Shimogamo Shrine

One of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. In the beginning of January, Kemari or Japanese ancient sports similar to soccer (but foot-​ball lifting not to fall on the ground) is played by the persons in Heian era costumes, which was amusement among the courtiers at that time. I’ve not seen it yet and want to do it.
Others, various events are held throughout the year. Most famous is Aoi Festival; one of the biggest festivals in Kyoto. Every year the princesss called «Saiodai» is selected among eligible young ladies (there is a requisite: lives in Kyoto, comes from prestigious families, well-​mannered, intelligent, and beautiful. Very strict and severe conditions). It requires a large amount of money to prepare for its costume. I was surprised to see an acquaintance (ex-​classmate in my university period) played the leading part.
Preceding to the Aoi Festival I came here to see Yabusame, that is men wearing Heian era costume fire arrows at targets while riding on a horseback. It didn’t start on time so we had to wair for a little. It was very exciting and enthusiastic event, which never fails to attract foreign sightseers.

I like quiet peaceful place so I give this shrine a five star. You can enjoy the small shrine, not much is offered except the small souvenir shop and tea shop. You can see monks and their routine too. There are lots of old trees and river flows nearby. So dont be shy, give it a try.
