I amsterdam Letters

Just in case you visited tooooo many coffee shops in the city and forgot what city you were roaming around, the larger than life letters that spell out IAMSTERDAM will definitely let you now that you are where you are! It’s playful and kinda cool, definitely stands out so that you can prove to your friends that you were there. Being in Amsterdam in February definitely eliminates having to share the photo op!

These iconic letters are a must do for any tourist in Amsterdam. There’s actually three sets of letters in Amsterdam: the set that everybody goes to behind the Rijksmuseum, in front of Schipol Airport, and the third set travels across the city.
Good luck trying to find the letters empty, because even in inclement weather they’re crawling with tourists (literally). I heard that early in the morning is the time to visit them for the best photo ops.

It’s near impossible (JK, it is* impossible) to get a selfie with the iconic I amsterdam letters unless you arrive here in the wee morning. I came around noon time and it was crowded with people. You basically have to take turns with other tourists in order to get to the letter you want a picture with. You can also climb the letters and snap away. You also won’t be alone in the picture as there are tons of people next to you posing in front of their own favorite letter. There are also the mindless rude ones who just sit by the letters and won’t move for you and your mini photo sesh (especially next to the letter I and a as there is a huge sitting gap for the assholes). Nonetheless, this place should be a must on the list when in Amsterdam.
I was also lucky enough to see and snap lots of pics of the Kaws Sculpture display as part of the Artzuid project during my visit at Museumplein. There was not much of a crowd around the sculptures situated in the middle of very shallow water so it was all in all a great picture taking opportunity with both the Kaws Sculpture and the I amsterdam sign right behind it.
Little note: Food here is expensive just like any other tourist attraction in any other city or country. You have to pay 50 cents. or was it 1 Euro? to use the restroom just like most of public restrooms in Europe.

Passage indispensable à chaque visite… aucun de mes séjour né s’est achevé sans avoir pris la petite photo devant les fameuses grandes lettres rouges et blanches «Iamsterdam».
Chacun y va se son selfie, de sa super pose «que personne n’a jamais pensé à pendre», etc, etc… super touristique, mais sympa !
Ici on est sur Museumplein, là où se trouvent beaucoup de musées: Van Gogh, Stedelijk, Rijksmuseum, etc; l’endroit peut donc être un point de rdv facile après s’être dispersés lors d’une visite de musée, plutôt pratique.
Juste à côté, il y a toujours une expo extérieure temporaire, en général assez fun, et si vous êtes fatigués, un grand espace vert pour faire une petite pause ;-)
Bref, passez-​y !

Crowded like usual, but definitely a worthy place to check out if you are ever in Amsterdam. You can apparently climb the letters and go wild and take a photo. It was really hard to take a photo of the letters because there was so many people, idk, maybe there is a better ideal time to come, but my friends and I came here on the last day, which was a weekday. Maybe the morning would be best, like 7am haha. The sign is in the park where you can just relax.

Man sollte den Platz an einem nicht so frequentierten Tag besuchen, da man sonst keine Chance hat ein Foto von den grossen I Amsterdam Buchstaben ohne Menschenmengen zu bekommen. Zwischen dem Van Gogh und dem Rijkmuseum sind diese aufgestellt und ein schönes Fotomotiv. Wenn man mag, kann man sogar draufklettern.

Great area to people watch, but if you want that picture of the giant iconic letters just by your own self, you are doomed to failure, unless it is raining, or super early in the am (like 3 am) or you are a celebrity and thus get special treatment!
Make sure you also turn your back to the letters and check out the sculpture of a giant mouse, reminiscent of Mickey and Minnie by British artist «KAWS» in the pond in front of the letters — I actually thought it was a Koons, because it reminded me of his puppy sculpture.

Don’t expect to get a photo of yourself alone with these letters. Crowded and people at climbing on top of the structure. There are two structures in the city.

My boyfriend pretty much rolled his eyes when I said I wanted to go see the iamsterdam letters, but you know what? We went anyway because hello! Giant letters! (I’m a designer, letters are my happy [nerdy] place)
It was packed with people, as we failed to go early in the day, but none the less, a bunch of touristy photos were indeed taken & the Amsterdam trip was complete.

It’s an icon of Amsterdam. Everyone has to get their picture taken with it. So many that it’s difficult to get a clear clean shot of either the letters, you in front of the letters or your friends in front of the letters. It’s one of those «I was here» places. You need a picture to prove it of course. There are actually two sets of these. This one is directly behind the Rijksmuseum. Early morning apparently is the only time the letters are not obscured by so many tourists. This is one of many photo-​ops in Amsterdam.

