocktails between us, and wrapped it up with the most incredible dessert, which you can see from many reviews and photos. it’s Ron’s Egg! And my word, it was amazing. If I had known how good it was, I would have ordered 7 of these and been done with it. It was honestly my most favourite thing of the evening, followed veryvery closely by their Rhubarb Amsterdam cocktail. Which. oddly, had no rhubarb in the actual drink! All in all. this restaurant will not be making the cut for places I need to visit again. Unless someone else is picking up the tab or giving me food for free. Neither of which I can see happening in the near to distant future! Ha!

The food here was very good, but I’m giving 5 stars because the service was great. I asked our waitress about gluten free options and she went over and above to accommodate me. A co-worker(or manager) came over and went through the menu with me, giving me plenty of options and offering to adjust meals for me. They also sent over some gluten free bread for me to have before the meal, which was a nice treat. As far as the food, the ribs are awesome. We didn’t really feel like ribs, but they were recommended, so we ordered them anyway. I’m glad we did, because they were our favorite dish! We also got the bbq cabbage and cauliflower dishes. The cauliflower was a little better, but both were good. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal!

As an experienced foodie I can say that I do enjoy a good Gastropub experience just like any other but sometimes a chef can go a bit overboard in attempts to top the competitors. This I feel is the case with Ron’s Gastrobar. Although the venue is fantastic and service was always wonderful it still will be quite a wait for each and every dish or cocktail as items are served incredibly slow. The menu is written out extensively even when it comes to their cocktail list but what you will be served up may come as a bit of a let down. Portions are a bit strange, an order of grilled cabbage comes out almost the size of a T-bone steak where, even split by two people, how much cabbage can one consume before getting a bit sick to your stomach? The raviolis are super soft and filled with a super soft mushroom, in a sauce and topped with a raw egg yolk … served in a deep dish bowl, your provided fork won’t make it any better than soup within one slice. This very small dish in a very large bowl would be better served with a soup spoon. We opted out of the«Surprise Egg» dessert due to the fact that our waiter would not tell us what it was, even after I asked to be «hinted» the ingredients because I don’t like fruity jams or sauces and was afraid I might end up cutting into a white chocolate egg filled with something of this sort. We did order black coffees with a shot of amaretto which came with no cookie but mixed together and covered in whipped cream which we had to send back to be remade. A complimentary mini ice cream cone came out(served almost 20 minutes after our coffees were finished while we were still waiting on the check). Some sort of blueberry yogurt covered in dark chocolate and tropical(I’m guessing pineapple flavored) sprinkles. Note: those flavors mixed together were absolutely horrifying so we passed on those and set them aside. Other than loving the terrace and living in the neighborhood, I doubt we will return. Sometimes Less is more and not the other way around. It’s more a place to «See and Be Seen» and for those that want people to THINK they are«foodies» Summary: The food is beautiful to look at but not so great to eat. The best part of the entire meal was the complimentary fresh bread and whipped butter that was served when we first sat down.

Excellent food and service!!! Inventive recipes and wonderful presentations. For a Michelin 1 star it is casual and inexpensive. You can entertain yourself with people watching if you are dining alone or have nothing to say to you dining partner. The fabulous food helps you forget how noisy it is.

Fantastic restaurant with very nice employees and excellent food. We had … Starter: different sausages Main: dutch wagyu beef for two Dessert: Pavlova with cacao and a cream of banana and brown rum and the«surprise» egg. All in one an incredible flavour experience! Also the bone marrow — it was my first time and just great. Of course it is expensive but you’ll get everything back.

First things first — make a reservation … We had to make a reservation for 2 persons on a late Monday night as well and when I got there., it was packed! So, now, once you ve successfully made the reservation and reached here — you are in for a treat! The food here is delicious — we tried the smoked salmon which came in a pizza box, the wagyu burger, the steak tartar and the halibut. All the dishes were delicious and the portions are quite small. The wine list is quite comprehensive and the service is good. The ambience is modern, casual with high ceilings — I would have preferred to sit outside– their outdoor seating is lovely but it was cold n windy. Regardless, we had a good time and so will you as long as you keep an eye on your cha-ching cheque(you can end you taking quite a bill with the tapas style small portion dishes). I’m definitely going back here summer time to enjoy the patio seating.

