Stopped here for afternoon coffee and to make our evening plans. This is a chic café in the city a few miles from the oldest part of the city(the red light district). Our server was super friendly and greeted us when we arrived. We sat down and ordered a pair of lattes, which were hot and tasty. There is free Internet and the café was filled with the sound of motown type tunes, which earned an A+ in my book. The entire look and feel of this café was perfect. We sat for a while, sipped our drinks, and plotted the rest of our evening. The server noticed what were doing, shared a few tips, and gave us a hard coated plastic map of the area that someone had left behind. If I make my way back to Amsterdam, I’d definitely include this as a redux. Love this place!

Café George is located in an upscale neighbourhood in the Museum Quarter of Amsterdam. It is a small intimate Café with a great wine list and great food. We had lunch there in August when the temperature was hot so we ate on the outside patio. It is frequented by locals who have style. They have a varied menu with pasta, salads, fresh fish and meat dishes. The Frits /Chips are delicious as well as the Dover Sole. We had such a great time we had lunch there the second day as well. Highly recommended.

Very quiet for a Saturday night. I at about 7:30 so perhaps it picks up later. Nice quaint location and off the beaten path. I enjoyed a view of the canal and bikers passing by. The food was just ok. Started with the Onion Soup and it was good. Nice piece of bread cheese in the middle but it was a little syrupy. Steak Frites as next and just mediocre. Good fries but not a great steak. Cooked to order though. For the price — solid option but overall I didn’t think the food was good enough

We had a lovely breakfast here. It is a pretty spot on the canal. Food is good. The juice is very fresh squeezed. The salmon benedict was good, but some potatoes or salad on the side would have been nice. We actually had very good and friendly service from a sweet long curly haired young man. Perhaps the friendliest we have had in Amsterdam(which I mention because of the other reviews here). So, this is good for a basic, relaxing meal.

I always have a good chuckle when I read reviews from tourists complaining about the poor service in Amsterdam and mentally add back stars to the ratings. Of course Café George is no exception to the rule. Even with a few people there, somehow the food is still exceptionally slow. While waiting I started to daydream that maybe when the food gets entered in the POS, a guy gets a notification at home, rolls out of bed, gets on his bike, buys ingredients and then makes his way to the restaurant. That said, with the lowest of expectations on timing, I can say I actually like this place! The interior is unique, dimly lit in the front with most of the natural light filtering through the greenhouse skylights in the back. It has a trendy New York — Parisian feel. It’s definitely a place where fashionistas come, but not as stuffy as the location by Vondelpark. To cut to the chase on food, I almost never stray from the Eggs Norwegian and a side of fries. It’s served on a brioche bun, and while a bit stiff, I like the juxtaposition with the rest so it’s not all super mushy. The French toast is a good add-on if you’re sharing — I always want a bit of sweet to balance the savory. The salad Niçoise with fresh seared tuna looks amazing if you’re looking for something healthier and heftier. All we ask now is if they can improve the speed and warmth of their service at all locations.

Feeling low on sodium? Got some time to spare? Go here! Not sure what’s happening to amsterdam’s favorite chain of New York style French bistros. The quality once was great, but as of recently not so much. Too bad.

I really wanted to like this place… the staff was very nice… the décor pleasant… but the food. it’s a ‘meh’. I had the steak frites. A lovely classic! Can’t go wrong there! — I thought… wrong. The steak looked like it had been chewed up before. my dinner date also gave it a «what is that?» glance. It was cooked how I wanted it but the quality of the meat is just the worst I’ve ever experienced at a restaurant. Tough, stringy, tendony, fatty — all at the same time, and once in a while a very strange after taste would come up to say hello. I literally had to eat it with the mayonaise to convince myself to swallow it. The frite and mayonaise were lovely though… unfortunately that wasn’t worth the total price. I might go back and give it another chance(though definitely not giving the steak another chance) because I really wanted to like this place!

Nice cozy frenchie café-restaurant on a rather quiet canal. In the evening the filtered light is beautiful, ambiance romantic and the whole experience makes you wish coming back. Food is good and simple, on the French side, wine list is good, prices average and service was very nice. Walked in without reservation and we were given a table without any remark or grimasse that you get in most restaurants if you pop-in, so thanks for the nice evening :)

Great old school bistro style restuarant. What you see is what you get at café George. Great staff and solid(maybe a little safe) menu in a lovely old school French setting. Enjoy!

Wow! I just celebrated my 70th birthday here tonight at Café George in Amsterdam. The evening was absolutely flawless. The food was superb, and the service was excellent. The décor of the restaurant is trendy and hip and makes you feel like you are in a swank French bistro on the Left Bank in Paris. Everyone speaks English(if you do). The blackened tuna is incredible, as is the lamb and beef Bourguignon. The skinny little French fries are delicious with mayonnaise, as the Dutch eat them. The dessert of Crêpe Suzette is awesome. I can barely remember when I’ve had such a perfect evening. And the staff was so pleasant and helpful– very caring, and quite accessible. I highly recommend this restaurant. It’s a very romantic place– perfect lighting– you can still read the menu, but it feels warm and cozy. We really had just a great meal and a great time. The couple next to us from New Zealand felt the same way about their meal and their service. It was nearly a magical night for us :-) By the way– almost embarrassed to mention about such a fine restaurant– but, yes, there is free Wi-Fi, which we definitely made use of.

