Dante

Dante’s was a nice Americanized restaurant in Florence. You could tell it tended towards the study abroad student population much heavier than the local population. They give you endless house wine if you’re a study abroad student as long as you order an entrée. We had 8 in my group and each order our own entrée and and 2 appetizers for the table and finished 10 bottles of wine. The bill came out to around € 95. It’s definitely worth it if your trying to have nice wine and a big group. Food was good but nothing exquisite. But the overall deal… absolutely cannot be beaten. Good food, good wine, good times.

Despite their signage saying very clearly «Pizzeria» and all menus including an extensive pizza list this place does not serve pizza at lunch time. Nowhere on the menu or signage does it say that pizza is only available at dinner, so if you want pizza at lunch, don’t come here!

I’m sorry, but this place is BS. They advertise cheap prices for pasta and the atmosphere seemed cool, so we decided to try it. Rude waitress and tiny portions for the price (7 small ravioli for € 10). There are plenty of other places in the area that are worth your money…

The food was pretty alright, not the best though! However, if you’re a student you get free wine throughout the meal! Definitely a fun dinner place for study abroad students! Cheap and the ambiance is nice!

Studied abroad and frequented this place quite a few times over a 2 and ½ week period. The staff loved us and gave us free liters of wine and bread drizzled with olive oil. Never a bad meal and the service was great. We felt not as strangers but as family.

Slow indifferent service. Good pizza. Pasta was good. Chocolate lava cake was overcooked. Never brought our coffee, but charged us anyway. Never apologized for forgetting coffee or even offering to get it for us! We won’t be back. Ever. Plenty of better places to eat.

This place is surprisingly super crowded considering the number of bad reviews. I’d say it’s a very Americanized italian restaurant. They even have fettuccine Alfredo! The prices are definitely worth it for the food and apparently if you show your student ID and prove that you’re studying abroad, they give you unlimited wine! Service was slow but food was good and I think this place deserves a better rating than what it currently has now

Great décor and comfortable environment, but our server was not particularly friendly, my food was only OK, and 10 euro for pretty much 7 or 8 small ravioli was unacceptable. I’m ok with small and moderate portions, but this pushed it. The others in our party had reasonable portion sizes. 2.50 was also a bit steep for service charge, but that isn’t reflected in my two star review.

I have to agree that service here is not great at all. Waitress devoid of emotion even when trying to elicit a smile from here by complimenting a dish. The pizza crust was chewy with a crispy outer crust. Pizza sauce very rich and tasty and just the right amount of mozzarella. It was good pizza but the service is a total downer.
The saving grace of the meal was the mind blowing aglio olio spaghetti though I doubt that it is the function of a good cook and speaks more about the ingredients which are widely found around Firenze.

It pains me to have to write a negative review about Dante’s, but it needs to be done.
My 5 roommates and I have been studying abroad in Florence for a few months and we dined at Dante’s multiple times and had great experience however last night was a complete disappointment. The food is not the problem it is the deceitful and careless wait staff. The owner, a bald man in his thirties, comes across as very generous and welcoming; he even hands out free shots and desserts each time we eat there. The moment he steps out of the restaurant however, even to have a cigarette, the rest of the wait staff ignores us and disrespects us, talking only in Italian and acting like are not there.
When it was time to pay, we asked that the check be split among 6 different credit cards equally, something we have done multiple times before at Dante’s. The waitress was extremely condescending and rude insisting that our request was impossible. She insisted that we had to pay the whole check on one card or in cash and receive no change — ludicrous! After a 15 minute stand off in which we told them that we would wait for the manager to return or leave without paying, we were allowed to split the check among the 6 of us.
As we were leaving they were extremely rude and muttering things under their breath. We were one of the last groups in the restaurant and we felt very uncomfortable as we left. They were trying to take advantage of us, clearly targeting us because we are American students.
I understand that American students have somewhat of a negative reputation in this city due to the fact that we nearly dominate the tourist population, however, this restaurant specifically caters TO american students with their free house wine. no charge sitting fee and cheap prices. If Dante’s wants to remain one of the top student/​tourist destinations in Florence, they need to start respecting their customers and drop the attitude.
Also, their pizza is not even that good.

My friends and I went on a slow night and found the staff to be incredibly unfriendly and the food to be less than average. Solely based on the rude staff and mediocre food I would not suggest Dante’s at all.

I used to come to Dante all the time when I was a student in Firenze (4 years ago) and we loved it then, but it has gone seriously downhill since. To the point that I wonder if they have new management AND a new chef. I came here for lunch on a trip back to Firenze, and I was so disappointed. The server was extremely bitchy, my pizza (Quattro formaggi) was soggy and had subpar flavor, and the most egregious insult is that the server refused to give me Parmesan when I asked for it! She told me it isn’t for pizza and that I would have to pay extra. Now, I should point out that 1) I speak fluent Italian, used the polite formal tense, and am not a «loud American tourist», 2) I have lived in both Florence and Sicily and have traveled extensively throughout Italy, and I have never been told I had to pay for Parmesan cheese. And they do charge. 2 euro table charge («copperto») that should cover the oil, salt, AND PARMESAN on the table. It’s also notable that this was the most disappointing quattro formaggi pizza I’ve ever had in Italy (I’ve even had better in NYC). I used to anyone and everyone I know who was headed to Firenze to come to Dante, but I will never recommend this place again. What a saddening disappointment.

Had a great experience with my family. The staff was friendly and the food was way better than we expected. I had the lasagna, delicious! It tasted homemade, very good!

Dante was the first restaurant I ate at in Florence as a study abroad student. First of all, the focaccia is HEAVENLY. I could easily make a whole meal out of it. The pasta is really good and decently-​priced. I’ve never had the pizza, but I heard it’s delicious as well. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is great. It’s in a cool neighborhood, a little out of the way, but definitely worth it. Free refills on wine for students, which was also a big plus for me. A good mix of locals and visiting students, will be back!

Before I came to Italy to study abroad, i heard raving reviews about many restaurants around the city and one of the most advised places was Trattoria Dante. Located just south of the Arno (river) it provides a great environment for friends to go for great food, wine and conversation. We have eaten at Dante’s many times this semester and one of which is the great environment they provide. The manager is an incredibly nice gentleman who now knows us and makes sure to seat us as soon as he is able (usually 15 – 25 minutes on a very busy night).
So far everything on their menu has been good but I would advise their pizza above all else. Their pizzas, which range from traditional to creative, all maintain the traditional Italian style and are a perfect fit for anyone hungry for good Italian pizza. While the price is going to be roughly 10 euro per person, they offer a great deal in regards of wine for students. They offer their house wine, free and unlimited for all students who buy an entrée. Thus far I have only had great experiences at Trattoria Dante and would advise it for anyone who visits Firenze, especially students with a love for wine!

Went to Dante’s after hearing good reviews about it. Came with a group of 4 others on a Saturday night without a reservation and were told immediately that if we wanted to eat there we had to be finished in an hour and fifteen minutes. They really rushed us, and our food was very mediocre. I ordered a pasta dish with a tomato cream meat sauce for 10 euro that was half warm and half cold and tasted like box pasta (not fresh) that I could have gotten in the US. Two other people with me ordered risotto which they said was very bland and looked nothing like risotto I had ever seen before — this risotto looked like Indian rice. Someone else in my group ordered the gnocchi which they said was just okay. Was told later that night that Dante’s was famous for pizza… perhaps that would have been better but regardless, I wouldn’t recommend this place.
