Over the past 4 years, we’ve been fortunate to visit Japan for a yearly trip. This time around I was brought to Maisen GranSta for dinner with some friends. I was a firm believer that I had found the best tonkatsu restaurant when I was introduced to Katsukura. Little did I know that Maisen would top my experience there. There is something to be said when you can choose from more than 5 different variities of pork on the menu. I did forget what breed of pork I had this night but let me say, it was definitely the Kobe beef of pork. The perfect marbeling of fat and super super tender pork was fried to a golden perfection. I can’t stop thinking about the tonkatsu from that night even as I type this review a week later. The set I had ordered also included their special pork miso soup which was super flavorful and tasty. Needless to say I was stuffed after eating 10 ozs of what I would consider the best tonkatsu I’ve ever eaten. Have heard that the original Maisen location offers a wider range of food choices but why would you order anything other than tonkatsu?

We visited Maisen after a lonnng day at DisneySea so we were starving. I got the 3000 yen black pork set and my husband got a standard set. The black pork was soft and tender and it came with a special apple based dipping sauce. Honestly, it was good but not amazing. Good to try one time but that’s about it. We much prefer Katsukura over Maisen given its better pricing and quality. There is an english menu and they accept credit cards.