Let me just start by saying that, while traveling Europe, my husband and I have noticed that subpar service is to be expected. That is, in comparison with the attention we are used to getting in America. It seems to be accepted – and definitely something we have come to expect. That said, it is impossible not to rate this place based almost entirely on the customer service – or lack there of, I should say. We stumbled across this place while in desperate need of something charming and not touristy and were initially very pleased with our find! The atmosphere is chic and comfortable and it had a lot of customers – always a good sign! We were greeted by the bartender who was also our«server» who seated us and got us drinks. It was a while before we saw him again. We ordered our food. And waited. And waited. And waited. We had to grab our server and ask about the hold up – he never once offered any reasoning for the delay. Nor did he stop to check in on us or offer to get us more beverages while we waited. This was while everyone around us was getting their food. The food came. It was underwhelming at best. Nothing to wait almost forty minutes for. The only condolence I have in wasting this hour of my life is that Viktor & Rolf – the avant-garde darlings of Amsterdam’s bustling fashion scene – were sitting next to us! Alas, they too received the same awful service.

I’ve been there many times, and the food is good and they have good wine, beers and drinks. The only problem is the waiting time, it can take a long time if it’s busy, ones I waited more than an hour for my dish. If you have the time, go there!

I’ve been to all three Amsterdam locations of café George and still can’t figure out my favourite. I enjoy the interior design of all the locations, but the one on Princegracht seems to be the most cozy. I’m always a sucker for French brasserie meets New York kind of places, so you might understand my love for George. As for the food, it’s OK, nothing really special. Onion soup is mediocre, seemed like they added tomato paste inside, never really understood that. Club sandwich is good, but hey, it’s just a sandwich. Nicoise with fresh tuna is tasty and the portion is big. Vitello Tonnato was a huge disappointment — i always like bald seasoning and hate the lack of sauce, but my veal was drowning in super salty tuna sauce. A highlight of the dishes for me were Eggs Norwegian(benedict but with salmon). Service in George depends on the time of the day. It’s really good and attentive in the morning and afternoon, closer to the evening waiters tend to be more forgetful and hard to spot. Overall George is a nice place, i will come for more.

The food was excellent and loved the décor as well as the waitstaff! We went to Café George for dinner on the last day of our stay in Amsterdam and we were happy we came to this restaurant.

We wanted to go for brunch today and because both locations of some popular english tearoom had no space left went to Café George. I was happy about that alternative because it looks so nice from outside and I had it on my list. But big mistake, what a disappointment! After we were seated and got the menu«our» waitress forgot us and we had to ask when we were ready to order. In the menu there’s an option«Eggs any style» so asked for fried egg. The new waitress replied: what do you mean? I repeated my order because I thought she didn’t understand me the first time. She replied again: but how do you mean that? I mentioned the option in the menu and tried it with«sunny side up»? The waitress asked back: so you just want normal eggs? I confirmed and asked for toast with them. When the dishes arrived of course my plate came without toast and I had to wait 10 more minutes. Moreover, the eggs swam in a lake of butter, yummy… And the eggs benedict that my friends had ordered didn’t look appetizing at all. Thanks to their great location close to the Leidseplein they will always get enough customers so they don’t have to care about the service. And when we got the check I wasn’t surprised that the food is totally overpriced.

Wonderful décor, and stunning food. Had t tuna steak and crème brûlée. My eating partner thought this was one of the best she had ever ate. Also had a range of six different gin and tonics. Service was a bit slow but perhaps that goes with the Parisian ambiance. Paradise only a short distance from tourist hell on leidseplein.

I braved the big October wind storm to come here with my sister for my last supper in Amsterdam. She’d been there before with friends and had a hankering for moules frites. The restaurant didn’t disappoint. The mussels were excellent — big, fresh, and well-prepared and generous in portion. The fries were crisp and salty. It went down very well with the Wiekse white beer they had on tap. Best of all, the service was prompt and smiley. The only two gripes I have: — 3 euros for bread and butter, really? Yes it’s good bread and good butter, but given this place isn’t exactly cheap, this seems a bit petty — the fries are brought in one bowl for the table so you’ve got to move quick to make sure you get your share Overall, though, it was a great meal. I’d be back.

After walking around for an hour looking for a place to eat and being turned down by 3 restaurants I had on my list(due to not having made a prior reservation on a Sunday night), I ended up at Café George. It has a nice open feel, and a bit off the beaten path of the super touristy cafes. This is more of a bistro. I had a steak tartar which comes with frites and salad and was pretty good. Not the best ever but well priced for what I got. I also had a crêpe suzette for desert and that was delicious but a bit small. Good service, good food, good all around.

Publikum sehr angenehm, viele junge Kreative.
