Caffrey’s produce the chocolate that 1980s school kids spent their money on. Never mind your high-priced Cadbury’s offerings, this weird mockolate was where it was at — each bar was only 10p. Most popular was the Macaroon, which is what I thought the Famous Five were eating at their cream teas(I have since discovered that their kind of macaroon is a sort of bun). Narrow and long, it was chocolate with coconut in a waxy wrapper, just like its counterpart the Time bar. The cynical might say that Caffrey’s were trying to cash in on the Dime bar, but really Time was so much more. Rock hard toffee encased in a thin layer of chocolate, it might break your teeth but it would last you all day. Still available in shops, they are making something of a recessionary comeback and may yet rise again to take over our youth’s hearts and minds.
