I couldn’t resist visiting Seiyu when I found out that there were Walmart stores(or rather, Walmart holdings) in Japan — we do own some company stock, so I’ll write it off. And since Seiyu was only about 20 minutes from our hotel(via subway), we thought we’d make a morning of it. The store itself was super easy to find. From Iidabachi station, take the(N) Namboku line to Akabone-Iwabuchi. It’s about 22 minutes and ¥240. Then a short(relatively) walk to Seiyu. I thought it would be like the standard version of a Walmart at home, but it ended up being more of a grocery store with the recognizable Walmart touches here and there. My 3yr old twins were fascinated by the substantially smaller shopping carts(we SUPERSIZE everything in the U.S.). There was a wide variety of food stuff to bring back as gifts to Hawaii for friends and family and the price was right. We bought everything from diapers(we still have one child holding out on potty training), to chocolates, to toys, to sake. There was plenty more we would have gotten if we didn’t have to lug everything back with us on the train. The store was clean and not a Walmart weirdo in sight. Small, but I expected that. The prices were GREAT(I was hoping to see that). The staff were polite and helpful. Oh, if you don’t have your own bags there’s a fee of ¥1 each to purchase plastic bags. I don’t know why they don’t do this at home. They’ve been doing this in other countries for YEARS.(Sorry for the mini rant). I wish I would have found something closer to the USA version, but I’m still happy with what we did find.
