I grew up eating Teohew style porridge but I hardly come across these when I came to PJ. Most of the porridge I get from here are Cantonese style and I started missing the side dishes that paired so perfectly with the Teochew Porridge. Just in case you are not too sure, Teochew porridge are more watery compared to the starchy Cantonese-style porridge. It will usually come with some side dishes such as braised peanuts, chicken leg, salted vegetable, salted eggs and many more. Hong Lim Teochew Porridge at SS2 serve some pretty decent Teochew porridge, and they have a wide varieties of side dishes for you to choose from. If you are looking to have Teochew porridge then you should check on the ones at Hong Lim. The place is usually crowded during dinner time and the dishes sold out pretty fast.

This is one of my favourite places for a hearty yet reasonably priced meal in SS2. The restaurant caught fire a while back and I was quite sad to see it closed for a while. It recently reopened with new fittings and a refreshed look, which is great. Food is still as good as ever. My favourite dishes include the stewed peanuts, the chai poh long beans, stewed pork, black bean fish, and many more. Dishes here have a home-cooked feel about them and are very very tasty. For porridge lovers, you can find pumpkin and sweet potato porridge here. The place is packed during lunch hour and parking is a serious pain, so I tend to go for dinner on weekdays(they open till 11pm) or late lunch on weekends. The staff are attentive too, and they all wear pink tshirt uniforms that actually look quite fresh.

Porridge is one of the food I would go to when I’m feeling a bit under the weather. Recently, they did a facelift and the outlook of the new shop is much more inviting and cozy looking as compared to the old vintage looking Chinese restaurant look. The food remained the same with trays of dishes for you to choose from. Their roasted pork, salted egg and sweet potato porridge are my top choices but on some days their food can be quite a miss.

This is the first Teochew porridge place I went to and I will always keep coming back for more. Located at the row of shop beside the police apartment in SS2, the restaurant is rather cooling at night and is seldom crowded. You will never need to worry about parking because there is plenty and plus the quiet ambiance at night, this is a perfect affordable and convenient dinner place you can head to. Pricing for a porridge meal ranges from RM12 to RM20, depending on the type of dish you take and Teochew porridge in general are extremely yummy. They serve porridge(plain or with sweet potatoes) and side dishes like salted vegetables, stewed peanuts or pork, stewed pork and many more varieties of vegetable and meat. One thing I love about their dishes is that it’s healthier compared to a lot of places because the taste is less intense or oily but you still can have the Teochew porridge goodness you crave for. For those out there looking for a decent comfortable meal with a healthy variety of dishes, please do try them out!

«Let’s try the Teochew porridge in SS2!», said Hansen excitedly. I was like, «Are you out of your mind? Porridge for dinner?»…Anyway, as I am approaching D day to take my bridal photos, I shall comprehend. However, my slimming consultant said even porridge is carb so don’t eat that at night. Sigh, I guess broke my diet plan. :( Today’s porridge experience was different as it is my first time trying Teochew style. I certainly got confused between normal porridge and pumpkin porridge(assuming that it was boiled together with the porridge) but it turned out that they added a few slices of pumpkin and tada that’s pumpkin porridge for you. Tsk tsk. Besides the porridge, we also ordered dishes like salted fish, egg, baked beans, fried anchovies and so on to go with it. Overall, my experience was alright, I mean the taste isn’t really that outstanding but is not that bad either. Teochew porridge is apparently cooked with excessive water and is usually served as it is. and according to Hansen, the water is good for washing face as it makes your skin smooth. How interesting is that! Certainly this was a very healthy dinner and I would visit this place if I ever fall sick and need to recuperate. :) We spent RM40 for 3 persons which is pretty reasonable.

After the joyous celebration of Chinese New Year, my friends and I wanted to detox ourselves from all the rich food that we had indulged for the past two weeks. So we decided to have Teow Cheow porridge for dinner at SS2. The heavy rain made the atmosphere better to have porridge though the rain delayed some of us. Once all of us have arrived, we took turns choosing the dishes we want. For myself, I went last to choose the dishes, while choosing, the serving lady were not attending to me and allowed another customer to jump ahead of me. It got me a little frustrated, I told myself to keep calm and order what I wanted. As all the dishes had arrived, we started our detox feast on porridge. I felt the food were bland as the porridge. They lacked the tastes. The pickled vegetables were not salty. I was disappointed but I could be just me being picky again as a crowd was coming in.
