There are several good bars in Kyoto and this in theory should be added to the list, but sadly it’s a negative review from me. They are a craft beer bar trying to create a typical craft beer bar feel and setting, But they miss the mark and just don’t get it. A key part of a good pub is atmosphere. It does not need to be loud, it just needs to have a good«feeling» about it, which is usually created by the other patrons or staff. On our visit we wanted to sit in a area where all the tables were full except a table for three. Sadly because we were only two, our request was rejected. This is despite there being loads of empty tables elsewhere in the bar. The part they sat us in was awful and we eventually got up and moved to stand at the bar downstairs instead. On top of the bad table and lack of atmosphere, there was no English menu, staff hardy spoke a word of English(i appreciate they should not have to and it is Japan and I can’t speak Japanese either, but it did impact on my experience) and the pricing for beer was pretty expensive. Positives… They do lots of craft beer. Not one I would return to. Sad really as I was expecting good things.

There are lots of Japanese craft beers and some imported beers from European countries, England, Australia, Germany, and so on. Fritters and meat dishes are so great. HOWEVER, no American craft beer here ! OMG ! Craft Man, right ?? I would have these great dishes with hoppy US west coat IPA ! It seems the waitress yesterday didn’t know craft beers well, she needs a training more :(

Craftman has one of the biggest selections of craft beer in Kyoto at reasonable prices. Although Bungalow(another popular craft beer bar in kyoto) is great for a sit-down meal, my choice is Craftman when it comes to exploring Japan’s craft beers. They offer taster sets, and a nice bar counter at the entrance, as well as seating in the back and upstairs(for a small charge i believe.)
