NH Doelen

Habe in diesem Hotel 2 Übernachtungen gebucht von Freitag bis Sonntag. Es ist ein Einzelzimmer, das aber wirklich sehr sehr klein ist. Die Matratze war sehr weich. Das Badezimmer ist neuerrn Datums, sehr schön, hat aber keine Heizung so dass es sehr kalt ist. Vor allem fußkalt. Die Fenster in meinem Zimmer lassen sich nicht richtig schließen, das heißt, es zieht permanent so stark, dass der Wind die Gardinen bewegt. Ich habe in der Nacht sehr gefroren.
Das ganze Hotel wirkt ziemlich abgerockt und ranzig. Es hätte schon bestimmt vor 10 bis 15 Jahren komplett renoviert werden müssen. Hinter dem Bett lag dick der Dreck, siehe Foto. Die Decke im Badezimmer hatte Wasserschäden, die nicht von gestern waren. Alles sehr unsauber. Das Gebäude ist recht hellhörig und man bekommt viele Geräusche mit. Auch von draußen schallt es die ganze Nacht hoch. Kneipen und Strassenlärm.
Ich kann dieses Hotel nicht weiterempfehlen, obwohl die Lage einzigartig ist. Man hat einen schönen Blick auf die Amstel und es ist sehr zentral gelegen.

Schlechtes Hotel zu schlechten Preisen. Die Zimmer sind Steinalt und mehr als Renovierungsbedürftig. Die «guten» Zimmer zur Gracht raus sind genau so schrabbelig, wie die zur Straße, haben aber auch noch den «Bonus» das es Abends extrem laut ist durch die angrenzende Kneipe. Für 160 € die Nacht ein Witz — never again!

I liked the hotel, it’s old, one small elevator and it broke on the day I had to check out. The breakfast room was nice because you could sit there eat and watch the People on their bikes or canal boats go by. You are cold to almost everything. I walked everywhere. The only bad part was the university next door. They party to early morning so you might get woken up.

For a start I have a few gripes about some reviews on tripadvisor/​qype/​yelp about the TVs and WiFi at this hotel. TV, yeh they are old but I was in Amsterdam and did I want to sit around watching TV when there was so much to see and do. As for WiFi, as far as I was concerned it was more than adequate. If you want better reception go to a more modern hotel. OK, getting off my soapbox.
We arrived at about 10.30 am and knew that the room would not be ready until 3.00 pm. The reception desk took in our case so we wouldn’t waste a day site seeing. My first impressions were of a grace and style of a rare old hotel. Beautiful décor and extremely friendly, yet professional, reception staff.
Arriving later we were given our room on the 4^th floor with a wonderful canal view.
The bed was extremely comfortable and the room large enough for we two. Yes, the rooms could do with a little make over but, as I have said, it is an old hotel. Towels were changed, unnecessarily, every day. Bathroom could do with a spring clean as there was some mould between the tiles, no problem. Also, only 2 of each, tea and coffee, sachets but I am sure that would have been rectified if I had asked.
Perfect city centre position with only minutes to walk to get to anywhere. Overall a nice hotel.

Awesome location, but not much else.
The hotel could use some renovations, as things are quite old looking and a bit run down. The toilets have the inspection shelf, which I guess could be a plus for some, but it’s a big minus for me. The lights in the bathroom also flickered, which made me feel like I was stuck in some psycho movie and was going to get stabbed or else go crazy and stab someone.
Also, the guy who checked us in was super surly. And we asked him to make a reservation at a restaurant, and he totally didn’t even bother calling the restaurant and just told us that they didn’t take reservations when I know for a fact that the restaurant did take reservations. Not cool.

This place creeks with history and it is an amazing looking hotel from the outside. Just a real Amsterdam landmark. Now, as is true in all of Amsterdam, hotels are expensive, but I stayed here one night and the staff were wonderful. I arrived early in the morning and I was given a room with a view of the canal on the fourth floor at 8 am. Many hotels in busy tourist sections won’t let you check in like this so I was happy. Now I have been to Europe many times so when my room had two single beds I was expecting something like this. In fact, I bet my original booking was for a laundry room sized room. At any rate, my views were amazing, and the bath was spacious and modern. The hotel interior was dated to be sure, and as is common for many European hotels under say $ 300 Euros a night, there was an old-​room feel to the place. Now, this does not mean the room was not clean. Everything was in working order and clean. I was happy with my room, but I know what to expect.
Now, this place has real history. Rembrandt painted some of his work from the 3^rd floor, and the celebrities who stayed here run the gamut from Queen Victoria, to Austrian Empress Sissi, to the Beatles. I love old places like this. The breakfast buffet is no bargain at 20 Euros but the view from the café right on the river is amazing so I went and did it.
Helpful staff, great location, rich in history, and central to everything without feeling like you are in a tourist dive (and there are a lot of them) in Amsterdam.

Fabulous location. The HN Doelen is central to everything. You are a 5 minute walk from Rembrandt Square where all the restaurants and pubs are, the Leidsestraat shopping district and De Wallen (Red Light District). It’s about a 15 minute walk (5 minute cab ride) to the Amsterdam Central Station. The Doelen is situated right on the banks of one of Amsterdam’s many canals, and next to my all-​time favorite Coffee shop — The Coffee Company, where I spent many mornings unwinding and watching the boats float by.
Highlights:
— Again, incredible location — huge plus
— Free continental breakfast buffet in the lobby dining area every morning
— Free wi-​fi for an hour per day, available only in the lobby
— The staff is friendly and helpful, especially with helping you find your way around town
What to watch out for:
— The standard sized rooms are a decent size — around 200 sq ft if you count the bathroom. Thankfully, the bathroom is a bit more spacious.
— There was a bit of a bug problem. Teeny flies that resembled fruit flies buzzed around in the corners of the room. They kept mostly to the ceiling, and disappeared on the second day. So you may or may not have this experience.
— One elevator, so be prepared to take the stairs if you’re in a rush
— No air conditioning. Due to the constant humidity, you’ll probably want to leave your window open.
Leaving your window open can cause problems in itself, though. For instance, people party in Amsterdam until 5am. And they party LOUD. It doesn’t help that the Doelen is across the street from the University of Amsterdam.
Darn you, college kids! *shakes fist in air vigorously*
Honestly, it was probably my own fault for going to bed before midnight. Amsterdam is not the place to do that.
But seriously, it’s a great hotel — especially for the price. If you’re looking to be pampered at the Four Seasons, you won’t find it in Amsterdam. The Doelen is pretty great. You can get up each morning and get free breakfast (if you’e awake early enough), and everything is literally at your doorstep. I would definitely stay here again.
