Came for the legendary views of the Tuscan hills around Florence and was treated to an amazing stormy view of the whole valley after a great Aperol spritz and crostini w/anchovies, capers, and black olives. Friendly staff and lovely location designed by none other than Michelangelo himself — how can you go wrong?

Crossing the Arno and walking up the hill to this place was a perfect break from the crowds. I did not climb the Duomo or the Giotto bell tower so I can’t compare, but the view from here was marvelous and I enjoyed the residential setting. The HUMAN — ANTONYGORMLEY exhibit was taking place and I recommend it if you are looking for a slower-pace time away from the hustle and bustle. In addition to the view, the sculptures were thought provoking and whimsical. I just read that Kim and Kanye were married here last year, so apparently I’m not the alone in appreciating the view and 16th century ambiance. [A caution: the ground is very uneven and the entry is steep and without stairs. I recommend you wear stiff-soled shoes.]

The most peculiar part of the Forte Belvedere visit is the fact that it seems that is not located in a city like Florence, but in the countryside surrounded by hills and olive trees. The panorama is absolutely stunning, and it’s worth a trip if the day is nice AND if you have seen more important views and museums already.
