Basilica di SAN Nicola IN Carcere

It is a small church. If you are passing by, go in and take a look. But I wouldn’t travel all the way to see this church. There are many other fascinating church in Rome.
The church is close to Circo Massimo, another tourist attraction spot.

Located in the heart of the «ancient Rome» this small church is worth a stop if you are in the area. It’s just steps from the Forum or Capitol Hill and right next to Teatro Marcello.
It’s a typical small Roman basilica with mostly Baroque decoration. If you are an ancient Roman history buff, this is your church! It’s constructed from the ruins and temples of the Foro Holitorium — you can see columns built right into the walls. At one point, the old ruins served as a Byzantine prison, before the original church was built in the 6^th century.
In high season, the crypt is open for a small fee — you’ll be shown the footings of the original temple to Juno that stood here. Definitely worth a stop for those interested in history and the ancient ruins here.