I really was excited to get a picture with this bad boy, but honestly, its extremely difficult with all the other people aiming to do the same thing. Is that the fault of the sign? No. Is it still kinda cool to stop by and see? Yeah, cause ya know what? How many times are you gonna get to go hang in amsterdam? For me, probably not many so it was a must do and easy on the way to the Van Gogh museum which is what I was eager for.

If you go to Amsterdam, you HAVE to get your photo taken with the Amsterdam letters. It is such a fun way to capture a souvenir of the city. It is the epicenter of the musuem center. I took a bus there. It is always full of people so don’t be bummed if you can’t get a photo solo! That is part of the experience.

Passage quasi obligé pour les touristes afin d’immortaliser sa visite à Amsterdam, le I amsterdam est une des grosses attractions de la ville. Pour le trouver il vous faudra marcher un peu sans vous perdre (un défi si vous n’avez pas le sens de l’orientation).
Le lieu est entouré de musés et d’une patinoire l’hiver et offre de belles occasions de faire des photos malgré le monde présent. Nous y sommes allées l’après-midi et beaucoup de touristes ont fait comme nous. Si vous voulez les lettres pour vous seul, pensez à y aller le matin, il paraît qu’il y a beaucoup moins de monde.

PS: try to go in the morning because afternoons are crowded with 75,000,000+ tourists doing the same thing.
BTW, great place to people watch if you have some time to kill.

Probably not for locals but we had to have our photo taken when we landed at the Schipol Airport.

I’m not really sure how to rate a bunch of letters. Kearning? Font size? Font type? Colors?
Everybody who has been to Amsterdam has taken a picture or two, selfies and what have you in front of this sign, behind the sign, next to the sign, or on top of the sign. It’s free, it’s conveniently located at Museumplein so, it’s not like you have to make a special hike/​trip just to get here. My hotel is half a mile away from here so getting here before everyone wakes up was not a problem. That’s when you want to be here to avoid photo bombers.
There’s a reflection pool in front of it, a station where you can charge your electronic devices that have a USB port and lots of space to sit and people watch. No muggers or pick pockets, bums or gypsies when I went. So, I guess, I had a good experience. Why not 5 stars? Because I don’t feel like it!

What’s so fascinating about letters? I think it makes for a very good picture, even though it’s simply just letters. But the letters have graffiti on them, so a bit further makes for a better shot than up close. There’s no hustle and bustle around this area except for people walking around and hanging about, you can just sit and relax especially early in the morning when there are less people. It’s like a park scene, people pass by, sit, enjoy food (which can be bought from a local museum shop or bring your own). It’s in an open plain, so the museums in the backdrop create it’s ambiance of being in the museum district. The center body of water makes for a nice scenery. Birds flocking around do also.

All tourists stop here and take photos! A LOT of photos! Rain or shine, you will never be able to monopolize this stretched-​out 10-​letter sign. You will always have strangers in your photos. But that’s part of the experience in Amsterdam. At least, it’s a friendly city and people are nice. So, keep smiling because you are in their pictures, too. There is another «I Amsterdam» sign at the Schiphol Airport but who wants to drag their luggage along while fighting for a photo op ;-) Museumplein is more scenic anyway. The sign is an icon now and of course I had to join the throng.

Had 2 do the «tourist thing» just so I can say I wuz in Amsterdam! We were on r way 2 the Van Gogh museum & happen 2 c this Amsterdam sign. It wuz 2 cute 4 me 2 pass this up! :)

It’s right in front of the Rijksmuseum, so you can’t miss them. You have to stop and take the iconic photo!

I had a 2 day layover in Amsterdam (which I actually signed up for) and absolutely loved the city.
The first thing on my to-​see list were the I AMsterdam letters!
In person they’re much more dirty than in the photos, and each letter has at least one person sitting, hanging, standing, planking on it at all times. Trying to get a picture with all the letter alone is near impossible.
As a tourist, I found my fellow tourists to be really annoying. People just leave their bikes parked in front of a letter, while they take pictures with other letter.
One experience you will get from seeing I AMsterdam is that you will hate human kind and want to blow everyone away just so you can take a DAMN PICTURE!
Ugh.

Conveniently located in museumplein, right by the Rijks and across from the Van Gogh museum and House of Bols, I enjoyed taking pictures of this piece. There will always be people here, so expect your photo to be tourist infested.
Overall, it’s a nice slogan /​motto for Amsterdam. Love it!
