This place is GARBAGE! The employees are criminals.
If you rent a car in Cancun from the airport, more than likely your at their mercy. You just flew in, your tired, its hot, etc… they feed of that and bill you like crazy. Potentially could ruin the start of your vacation with all the nonsense.
Recommendation: Have a shuttle get you to a hotel. Once situated, have the concierge make arrangements for a car rental. it will be a smoother transaction.

I reserved a car online but I didn’t reserved the insurance which was more expensive at the office. So do everything online. Your credit card should have a limit of at least $ 3.000 if you want the cheapest insurance, if not you will have to pick a better/​more expensive insurance. The car they gave us didn’t have power steering. And the band from the terminal to the car rental last 20 min to pick us up. Over all the car rental was more or less ok. Becarfull full with VIDALTA, someone is gonna offer you something at the car rental!
They offer us a breakfast and a discount on the car I rent if I visit their hotel. I spent more than 3 hours, it wasn’t a hotel it was a private club ($ 70k membership) plus $ 1.000 per week you stay there! After a a very aggressive way to sales it, 5 different persons they offered us for only $ 2.000 and $ 99 per week in an studio in the complex! That last person didn’t even respond to us when we said we didn’t want it. After all that they only give us some of the discount promised. Itzel was the one that lie to us at the car rental. I lost the whole day going there 1 hour from Tulum 3 hours there plus 1 hours to Tulum back! It was full of people like us! Only a few old people as a clients. You decide if you wanna lose a day for some $$$, I regret! Love Mexico, it’s a paradise!

Because I cannot leave less, what a shit-​show, I have no alternative to guide you to, but I’ve bought cars and taken flights in less time than it took to simply rent a car from these imbeciles

I saw all the warning signs online– from reviews and forums. But tourists don’t have a lot of choices in cancun when it comes to car rental… SO i thought we would be okay, if we are smart about it/​know their tricks and avoid their scams.
WELL, let me just tell you that they are PURE EVIL. You can’t really prepare for their ridiculous scams. They THRIVE on ripping you off; it’s their job. They will make up stuff, don’t explain things to you, take their sweet time, ignore you, and you will probably miss your flight because you will have been there for 3 hours.
Avoid at all costs.

Wir haben über Car Del Mar ein Auto für 435 € gebucht in Deutschland. Vor Ort bei Thrifty Cancun wurden wir erpresst eine Zusatzversicherung abzuschließen statt wie vereinbart 100.000 $ Peso, für nun 4 Mio Peso, sonst hätten wir den Mietwagen nicht bekommen, angeblich reiche der Schutz nicht aus. Wieso bietet man aber solche Summen dann an? Da Zusatzkosten von 219 € entstanden sind, finden wir sehr unseriös. Kostensteigerung von 50%! NIE WIEDER!

WORST PLACE TO RENT A CAR is from THRIFTY AT CANCUN AIRPORT!
Stay away!!! My family flies into Cancun airport 4 – 6 times a year, last week I rented from Thirfty, WORST CAR RENTING EXPERIENCE EVER… Bait and Switch… TRULY AWFUL!!! The women was so rude and nasty tried to make me to pay another 1,300 Dollars yes thats Dollars not Pesos… my husband came in later in the week (as a surprise) rented from Alamo got everything on line direct from Almo (not travel sites) it was a seamless process for him but he did it direct with Almo online and pre purchased everything online, so when they tried to tell him he need more he told them to look at what he had prepaid… and she said «oh, I guess you are completely covered» I thought I had done that with Thrifty, IT WAS A SCAM… Truly stay away!

