Im Süden der Stadt liegt das lebhafte Viertel De Pijp. Dass das Viertel im 19. Jahrhundert noch außerhalb der Stadtgrenze lag und hauptsächlich aus Polder bestand, würde heute keiner mehr vermuten. Aus schlichter Wohnungsnot begann man hier in den 1920er Jahren Arbeiterwohnungen zu bauen heute leben 40.000 Amsterdamer aus aller Welt hier und machen De Pijp zum wahrscheinlich multikulturellsten Viertel der Welt. Die vielen bunten Bars und Cafés spiegeln die Vielfalt des Stadtteils wieder auch typisch holländische Pubs sind vertreten.
