This felt like a hidden gem, tucked down a smaller alley across a small bridge. Walking in, you felt as if you were walking into someone’s home as it was full of tchotkes and felt lived in. They had a wonderful live musician who added to the ambiance. It wasn’t very busy, compared to other restaurants we had wandered by, and we enjoyed our meal here.
I won’t say this is the best food I ever had, but it was good. Great house wine. Decently priced. Service was good if a little standoffish, though she seemed to speak a little English.
All in all, this made for a memorable evening.

Cucina da Mario ist seit vielen Jahren unser erster Anlaufpunkt in Venedig. Die Inhaberin Annalisa Masiero und ihre Mutter Mama Melia sind echt «international». Sie verständigen sich mit jedem Gast auch ohne Fremdsprachenkenntnisse. Das Lokal wird überwiegend von Angestellten und Arbeitern aus der Umgebung besucht. Die Küche ist echt venezianisch — einfach und gut. Man sollte ein bisschen Zeit haben und sich im Lokal umschauen. An den Wänden hängen Bilder, die entweder von Melia selbst gemalt wurden oder ihr von Gästen geschenkt wurden. Auch an den Deckenbalken hängen jede Menge Souveniers und Mitbringsel ihrer Gäste. Zu jedem Stück kann Melia eine Geschichte erzählen.
Ein wirklich sehenswerter Platz, etwas abseits vom Touristenrummel, gemütlich und echt venezianisch.

Amazing. Keep an eye open to the right whilse walking from San Marco Giglio towards Campo Morosini, and you may spot this very local and unpretentious restaurant on the west bank of one of the canals. The woman who served us spoke not a word of English, and we pretty much just took what they recommended. We needn’t have worried, because it was amazing (and there was lots of it). Pasta courses, salad, meat, and lots of bread and house wine.
The room was a clutter of tins, boxes, and memorabilia. It’s a really tasty, local, authentic place to eat. Worth looking for.