«Theft-​y» knows you are tourists and will try to rob you. If I could put negative stars, then I would. I understand that reviewing an establishment responsibly is only fair, but this place was designed to rob you.
Let me just give the highlights since reading long Unilocal reviews can be tedious:
1) charge you way more for insurance coverage under 3 different types of coverage. The first being the least expensive and the Mexican minimum, but makes you put a $ 3000 deposit. Second, being $ 300+ (the moderate price) and putting $ 1500 deposit. 3^rd, being $ 400+ (highest payout) and putting $ 300 deposit.
2) People in Mexico will hit and damage your car. The insurance is needed. It almost seems like extortion. We had our hotel «concierge» move our car throughout the trip. Later when we returned the car we noticed a scratched up front bumper, which we had to pay for… ended up being $ 70, but principles matter.
3) This is the thing that upset me the most and they do this to everyone… they look under your car and say something is misplaced assuming you don’t know anything about cars. This happened to at least 5 customers that I saw while at «Theft-​y»
Full explanation:
We arrived to cancun excited for our vacation. We planned on driving to Tulum because it would save us money on cab fees. We had booked the car earlier when we made travel plans. The lady at the thrifty counter was great and super informative. She helped us get onto a shuttle to get to the rental area, but I can’t help but feel in retrospect she was buttering us up to be eaten.
Upon arriving there we had to wait (that’s ok… it happens). Then we get this pitch about the drivers insurance and how the Mexican government requires a certain type of insurance coverage. The guy at the counter spoke English well and seemed nice, but then we get these rates (in dollars not Mexican pesos):
1) pay $ 200+ for theft and complete damage to the car, but have to put a $ 3000+ deposit on your card.
2) pay $ 300+ for theft and some upgraded form of coverage and put only…$ 1500 deposit on your card.
3) pay $ 400 – 450 for complete coverage and put only $ 300 deposit on your card.
— Retrospective thoughts: the guy doesn’t have this on any formal paper, but writes it all out in front of you on a scrap piece of paper… SHADY!
Then, the guy tells us that when we return to the states we’ll have to get the deposit back with the paperwork we receive from them. That seemed shady to me, but at that time I didn’t have any reason to doubt him (fast forward, but my bank never even put up the charge so luckily this wasn’t an issue).
They tell us to inspect the car and we do. We walk around and the guy there points out a dent on our rear bumper and writes it down. Then he points out underneath the car and says nothing is wrong.
Right as we are about to leave a lady comes up to our window and says did you look at the bottom of your car? I said a little bit, but not majorly. She tells us to film the bottom and/​or take pictures because they were getting scammed because there were scratches underneath the car that they were going to be charged for. I got out of the car and filmed under the car, around the car, in the car, and every surface of the vehicle that I could. We go on our trip and return.
They inspect the car. They point out a scratch on our front bumper. I agree that there is one there that wasn’t there before. I assume one of our hotel staff must have hit something or a small hit and run, but regardless that wasn’t there before we left and I owned up to it. Then the guy gets on his back and looks underneath the car. He calls over a second guy and gets a second opinion and the guy tells him in spanish that there is damage underneath the car (all of this is Spanish, but what they didn’t know is that I secretly speak Spanish). I respond and get on my back and ask where is the damage. They never point it out and say generally there is damage. At this point I think of the nice women that helped us before we left. They bring us inside to sum up the damages. I ask them what that the damage is and I show them my video. They are busted at this point. They say there isn’t damages, but clearly they wanted to charge me for damages considering they wrote it on the paper (picture will be uploaded). I confront the guy (will also upload pic) that wrote it and ask him in Spanish why he wrote it if there is no damage. He proceeds to run away and doesn’t inspect cars for the rest of the time we are there. He gets into a car later and leaves the premises with a bunch of other people. They tell me there is no damage and charge me for the bumper scratch. Literally, saw this happening to 5 families during my duration there.
We ended up missing out flight because of the disputes. Another $ 200 in the hole.
Never again Mexico, and most definitely never again Theft-​y.

I’ve rented from the Thrifty Cancun airport location several times, and have a cautiously positive opinion. In Mexico I simply assume all tourist businesses are trying to rip you off, so anything short of complete fraud is an above-​average experience.
1) Pricing — decent, with planning. Each time, I’ve gotten an internet quote beforehand, with a dirt cheap rate of around $ 2/​day. As everyone quickly discovers, the rental car racket in Mexico is leaving out the required Mexican liability insurance from the internet quote, and adding it extra at the counter. AFAIK, the legally required liability is known as «PLI», while the extra (optional) insurance is known as SLE («supplemental»). At Thrifty, they say that PLI is included in your internet quote (and is confirmed by your quote’s fine print), but that SLE is ALSO required, at an extra $ 16.99/day.
Why not just call it PAI, and say it costs $ 16.99? Probably cause Thrifty corporate requires its franchisees to include mandated insurance in its base quote, and this place needs some way to advertise low rates on the web AND make money.
They let you decline collision, so you can use your credit card’s coverage if there’s any physical damage. Good.
With the base quote, required bullshit SLE insurance, taxes, and random fees, rentals have come out to at or slightly under $ 30/​day for a small car like the Nissan Tiida. Not bad. The SLE that’s tacked on is priced in USD and then converted to pesos, so the strengthening US dollar doesn’t help.
A customer next to me who arrived without a quote was given an estimate of $ 90/​day for the same car, so make sure you get that webquote. Or, get one at the airport arrivals hall rental counter. You’ll end up paying about the same.
2) Service — Slow. Prepare to wait up to 60 – 90 minutes for a car if there’s people in front of you in line when picking up the car, and around 30 min at drop-​off. In the states, there are barcode scanners, multiple lanes, express kiosks, etc. There is none of that here.
A shuttle takes you to the office from the arrivals hall, and to the terminal after dropoff. It’s pretty quick, and runs every few minutes.
3) Vehicle quality — Never any problems. Their fleet got a refresh this year, so most of the cars are brand new. The latest rental I had had 800 km on it.
4) Misc — One time, the car was brought back with a small but noticeable scratch in the clear coat, half the length of the bumper, from a car that tried to park too close. The dropoff attendant noted this in the report. Remarkably, the checkout clerk took a look too, but didn’t take the opportunity to rip me off — no extra charges.

As many other Unilocaler’s have noted Dollar/​Thrifty is a «bait and switch» shop. You’ll be quoted an estimated amount on the Dollar website (approximately 5 dollars a day) then when you arrive you are told insurance is mandatory and that outside insurance is not accepted #shady. As a result, the price you pay will more likely be 6 times more than what you are quoted. So budget appropriately or opt to take a taxi (based on your destination).

