Rubbish Airport — Lufthansa wouldn’t take the luggage for a 2.30pm flight until 2pm! Apparently all because of uncertainty whether the incoming flight could land or not. All others seemed to be able to, so wondering whether they handed over the incoming plane to one of the passengers…
At the security check they would also introduce artificial delays, who knows why.
I understand now why this is called «Luton Airport of Italy»…

Really there isn’t much to brag about at this airport. It is small, with some limited shopping available prior to heading to the «terminal» area.
I guess a few pros:
* There was plenty of seating available.
* Security seemed to be prompt
* Staff I interacted with were friendly
I few potential cons:
* Not a lot of options should you be stuck waiting
* Looks & feels old & dirty
* Limited signage, especially outside the airport

The only good thing is the cheap (€ 6-​CASH) bus that takes you to the train station (super close to the old city center) without any stops. The rest pretty much sucks about this airport, if you can fly into or out of Bologna, much much better! Out of 4 times I flew into Florence’s airport they lost my luggage 3 times from 3 different airlines! One time it took them 3 days to find and deliver my bag. Off course I didn’t care much because I was just happy to be at my beloved Firenze but if this happened at a less loved city I’d be pretty angry!

The airport is old and tiny. We checked in online for our flights on Air France to CDG in Paris and just needed to check in our bags. Luckily we got there 2 hours early, however, the guy working the counter at Air France told us we had to wait til they open an hour later. Really? I’ve never seen this at any other airport. If you’re working the counter, then you’re working! Why are you deciding to not let customers check in their bags? Luckily, he did open up a little earlier than an hour.
There’s «free wifi» if you put in your email address and such, but obviously it’s slow. When it was time to board our shuttle to the plane, we literally were on the shuttle for 10 seconds and then right at our plane. Is that really necessary? I know I gave CDG a 2, but it is still ahead of this airport.

Let’s be honest: if your bagage drop is also your customer service, trouble is ahead. We arrived two hours before boarding and were in queu for 90 minutes. We checked in online and had already or luggage tags. But no, no dedicated drop of. No fast lane. Not a single sign of a well organised airport operation. A pitty for KLM who delivers in general very good service. But this. Never again. This airport is a disgrace for aviation.

No Free WIFI, no decent waiting areas. They renovated it and it looks a bit better, but service-​wise is comparable to a third world airport (and take this from someone who traveled in these countries).

Mix between Canberra airport before it jazzed up (i.e. there appears to be only one runway and you exit using stairs and taking a bus to the terminal) and Berlin what with the baggage claim area being right by the gates. Two guys were checking for declared goods the day I arrived and so there was quite some delay before could exit.
I really was surprised by how small the airport is, but also how close it is located to the city centre. Signs aren’t marked that clearly so took us a while to find the taxi rank. Not a lot of amenities although the newsagent shop did sell postage stamps (yay!) and there was a post office box (woot, better than Venice!)
Only one coffee shop but their cakes and coffee were decent (chocolate cake was better than the fruit cheesecake).

To all those that tend to critic this service, I think it’s very handy to fly out from Florence and nowadays there are many companies that have discounts and nice fares.
The personnel is nice and being such a small station it’s also usual not find huge lines like in other airports.
It’s true the structure is still work in progress, but I believe it will become more and more efficient, also knowing the tramway will reach it in a few years and it’ll be easier to come and go from the city center.

This airport is simply put, a gong show. Poorly organized and lacking in technology. Long line-​ups to check in, airlines unable to accept payment for baggage fees (so you have to go to another long line-​up to pay them!), crowded waiting areas, limited amenities and no lounge once you go through security (and the airport lounge is also very small). I’ve heard better things about Pisa Airport, so I will probably try flying in or out of Pisa to compare.

Truly the worst airport I’ve ever had to go through. I have been to hundreds of airports all around the world and Florence is the absolute worst. The first horrible thing about it — the ladies who work there. If you are American they refuse to help you. I asked multiple times & multiple people for help, that work there, at the information desk. All they did was give me phone numbers, one was a sex hotline. No joke. Then once I got ahold of delta, they told me to hand the phone to an airport worker to clear up the issue. I tried, they said «we cannot help you» and let the person behind me cut in front of me! I finally figured out my misunderstanding, tried to go through the line again & was mistreated so badly. I REFUSE to ever fly in or out of this god awful airport ever again. Do yourself a favor and just fly into/​out of Rome & drive.

Que sí, que será pequeño pero funcional y resultón. Sorprendente me resulta ese túnel metálico por el que hay que pasar una vez comprobado que no llevas líquidos para volar aviones y tal.
Hay dos terminales, una molona y otra no tanto donde apenas hay tiendas ni nada en lo que puedas entrenerte comprando (o mirando). Todos los vuelos baratejos parten de ahí y todos los viajeros estamos junticos esperando a que nos llamen para hacer fila.
Ni fú ni fa, meh. Como un utilitario, eso sí, limpito y aseado, que es de agradecer.

