SS2 Yau Char Kwai stall

To be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of yau char kwai. But if I had to pick the best, it would definitely be this one. This stall has been selling yau char kuai even before I was born. It is run by a husband and wife duo which coincidentally happened to be my primary mates parents.
The yau char kuai here is top notch– crispy and crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. They also make fried buns here with different fillings. My favorite is the red bean filled fried buns. The best thing about this stall is the quality of the snacks prepared. The oil they use is always clear and not black like some sellers who like to reuse their oil.
Usually, there won’t be a queue but be prepared to wait because there will already be ordered before yours which is taken down. Customers would usually go to the kopitiam nearby to have a drink while waiting for their orders. The snacks here are not only delicious but affordable too!

Anyone who are familiar or stays near to SS2 area would be familiar with this Yau Char Kwai stall 2 doors down of Ho Ho Sek. The stall is operate by a couple and their son, and they have been selling Yau Char Kwai at the same spot for years. My family has been buying Yau Char Kwai from them for as long as I can remember.
There used to be long queue at the stall, but you hardly see that anymore. Why so? Is it because the standard had dropped? NO! They still fried the Yau Char Kwai non-​stop every day, the Yau Char Kwai still crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. So, why the queue is no more there? That’s because the owner will write down the customers’ orders, and the customers will go have a meal nearby or do their grocery shopping and only collect the food after a short while. Don’t be fool by the fried stuff displayed at the stall, because most of the time those have been reserved by some other customers.
Apart from Yau Chai Kwai, I like their fried red bean buns too. Some might complain the bun is lacking in red bean paste, but it’s just nice for me because I don’t fancy red bean. They have currypuff and fried bun with glutinous rice too. I have yet to try the currypuff, but the ones with glutinous rice is not too bad too.

Locals living around the SS2 or PJ vicinity will be familiar growing up with this Yau Char Kwai stall located just a few doors down Restoran Ho Ho Sek. There is no name to this stall as it occupies a few parking bays yet its legendary yau char kwai is enough to warrant a long queue every time I pay it a visit.
I had actually stumbled upon this stall while heading for lunch at Restoran Ho Ho Sek and the long queue together with the smell of freshly fried yau char kwai intrigued me. Part of the appeal is the freshness you get as the man expertly kneads and stretches the dough before passing it on to his wife to deep fry it in a wok of hot oil until it turns a perfect golden brown. The result? A crispy outer shell that is soft and fluffy on the inside. Such a simple snack yet it requires a certain amount of skill to achieve the right texture to it.
It is no wonder there is always a queue at this stall as people are patient enough to wait just to get their hands on the yau char kwai. There are no ready batches made beforehand as everything is fried on the spot and that’s as fresh as it gets. The stall also sells other snacks such as currypuffs packed with potatoes and aromatic curry leaves, fried red bean buns and fried bun with glutinous rice. Eat it while its hot and wash it down with a bowl of warm soya milk. Be prepared to wait in line as good things come to those who wait.
