It’s my favourite bar in KL by far. The beers are great, staff are friendly and the live band on Friday nights with their cover of Radioactive — Imagine Dragons is top!

A Craft Beer Bar in MALAYSIA? No wai. Myself and a fellow traveler had spent most of the day walking through Petaling Market and needed a place to sit and enjoy a beer. A quick search on a few of the most-oft frequently visted beer resources on the internet revealed that Kuala Lumpur did indeed have a Craft Beer Bar, not too far from where I was currently standing(thanks for nothing, SIRI) Spiteful sentiments against Apple Software aside, we got to the bar around 4:45PM expecting it to be open, which it wasn’t — and waited for about ten minutes outside until the bartender ushered us in early, which was awfully nice of him. The bar itself is really cozy and slightly dark(mood lighting) and decorated with bottles of beer from around the world; despite Malaysia’s location being a tad bit estranged from the main beer(producing) nations of the world, it did enjoy a sizable collection of draft beer from Japan, Australia, the UK, and Denmark. I tried a few Australian IPAs I had never heard of before on draft and was surprisingly delighted by the impeccably clean draft lines they keep here — overall a great place to stretch your legs and slug back a few drinks after a long exhausting swampy day. The bar being what it is – catering mostly to tourists — is a little pricey in comparison to the rest of what you’ll find in Malaysia, but not entirely unreasonable; I didn’t fly all the way to Malaysia to try fish and chips so I decided to forego the food menu on my particular visit.

So many beer so little time. A little expensive, but worth a visit as a post/pre dinner thing.

Cervejas, muitas cervejas!

Craft beers lover, this is your place to go. Apart from the slightly expensive price range for beers here, I like this place a lot. But again, talking about craft beers, I have to say that they are just about the right prices. They have different craft beers on tap every now and then, and I was more than thrilled to find my new favorite — Hitachino WA, recommended by my colleague — here. Fret’ not if you don’t see your favorite beer on tap, they do have a very wide range of bottled craft beers too — you’re gonna love it! Apart from craft beers, you can be rest assured that they serve very decent food too. That’s also why I like coming here. Their beer bites come in a really wide variety, so be ready to be spoilt with all the choices given. Main dishes’ portions are decent too, with tastes that are above average. It’s not too crowded during weekdays, making it a very nice place to chill and relax after a long day with friend. While the crowd is bigger during weekends, the place is still pretty comfortable as they don’t cramp up their tables and seats in the bar. Another thing that I like about the place would be their music — they do play some acoustic covers sometimes and never something that’s not ‘my type of music’. Going back again? — Definitely.

Kuala Lumpur is a hot, steamy city — even at night — so when it comes to adult beverages, not much can compare to the relief an ice cold beer can offer. Correction: nothing compares to the relief an ice cold CRAFT beer can offer. When a meeting landed us at TAPS Beer Beer, I didn’t bother toning down my obvious delight. I got into craft beer ages ago, when the only couple of options in what was such a niche category were Sierra Nevada and Fat Tire. Not bragging; just establishing legitimacy! The beer selection at TAPS is pretty impressive and definitely interesting, and someday will probably even be excellent. For now, I’m loving the Japanese Hitachino presence(signage everywhere!) though I was mildly disappointed that they were out of Hitachino Nest White Ale the night we were there. But it all worked out because I was forced to try something new. The Barbãr Belgian Honey Ale rose to the occasion with its floral, citrus, and golden honey notes. And at 8% ABV, it packed a bit of a punch! We also tried the food which is not your typical pub fare: we loved the thick-cut pita chips with hummus and tzatziki as well as the chicken and beef satay. Next time I’m in KL, I know where’ll I head straight away for mellow atmosphere, good Belgian beer, and elevated bar snacks!

If your looking for a vast range of imported beers then head on over to Taps beer bar. This is the only joint in kl which provide an extensive menu of draft beers fresh out of the tap; be it australian or dutch, you can be sure to get it here. TAPS from what I gather is simply a family business which grew to big landing its name on international websites & blogs. This establishment provides a very casual & semi-completed look which is the outlook they are going for. You can be sure to check out their house specialties on the chalk board & ask for a few samplers. Pretty similar to the experience you get from visiting breweries. TAPS bar stands as one of the main distributors of selected imported beers to chic restaurants & cafes in the city. The pricing here is reasonable & there’s is ample of public parking outside so dont fret & head on down to TAPS!

