I know pastries are supposed to be eaten in the morning with your cappuccino but I’m American, a glutton, and was starving for a little snack in the evening. One thing I could not get enough of and did not get to try much of in Italy was sfogliatelle, the«lobster tail» shaped pastry filled with cheese. It’s got a million layers to it and requires a certain technique to it’s baking. The result is a crunchy and sweet treat. I get the same satisfaction from eating sfogliatelle as i do when I eat a croissant. It’s just not bread. On my walk home, i needed something to spike my blood sugar to help me make it across the river to the other side. Sfogliatelle! That was the answer. I saw Rostemal and went inside to see what they had. There lay some leftover sfogliatelle. «Due, per favore,» I told the man. He told me they were chocolate filled. Even better. «What’s sfogliatelle?» my mother asked. «Trust me,» I told her. We dipped into the paper bag and munched on the powdered sfogliatelles. Perfection. Somehow, the walk home seemed to go a lot faster even if we did detour every now and then. Lost? Forget google maps. Sfogliatelle will help you find your way.