We were in Amsterdam on a family trip with some family living in Holland and my mom accompanying us. We made reservations at Ron for Mother’s Day. Upon arrival at the restaurant we were greeted warmly and escorted to our table. There were balloons and bouquets of tulips at the seats for the moms — a very thoughtful touch! There is a fantastic selection of cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages and wines by the glass or bottle. Service was attentive and friendly without overdoing it. The food!!! My gluten-free needs were met easily — gluten free bread was provided and the cultured butter with nuts & bacon along with spicy/sweet/sour gherkins the perfect accompaniment. My boyfriend and I shared the scallop tartar with foam of potato & Beemster cheese with hibiscus powder, pan-fried halibut with salsify, Gruyère, & butter vinegar sauce, & the cauliflower braised in butter with black pudding & Pierre Robert cheese. The presentation of the food was so beautiful it was a thing of art. The flavours and textures melted together as though they were made to be matched. The plates are small but very rich so we left feeling satisfied but not too full. One of my top 10 meals, for sure!

Excellent! It was recommended by someone and we were lucky to have a table by just walked in. We ordered two small dishes and one steak. It turned out to be too much for two! We were shocked when the waiter showed the raw beef in front of us, it was a huge piece! Recommend to order several small dishes only if you are going in two persons. Or ask friends to join and enjoy the steak together! We felt shamed at last because we couldn’t finish all of them. PS: i like the way they make menu like a piece of newspaper and decorations much!

Ron Gastrobar is a trending place by Ron Blaauw, a former 2 Michelin star chef, who opened his new place, based on a less formal bistro concept with fixed prices almost for all the dishes. I loved our experience. I’m not a great eater, so i really enjoyed the small portions and a freedom to order as much as you want. One. Two. Three. Seven different plates if you’d like. Be aware though, the prices are not aggressive, but most of the savoury dishes go for 15 and desserts for 9, and some portions are not that big. I had a Langoustine with leak and pumpkin and chorizo cream(there’s even a video of this dish here) and the Surprise Egg dessert. They both were really good, if i have to criticise then the Langoustine’s sauce was a touch salty and the Egg was a touch too sweet. BUT … read more here

Oh Ron Blauw — Your hotdog left me less than breathless. I wasn’t sure I could ever get past the disappointment of my ‘first time’ with you but the appearance of a Groupon in my inbox made giving you a second chance more palatable. Unlike many Groupon experiences, we rocked up to Ron’s classy establishment able to choose ANY3 small plate options — there was no ‘special’ Groupon menu where your choices are completely limited. This scores major bonus points from me, as I think the whole point of Groupon is to showcase your business in its entirety, not showcase one particular item which you deemed Groupon-worthy(read: cheap & easy). The menu is very seafood heavy — as a person who grew up landlocked, I’m more of a veggie/meat eater. I first had a warm potato salad which was nice but not worth the 10 or 15 Euros it would have been, sans the Groupon. However, the pleasantly BONELESS ribs were amazing! The quality of the meat was evident and the taste was perfectly balanced — there was a reason there was no hesitation from the waiter when I asked him to suggest a meat dish! The grand finale was Ron’s «Surprise Egg.» This was a delightfully presented(you guessed it) white chocolate egg, filled with a champagne mousse and a peach jelly. Along side this came a super tart lime sorbet which, to my surprise, complimented it perfectly. I see from other reviewers that they didn’t fare so well with the ‘surprise egg’ but it seems that Ron has learned from his mistakes. The wine was good, the service was just ok. We did have to ferociously flag down waiters for wine refills and had to walk up to the bar to get our cheque paid, which I wouldn’t expect to have to do in a place like this. I might go here again for a special occasion but this is more a result of the menu choices, rather than the quality of the food. I think seafood eaters would get more out of this restaurant than us land lovers. If I could give 3.5, I would but it’s got to be a 3 stars for now.

I had lunch here a few months ago. Although the atmosphere in the bar area is good– high ceilings, lots of light, the service and food do not compare with the other Michelin star restaurants I have eaten at. Service was only okay-ish. Dishes were not overly creative or excellent(although affordable). I have to agree with another reviewer about the weird dessert with popcorn garnish — very strange and not so good. I would not return.

Visited Ron’s Gastrobar about 12 times in the past year and in addition the consistency, the outstanding quality of dishes and ingredients, it is refreshing to dine in a restaurant where the staff is enthusiastic, knowledgable and show that they want to be there. The restaurant is all about the customer and quality. The formula works and the vision of mr. Blaauw are in my opinion perfectly executed and maintained. A friendly environment, beautiful dishes, amazing flavour in every bite, gorgeous wines. An experience I certainly can’t get enough of. Looking forward to my next visits.