A fine airport. It is easy to get from spot to spot as it is a relatively small airport. Check in and security neither took a long time and there is duty free shopping should you be interested. There is one main dining area with a few different fast food type restaurants. Not a ton of places to sit, but it was either a great or awful experience.

If there is anything better than an airport in Florence, it’s an airport anywhere else.

Cuando llegas al aeropuerto de Florencia en lo único que piensas es «qué pequeñico es, madre mía». Acostumbrado a volar desde el aeropuerto de Barajas, esto me parecía poco más que una enanez. Pero oye, cumple su comentido, qué os voy a decir. Es verdad que no tiene tiendas prácticamente, y que las que hay son un poco meh. Pero a cambio, no tienes que pasar tanto tiempo dentro, porque es muy fácil y rápido llegar a tu puerta de embarque. Stansted por ejemplo es también un aeropuerto relativamente pequeño, y las puertas de embarque están colocadas a tomar por el orto de la terminal en sí, lo que hace que potencialmente sea fácil que pierdas el vuelo. Personalmente, prefiero Florencia.
También es verdad que el número de vuelos es limitado, así que imagino que los locales tendrán que hacer escalas bastante a menudo. ¡Pero es que tampoco se puede tener vuelos directos a todas las partes del mundo desde todos los aeropuertos del mundo! Entonces estaríamos viviendo una utopía.
Sin embargo, la cafetería sirve un café BIEN DECENTE (es Italia, al fin y al cabo) difícil de encontrar en otros aeropuertos del mundo. Ahí queda eso…

Location: About 15 minutes from the centre of Florence. This will depend on the day and time that you leave.
Price: The flat fee for a taxi is about 22 €. This is what I paid when leaving from Via San Zanobi, which is a 7-​minute walk to SMN. 1 € per piece of luggage.
The airport: Not my favourite. The advantage is that it’s much smaller than Rome or Pisa’s airports, and only caters to domestic flights — so there’s less foot traffic and it’s less chaotic. However — it’s a bit messy in terms of providing clear instructions. For example, I entered the airport via the big Departures sign that I saw on the left. I get inside only to have to walk all the way back to the right because THAT’s where the departures area is. Then, after checking in, I went to find my gate downstairs. There is a big sign for gates 1 – 8 with an equally big arrow pointing right. Where was gate 8? To my far left. What the hell? So then I notice that no ‘gates’ actually lead to a plane. After asking an airport employee and not actually getting anywhere, I figured out that you have to take a shuttle to your plane but ONLY once this has been ‘authorized.’ They only let you get on the shuttle when you can board the plane. So I finally get to the plane and get on, only to realize that my plane has two doors and the airline is letting people in from both entrances. What happens? Bottleneck in the aisle. Super effective process.
Verdict: OK but not great. They really need to get their crap together and direct people properly, and let passengers know what the process is.

I don’t love or hate the Florence airport. It’s small and could use some modern updates such as free WIFI and better dining options, but it gets the job done. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
Easy to navigate.
Close to the historic city center.
Clean.
Affordable shuttle service to train station.
Negatives:
No free WIFI.
Limited dining options.
No direct flights from the U.S.

Many people are giving this airport a bad review because it’s small, which I don’t understand. Donta breaka ma balls! I know it sucks being bored waiting for your flight if you get here early, but an airport’s job is to get people in/​out of here. Entertaining you and meeting all of your shopping needs is a plus, not a must. Yes it’s not super modern nor fancy, but if it does the job it’s intended to do (and this airport does it well), then it’s a good airport!
I’ve flown in and out of here many times. It’s always been smooth, fast security, and neither my friends/​family nor I have had any problems. Maybe I like this airport because it allows me to get there 20 minutes before my flight leaves and get on the plane without a problem. Arriving early to an airport is a concept I haven’t quite grasped and Peretola is perfect for people with no extra time like me!
What blows my mind is that Florence has millions of tourists coming in and this airport hasn’t changed in years or grown to accomodate more lines and flights. But I’m just being a capitalist. The airport is clean and there’s good looking Italian security guards that freshly arrived visitors can fall in love with.
The Airport-​City shuttle runs every hour, on time (the actual hours are posted on the bus stop), and takes you to Santa Maria Novella. It costs € 7 one way and € 12 round trip (if you buy it at the same time) and the ride lasts about 20 – 30 mins one way.
Taxis are a flat € 20 to Santa Maria Novella, extra € for luggage, late night rides, extra people, taking too many selfies, etc.