Pig with lipstick! I was quoted in writing 59.00 for a week yes I thought it was cheap but never been to mexico before I had them send a quote in writing! Well yep 569.00 was what they wanted to charge. Same Deal out pops a timeshare guy with his cape!
Telling me he would give us $ 100.00 off to see a timeshare I do not think so! Back to the airport only to have to pay $ 150.00 to take us to tulum called thrifty when I got home apparently these are satillite stores and they do not control there prices. So why get a quote just open your wallet and let them reach inn and take what they want will never use Thriftys again ever!

This place is such a scam, BEWARE!!!

I have vacationed in this area for 6 years in a row… never needed a rental car since we always stayed in Playa del Carmen and used taxis. We stayed in Soliman Bay this time and needed a car since it is 80 minutes from the airport. Booth in airport is very disorganized to get on the van that takes you to Dollar/​thrifty rental place. Once you’re there, you are told you must buy insurance or put a $ 600 deposit on your credit card. MAUREEN aka Cruella, says they will reduce the price IF you attend a time share session. We did not want to get roped into a day of bad car salesmen antics, so politely said no. She got mad and told the agent to make us pay $ 418 for a small car for 6 days. YES! $ 418 for 6 days!!!
My suggestion: call the place you are staying and ask for a reputable company. If we had the luxury of time, we would have left, but we needed to meet the iwners of the house we were staying at to get our keys.
If you rent a car, be sure to go over every dent and scratch OR THEY WILL TRY TO CHARGE YOU FOR THEM.
We had a great vacation, but felt duped.

These people are scammers. First, they could not locate my reservation so we agreed upon a price in dollars. What they don’t tell you is that they bill in pesos and name their own inflated exchange rate. The car they gave me had visible damage to the lower rear quarter panel which I pointed out and the agent then indicated on the form. Upon return they tried to pin me with damage that was actually dirt that I rubbed off. The only thing left was a mark on the bumper the size of a nail head, which happened to have been there already. Next they turned their attention to the quarter panel and they were just about to start on that when I took out the picture I had taken on my I phone at the time of the rental showing the damage. Throw incompetency on top of the whole mess as the driver of the van dropped me at the wrong terminal causing an $ 18 cab fare or a missed flight. Stay away from Thrifty in Cancun.

Car rental in Mexico is a damn SHAM. Not just for Thrifty but for ALL OF THEM. So LISTEN CLOSELY AND LISTEN WELL.
Online, the cars are dirt cheap. 6 – 10 BUCKS a day. not bad, right? WRONG. See, this is how they lure you in. They make you think it is going to be so cheap.
Then, since you cannot use your car insurance over here, you have to buy the car rental’s insurance. I understand that, but these mammajammas had jacked the insurance fees the frak up. You can opt in for liability, but they will scare the living be-​jeesus out of you into purchasing the full-​coverage insurance, which is like 30 – 40 bucks extra a day, PLUS some other fees here and there.
Online, I purchased the car rental for three days WITH insurance. I figured since we need the insurance anyway, I may as well purchase it. I was pleasantly surprised to see when my total came at $ 57 WITH the insurance. I shouldve known it was too good to be true. See, at the time, i didnt know how much they charge for insurance on site, so I figured this was normal. HOWEVER, when we came, I was told that the insurance I bought online was a third party insurance and that they do not honor anyone else’s insurance — ONLY THEIRS. To make it short, at the end of everything, they wanted $ 200 from us. My bill went from $ 57 to $ 200 — WHAT THE HELL? At the same time, there were so many people out there that were in the same boat as I am. But in the end, there is nothing you can do. They dont tell you on their website about this, and I think that is shady because they know that once you are there, in frakking Mexico, you have no choice but to pay for it. The family next to me had to pay $ 500 when they were expecting to only pay $ 100. The poor Chinese tourists that rented a van was in a shock of their lives when they were being charged for hundreds of dollars over than they were expecting. Dont you think this is a dirty tactic? Think about it. This practice should become illegal. They should put it on their website that booking online, car insurance inside the company is NOT OPTIONAL. People go to vacation with a set of money they are willing to spend. The family who ended up having to pay for $ 500 was greatly distraught. I mean, that is an extrea $ 400 they were not ready to pay! I dont see how the workers here can sleep at night. And oh, there were like fifty workers in this joint, but things were done so slowly. No organization, it was hot, no water for the customers … JUST RIDICULOUS.
Anyways, we were ready to walk off due to this. Hubby went back inside to understand the situation better, and somehow, our full coverage and rental car fee went down from $ 200 to $ 135. SOMEHOW these prices are negotiable. I DONT UNDERSTAND!!!
I am so furious with this car rental company, and based on other people’s experience, it seems like this is something ALL CAR RENTAL COMPANIES IN CANCUN do! SO BEWARE.
We were going to go to the bahamas, but figured it would be cheaper to go to Cancun, but boy were we wrong. Think twice before coming out here because people here are itching to get money from tourists.
