«You stoopid American, get some culture and eat REAL Italian food! Get away from your hamburgers and fries!» That’s the first thought I had when I contemplated going to McDonald’s. Remember now, I was out of the US for about 3 weeks when I realized I missed food from home. There’s a certain familiarity to going to McDonald’s. Be it the hamburgers or fries, it’s food I know. So I pushed that thought out of my head and went to McDonald’s. Dining at McDonald’s is the same but different in Roma. For one thing, there’s a doorman. He was well dressed in a suit and tie and had an earpiece. He looked like he was working the door at Gucci! Yes, he did work there because he did clear off some tables and returned to watching the door. It most likely was to help deter vagrants that may wander into McDonald’s. Another thing is that it doesn’t feel really like a take out meal. This was a meal to enjoy, not scarf down hastily. It all seemed pretty fancy for a simple meal of burger and fries. McDonald’s offers the typical Big Macs and some specialties. Because this was Italia, they had some really fancy coffees because they have the full on coffee machines for espressos etc! Since it was late in the day, I didn’t try coffee. I opted not to get a burger or a lobster panini, but chicken wings! Yeah, I know there goes my I wanted a good ol’ American burger, but the wings were pretty good. I also opted for fries, which didn’t taste any different from other McDonald’s I’ve been to, and a Coke. Yeah, I went a little edgy on the chicken wings, but I had to try McDonald’s chicken wings. Maybe I should have tried the lobster panini, but being a little bit prone to breaking out with shell food made me think twice. Price wise, you may be spending a little bit more than the regular Italian restaurant next door. But when you’re missing home and wanting some crazy American fast-food, this will do. At least I didn’t make every meal a McDonald’s meal!