BEERBEERBEER Taps beer bar is one of the more laid-back outlets in changkat. It’s located along the same row as LUST. When I first stepped in, I was greeted with various bottles of international beer lining the wall. They had everything from the Netherlands to India. Taps is infamous for providing a wide range of international beer from the tap. They constantly update their menu and you’ll never know what will be in stock for each visit. The best part of Taps is the live music. From Thursdays to Saturdays, they have live acoustic performances from 9.30pm til late. The vibe was amazing, and the music even better. Everyone was enjoying themselves as far as I could see. Taps also has an ALLDAYHAPPYHOUR from 12.00pm on Sundays. All the more reason to head over for a pint! I would definitely recommend a visit to Taps if you love beer as much as the Irish loves their potatoes.

Taps is the first and only bar in the city which dedicates itself solely to craft brews. The bar is low-key and minimal, giving way to the focal point here — craft beers. There are 14 different craft beers on tap. When one runs out, it’ll be replaced by another variety, keeping things fresh and exciting. The tasting portion is a good choice for those who can’t make up their minds(or first timers). After all, you will be spoilt for choices here; they have everything from Scotland’s BrewDog, Australia’s Mountain Goat to England’s Wychwood Brewery. Our favorite is definitely the Japanese Hitachino Nest pale ale. Taps is largely responsible for the craft brews movement. They even hold a craft brew festival every year now; do check their social pages for more updates.

I love their home brew ciders! Taste was AMAZING!!! They are the only bar I know so far that serves imported beer and other not so known alcohols from around the world. I often see foreigners in here as they have what they are looking for. They also have quite a number of house beer and wine and cider up for orders. Try them out! I was there on a Friday night and they have a live band going on. Well the music was not that great because it wasn’t really my type of music, and the band members looked rather senior. So yeah, you get what I mean. But overall the impression was good. My friend and I stayed till they close the place, because we just love how cosy the environment was. I will definitely come back to them for more :)

Just a little over two years ago, craft brews were hard to come by in Kuala Lumpur. That all changed when Taps, a dedicated craft brew institution introduced a slew of craft beers to bridge a gap in the market. My introduction to craft brews came about when I was living in Melbourne as there were a number of local breweries who brewed their own beer. I stumbled upon Taps on a night out in Changkat Bukit Bintang as the place was already quick to fill up with regulars who were looking for something different. The space at Taps was casual with exposed brick walls that proudly supported empty beer bottles on display. There are about 14 beers on tap on rotation and you’ll spot sharp pear ciders from Australian 2 Brothers Brewery, Scotland’s Brew Dog, Hitachino from Japan and England’s Wychwood Brewery. I find myself always going back to the Gypsy Cider, a semi-sweet cider with vanilla notes that provide a crisp clean finish. Craft beer options are listed on a large blackboard for your pleasure and if you would like to sample a little of everything or are new to the craft beer scene, there is a sample package where you get to pick three sample beers at a price. There’s also a list of classic bar snacks available including thin crust pizzas to munch on while you guzzle down your beer. Taps also offer very entertaining live acoustic music nights from Thursdays to Saturdays 9.30pm onwards at its Changkat branch which I daresay is a crowd pleaser. Happy hour begins from Monday to Saturday, 5pm to 9pm and Sundays from 12 noon onwards.

Taps was a long time coming but now that KL has had a taste of high quality craft beer there is no going back. Based on the popularity of this place I think everyone can see that craft beer has a place in this city of almost entirely commercially produced beer. In the past, I have compared KL to the Duff factory from The Simpsons because all of the same beer you see everywhere in KL are made in the same place just outside of town. Taps has proven to be a huge success by proving that even in a city with a religious dynamic and strong import taxes on alcohol craft beer. There are many draft beers that I have had at Taps that I would recommend, but recommendations are tough because they change their taps on a regular basis. This is one of my favorite qualities of this place and is a testament to their commitment to staying on top of what is new and delicious. Check out the broad that lists their current 10 – 12 beers on tap. You are guaranteed to find something you would like to try. They also have a great selection of bottles from around the world. Here, I can definitely recommend some good American craft beer to try. Magic Hat #9 is a beautifully balanced American Ale that has the most elegant hint of apricot. You almost don’t notice that it’s there until someone points it out. Very drinkable. Anything by Rouge brewery is also recommended.