The airport is quite small and I would call it an average airport. The security is quite fast, luggage did take a bit of time coming out. Wouldn’t like a long stay over at this airport.
If you are coming to Florence then as soon as you get out there is an Tourist Information booth inside the airport (right past baggage claim), get a tourist map sheet off the person as you can understand it on the way to hotel or city centre. Don’t waste money on taxi just hop on the bus it’s cheap and drops you at the main city center/​Santa Maria Novella Train Station, the bus is called Vola-​in-​bus (it’s right outside the airport on the right) as the person in the information booth and they can direct you in the right direction.

Florence really needs a new airport but thanks to the red tape Italy is notorious for, it will never happen. Lots of people come through Florence’s airport and it is absolutely miniscule. And yet somehow it isn’t the absolute worst airport in the world. Somehow it isn’t absolutely atrocious.
Your only other option to come into Florence is by landing in the slightly-​better Pisa airport and taking a 45 minute bus to Florence. I’ll deal with the tiny Florence airport, though.

Hm… Klein? Ja! Na und? Zentral? Unbedingt! 10 – 15 Minuten bis in die historische Altstadt! Platz im inneren? Jawoll! Meiner Meinung verträgt Florenz eh nicht noch mehr Touristen. Also weshalb die Landebahn verlängern, um Potential für noch mehr zu schaffen? Ich mag die kurzen Wege und die minimale Wartezeit bis man über sein Gepäck verfügen kann. Bus und Taxi sind nicht zu übersehen und man wird auch nicht gleich von einer Horde Limousinenfahrer überfallen. Über mangelnde Sauberkeit kann ich auch nicht klagen. Also Daumen hoch…

Bei meiner letzten Toskanareise durfte ich den Flughafen in Florenz kennenlernen. Meine Frau musste noch für einige Tage zur Arbeit zurück nach Deutschland.
Der Flughafen Peretola ist auch unter dem Namen Amerigo Vespucci Airport bekannt, nach dem berühmten italienischen Seefahrer.
Da er sehr klein ist, wird auch der größere Flughafen in Pisa gerne als Ergänzung genutzt. Die momentane doch sehr kleine Start– und Landebahn kann maximal von Flugzeugen bis zur Größe der Typen Boeing 737 – 700 und Airbus A319 angeflogen werden.
Der nordwestlich von der Innenstadt gelegene Flughafen ist mit dem Linienbus vom Bahnhof Santa Maria Novella verbunden.
Der Flughafen liegt zwischen der Autobahnausfahrt Florenz-​Nord und dem Industriegelände in der Nähe von Prato. Der Flughafen ist vom Stadtzentrum über die Viale Guidoni und die Autobahnen A 1 und A 11 (Ausfahrt «Firenze Nord/​Firenze Mare») erreichbar. Da ich aus dem Süden kam, musste ich mich durch den Stadtverkehr drängen. Daher ausreichend Zeit und Nerven mitbringen.
Der Platz und das Essen– und Einkaufsangebot im Flughafen ist überschaubar.
Wenn man es sich aussuchen kann, sollte man für die Anreise auf den Flughafen in Pisa ausweichen.

Average airport. The lounge is before security which is awful, there is no where to sit down while waiting for your flight and very limited food options.
Plenty of shopping and security is fast.
Do not get here too early or you will be bored waiting.

Small local airport. Improving

The 2 stars is for the actual condition it is in now… after the face lift… not sure when it was done… but we last flew in 5 years ago… was WORSE… if anyone can imagine it. hahahaaaaa…
I always compare AdF to the Shreveport, Louisiana airport I landed in 24 years ago… WAIT! Let me clarify… the Shreveport airport 24 years ago was BETTER!
I agree with Alessandro «Cabeza» T. every single bit. A great historical city like Florence deserves a better airport… yes, Pisa is right there… but…not the same.
Why in the world they need buses to transport passengers from the terminal to the plane… beats me… it’s a stone’s throw away… waste of energy…
Staff has ALWAYS been rude… I’ve not ever had a good experience… being Chinese American does NOT help… there is a big illegal population of Chinese migrant workers… so some of us do get the brunt of the bad service for the wrong reasons… at least this time around when I asked for the mail bin for posting postcards, the lady from the currency exchange counter helped me… with a smile. Sometimes, even though I speak Italian… I make is a point to speak English to show that I am a visitor… it helps… puts that barrier right out there! ;-)
At least now the bathrooms are clean! The self service check-​in «counters» are in working order! Wunderbar! It was easy peasy… we try hard to travel light… no check in luggage always helps.
Florence deserves better… but I suppose with what the Italian economy is like at the moment… this is good enough…
